Read the novel first if you want the fullest account of Connie Chatterley’s inner life, Lawrence’s ideas about class and industrial society, and the relationship’s gradual development. Watch an adaptation when you want a visual, time-limited interpretation shaped by a particular director, cast and era. No single film can stand in for the book, and the surviving catalog records do not provide enough scene-by-scene evidence to declare one version definitively the most faithful.
Four screen versions are especially useful for comparison: Just Jaeckin’s 1981 France/UK production, Ken Russell’s 1993 adaptation, Jed Mercurio’s 2015 version, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s 2022 feature. Their documented runtimes, casts and formats differ, while access to the newer titles depends on territory and date.
What the book gives you that a film cannot
D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the source text for the films. The novel gives direct access to Constance Chatterley’s thoughts, her sense of physical and emotional deprivation, and her changing understanding of marriage, work, sexuality and social rank. It can pause over a feeling, repeat an image, or explain a character’s motives in ways a two-hour production cannot easily reproduce.

A film must convert much of that material into performance, composition, sound, costume and editing. When a scene is shortened or omitted, the adaptation is making an argument about what the story needs in its new medium, not simply photocopying the novel.

That difference makes the book the best reference point for a comparison. Read the relevant chapters before judging whether a film has compressed a subplot, moved emphasis from thought to action, or changed the balance between romance and social criticism. A film can be successful on its own terms while still leaving out material that matters to a reader of Lawrence.

The table separates facts that are actually stated by the catalog records from details that are not. In particular, the absence of a runtime or cast in an institutional entry is not evidence that a production had none; it means that the cited entry does not establish the figure.

The British Council UK Films Database identifies the 2022 film as an adaptation of Lawrence’s novel, directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre and written by David Magee. It lists Emma Corrin as Lady Chatterley, Jack O’Connell and Matthew Duckett among the principal cast, and records a world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in 2022. The database page was last updated 12 May 2025.

Its synopsis centers on Constance’s affair with a gamekeeper after her marriage becomes emotionally and physically isolating. That framing tells you how the production presents its central conflict; it is not a substitute for checking the novel’s broader political and psychological dimensions.
Why the runtime appears in three forms
Do not treat 112 minutes as the only authoritative length. The British Council database gives 112 minutes for its 2022 feature listing. The British Board of Film Classification records a cinema version at 125 minutes 55 seconds, classified on 17 October 2022, and a home-entertainment listing at 125 minutes, classified on 4 October 2024. The records may describe different cuts or catalog conventions. If you are planning a screening or comparing pacing, identify which listing your copy follows.
Content information
The BBFC advises that the film contains frequent strong sex scenes, strong nudity and strong language. This is practical viewing guidance, not a verdict on the film’s literary quality. The sexual material is central to the adaptation’s presentation of Connie and Oliver’s relationship, so viewers who want to avoid explicit content should check the classification notice before watching.

How to approach it as an adaptation
The 2022 film is the most recent version in this group and has the clearest current production documentation. Watch for the way performance carries feelings that Lawrence states in prose: hesitation, shame, anger, tenderness and the desire for a life outside a rigid marriage. Then return to the novel to see which social arguments, secondary figures or reflective passages have been compressed. The available catalog information does not establish a complete fidelity ranking against the other films.
2015: Jed Mercurio’s version
What the catalogs establish
The University of Nottingham’s D. H. Lawrence collection identifies Jed Mercurio as director of the 2015 adaptation. Netflix’s catalog lists Holliday Grainger, Richard Madden and James Norton as stars. Its synopsis says that Constance Chatterley begins a passionate affair after her wealthy husband is paralyzed in the First World War.
Those details establish the adaptation’s basic setup and principal performers. They do not, by themselves, prove how much of Lawrence’s narration, political debate or supporting cast appears in the finished film. For that reason, describe the 2015 production by its documented credits rather than assigning it an unsupported fidelity score.
Availability is territory-specific
Netflix’s own page warns that the title is not currently available in the viewer’s country. Availability can change by territory and date, so a reader should search the service in their location rather than assume that a catalog page guarantees access. The warning also means that a recommendation to watch the 2015 version should be understood as a version to seek out, not a promise that it is streaming everywhere.
What makes it useful in a comparison
Placed between the 1993 and 2022 productions, the 2015 film lets you examine how a modern television-era adaptation handles the marriage, the war injury and the affair. For a responsible viewing comparison, record the edition and opening credits of the copy you find, then compare its sequence of events with the novel. Pay particular attention to which narrative voice survives, how the relationship is introduced, and whether the film emphasizes erotic, romantic, social or psychological dimensions. Your notes can be specific about what appears on screen without claiming that the institutional record proves a general judgment about fidelity.

