Kimberly Antwinette Porter’s official cause of death remains lobar pneumonia, and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner certified the manner of death as natural. Porter was found unresponsive at her Toluca Lake residence on November 15, 2018, and was pronounced dead at 11:40 a.m. The county announced the final determination on January 25, 2019—it was not a new ruling issued after the later documentaries and online claims.

Subsequent allegations about poisoning, murder, an altered autopsy, or Sean Combs’ involvement have renewed public interest, but no verified public evidence located in the available record has displaced the county’s finding. The public record also does not identify the specific organism that caused the pneumonia.

The official finding in brief

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s final public determination was:

Porter was Sean Combs’ former longtime girlfriend, not his former wife. They had an on-and-off relationship beginning in the 1990s and shared three children. Porter also had a son, Quincy Brown, from her earlier relationship with musician Al B. Sure! She worked as a model and actress. That relationship history explains why Combs is part of coverage about Porter, but it is not evidence that he caused her death.

What does lobar pneumonia mean?

Lobar pneumonia is a medical description of where and how pneumonia affected the lung, not the name of a particular germ. In general, the word lobar refers to infection and consolidation concentrated in a lung lobe. A person can develop pneumonia from bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other infectious causes. The term alone does not establish that the illness was bacterial.

The publicly circulated autopsy face sheet describes the finding more specifically as right lower-lung lobar pneumonia. It does not, based on the material publicly available in the research record, identify a pathogen. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Porter died from pneumococcal pneumonia, influenza pneumonia, COVID-19, or another named infection without a primary laboratory or pathology report supporting that claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CDC’s overview of pneumonia explains that pneumonia can range from mild illness to a severe, life-threatening infection. Severe pneumonia may lead to inadequate oxygen levels, respiratory failure, bloodstream infection, pleural complications, or pulmonary edema. The NCBI pulmonary-infection reference also describes pneumonia as a group of infections rather than a single disease caused by one organism.

That medical background explains how pneumonia can be fatal, but it does not provide a private medical history for Porter or establish the precise mechanism or timing of her death.

What the public autopsy material shows

The county’s press release confirms the certified cause and manner of death, the autopsy date, and the case number. It does not reproduce a complete autopsy, toxicology report, investigator’s narrative, or laboratory file.

A one-page autopsy face sheet circulated online and hosted by the third-party archive Autopsyfiles.org is consistent with the county’s announcement. However, it is not hosted on the county’s official website, so it should be treated as a publicly circulated copy rather than as a substitute for obtaining the complete county file.

Findings reported on the circulated face sheet

  • Right lower-lung lobar pneumonia
  • Bilateral pleural purulent effusions, meaning pus-containing fluid in the spaces around the lungs
  • Acute bilateral pleuritis, or inflammation of both pleural linings
  • Marked pulmonary edema, meaning substantial fluid accumulation in the lungs
  • Patchy small-bowel ischemic necrosis
  • A uterine serosal leiomyoma, a type of fibroid
  • Blunt trauma to the extremities, including a left-bicep contusion
  • Early decomposition changes

The important distinction is between a finding and a certified cause of death. The face sheet’s cause-of-death line identifies lobar pneumonia. The other listed observations should not automatically be described as causes or contributing causes unless the complete report or death certificate classifies them that way.

For example, the presence of a contusion does not by itself establish an assault, and the listing of bowel ischemic necrosis does not mean that it displaced pneumonia as the certified cause. The publicly available material does not establish that either finding caused Porter’s death.

The documented timeline

High-confidence official timeline

Date or time What the official record says
November 15, 2018 Porter was found unresponsive at her Toluca Lake residence.
11:40 a.m. She was pronounced dead.
November 16, 2018 The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner performed an autopsy.
January 25, 2019 The county announced lobar pneumonia as the cause of death and natural as the manner of death.

The official releases do not establish the precise moment when Porter died, the exact physiological sequence that led to death, or whether she died while asleep. They establish when she was found and when she was pronounced dead.

Details reported by news organizations

News reports that described documents they said they had obtained reported that Porter had experienced flu-like symptoms for several days. Those accounts referred to a sore throat, a home medical visit, a reported fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit, negative influenza and strep tests, treatment with azithromycin, and later worsening or changing symptoms. Reports also described a small streak of blood in her phlegm and saline and vitamin infusions.

Those details were reported by outlets including Fox News, TMZ, and a Yahoo/In Touch summary. They should be attributed to those reports rather than presented as though they appear in the county’s short press release.

Similarly, media accounts described postmortem toxicology as unremarkable and said that narcotics or alcohol were not identified. The careful formulation is: news reports describing the investigative file said toxicology did not identify narcotics or alcohol. That is not the same as independently reviewing the complete county laboratory report or claiming that toxicology proved Porter had no substances in her system.

Nor do reported symptoms prove whether the infection was viral or bacterial, when pneumonia began, or why the illness progressed. A news account is not a complete medical chart.

Why was the cause initially listed as deferred?

The county’s first announcement said that the cause of death had not yet been determined. After the November 16 autopsy, the cause remained deferred while the investigation and additional testing continued. On January 25, 2019, the county issued the final cause-and-manner determination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a medical-examiner case, a deferred cause generally means that the pathologist needs additional information before signing the death certificate. Depending on the case, that can include toxicology, microscopic examination, medical-record review, scene information, or other laboratory testing. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s information page explains the agency’s role and the types of materials that may be part of a case file.

A deferred cause is therefore a status during the certification process, not a finding that homicide was suspected. The county examines sudden, unusual, and unattended deaths, including deaths that ultimately receive a natural classification.