Class and industrial society
Connie’s marriage, Oliver Mellors’s work and the surrounding estate connect private desire to class power and industrial change. In prose, Lawrence can move from a physical detail to a general argument in a paragraph. On screen, the same idea may be carried by locations, clothing, labor, dialogue or contrast between interiors and the landscape. Check whether a film preserves that social context or lets the romance dominate it.
Sex, privacy and censorship
The novel’s frank treatment of sexuality was historically controversial. Films face additional decisions about what can be shown, how intimacy is choreographed and how classification rules affect the final cut. Compare not only the presence of sex scenes but their narrative function: do they mark trust, rebellion, tenderness, conflict or a change in Connie’s sense of self? “Better” depends on the job you want the work to perform. The novel is the stronger choice for sustained access to Lawrence’s language, social criticism and Connie’s consciousness. A film is the stronger choice for seeing how actors embody the characters, how locations establish atmosphere and how a director imposes a visual rhythm on the story. Watching an adaptation can also make the novel’s formal choices clearer by showing what must be compressed or externalized.

There is no evidence in the cited records for a universal ranking of the four versions by fidelity. A fair judgment should specify its criterion: closeness to plot, preservation of interior monologue, emphasis on class, handling of sexual material, acting, visual design or accessibility. A reliable way to compare a film with the novel
- Choose the exact version. Write down the year, director, distributor or platform, runtime shown on your copy and any classification information.
- Read the source passage first. Mark narration, dialogue, setting, social context and events that seem essential to the chapter.
- Watch without pausing for verdicts. Note what the film makes you feel and understand before consulting reviews or production commentary.
- Map the structure. List the film’s major scenes in order, then place each beside its nearest episode in the novel. Identify merges, relocations and omissions.
- Separate evidence from interpretation. “The film removes this conversation” is an observable claim; “the director does not care about class” is an interpretation that needs stronger support.
- Assess the adaptation by a stated criterion. Decide whether you are measuring plot fidelity, psychological depth, social analysis, erotic tone, visual storytelling or something else.
- Record edition-specific limits. If your copy has a different runtime, cut or subtitle track, say so when sharing your conclusion.
Runtime, access and viewing cautions
Runtime figures are not interchangeable. The British Council’s 112-minute entry and the BBFC’s 125-minute-55-second cinema listing and 125-minute home-entertainment listing all concern the 2022 film, but they may represent different cuts or catalog methods. Report the issuing catalog and version whenever the number matters.
The 2015 Netflix page includes an explicit statement that the title is unavailable in the viewer’s country. Check local availability at the time of viewing; a page that exists in one territory does not guarantee access in another. The records cited here do not establish universal streaming access for any adaptation.
For content planning, the BBFC lists frequent strong sex scenes, strong nudity and strong language for the 2022 film. Classification standards differ by country and release, so consult the notice attached to the edition you intend to show, especially for classroom, family or group viewing.

The most defensible conclusion is not that one film “is” the novel. Lawrence’s book remains the only version that contains the complete source narrative and its original prose. Start with the novel when your question is what Lawrence wrote. Start with the 2022 film when you want the most recently documented feature and can confirm which cut you are watching. Treat the 1993 and 1981 films as historically distinct adaptations whose detailed comparison requires attention to the particular copies available. Then make your own judgment with the criterion stated plainly.