How could pneumonia kill someone who appeared healthy?

Porter was 47 when she died, and public descriptions of her did not necessarily suggest serious chronic illness. That can make the official finding seem surprising. But an apparently healthy baseline does not rule out a fatal acute infection.

Pneumonia can become dangerous when inflammation and fluid interfere with oxygen exchange. Severe infection can also produce respiratory failure, bloodstream infection, inflammation or infection around the lungs, and other complications. The CDC’s information on pneumococcal disease describes serious complications that can occur with severe pneumococcal infection, although the public record does not establish that Porter had pneumococcal disease specifically.

It is also important not to infer undisclosed risk factors from the outcome. The available public record does not provide enough verified information to identify every health factor Porter may or may not have had. The official cause was based on the medical examiner’s autopsy and investigative process, not simply on an assumption that she had the flu.

What later claims say—and what they establish

The disputed Kim’s Lost Words memoir

Renewed speculation intensified in 2024 after the publication of a self-published book presented as a memoir or diary attributed to Porter, commonly referred to as Kim’s Lost Words. The book contained claims about Porter’s relationship with Combs and became a major source for online theories about her death.

Porter’s children said that she did not write the book and disputed its claims about their parents’ relationship. Friends also questioned its authenticity. The publisher said the material came from sources allegedly close to Porter and Combs, but acknowledged uncertainty about whether the material was authentic. Amazon removed the title after being made aware of the dispute.

The Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press reported on the dispute and removal. The defensible conclusion is that the book’s authenticity was disputed and its claims were not independently verified. Its publication or removal does not constitute forensic evidence that Porter’s death was a homicide.

Al B. Sure!’s calls for further investigation

Al B. Sure!, Porter’s former partner and the father of her oldest child, publicly questioned the official account and called for further investigation. Those statements are allegations and advocacy, not an official finding or independently verified forensic evidence.

There are three separate questions here:

  • Claim: A person close to Porter publicly questioned the death.
  • Evidence: The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner certified lobar pneumonia as the cause and natural death as the manner.
  • Unresolved issue: Whether any new, admissible evidence exists that would justify reopening or changing the case.

No verified public notice located in the available record says that Los Angeles County amended Porter’s cause of death or publicly reopened the death investigation because of new forensic evidence.

The 2025 Peacock documentary

The Peacock documentary Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy, identified on Peacock’s official program page, revived discussion of Porter’s death and included interviews in which allegations were raised.

Combs sued NBCUniversal and related parties, alleging that the documentary defamed him and falsely implicated him in deaths including Porter’s. An April 2026 New York court opinion discussed the documentary’s treatment of the claims, its sourcing, and its disclaimers. The court concluded, at the civil pleading stage, that the documentary’s handling of the allegations did not meet the applicable gross-irresponsibility standard needed for Combs’ defamation claim.

That ruling does not amount to a criminal finding about Porter’s death. It addresses whether a civil defamation claim could proceed under the relevant legal standard. It does not replace the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s cause-and-manner certification and does not independently prove either the allegations in the documentary or Combs’ responsibility for Porter’s death. The 2026 court opinion is useful for understanding the litigation, but it should not be read as a new forensic determination.

What has not been verified

The following claims have not been established by reliable public evidence in the available record:

  • That Sean Combs caused Porter’s death.
  • That Porter was poisoned.
  • That a first autopsy concluded poisoning or homicide.
  • That the official autopsy was secretly changed or replaced.
  • That the coroner or medical examiner involved in the case was killed because of Porter’s death.
  • That law enforcement reopened the death investigation because of new forensic evidence.
  • That the public record identifies the pathogen that caused the pneumonia.

Claims such as these circulate widely in social-media posts, video commentary, and documentaries. They should be described as unsupported allegations unless accompanied by a verifiable primary record, such as an amended medical-examiner finding, a laboratory report, a court filing containing authenticated evidence, or an official law-enforcement announcement.

What does the phrase no foul play mean here?

Contemporaneous reporting quoted or paraphrased the Los Angeles Police Department as saying that foul play was not suspected. The 2026 court opinion also described the documentary as stating that LAPD had no suspicion of foul play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That wording should not be presented as though it appears in the county’s final cause-of-death release. The county’s official release identifies the cause as lobar pneumonia and the manner as natural; it does not use the exact phrase no foul play. The safest summary is that authorities were reportedly not treating the death as suspicious, while the formal medical-examiner classification was natural.

Why a police-records denial does not prove a cover-up

In 2024, a public-records request for LAPD files relating to Porter was denied because investigative records were exempt from disclosure. LAPD directed the requester to the county Medical Examiner for autopsy-related records. The response was documented by MuckRock.

That denial does not prove that no police file exists, that no investigation occurred, or that evidence was suppressed. It means only that the requested investigative materials were not released through that particular request. Police records can be withheld for legal and investigative reasons even when a death is ultimately classified as natural.

For the complete medical record, the county is the relevant records custodian. The county says a case file may include the autopsy, investigative narrative, toxicology, criminalist findings, and other laboratory materials. The third-party face sheet is therefore useful context, but the complete official report is the stronger source for any claim about toxicology, microscopic findings, or contributing conditions.

How to weigh the competing sources

Readers assessing a documentary, viral video, or alleged memoir should separate the evidence into levels:

  1. Officially established: the date, location, pronouncement time, autopsy date, case number, certified cause, and certified manner of death stated by Los Angeles County.
  2. Supported by a circulated autopsy face sheet: the listed lung, pleural, edema, bowel, uterine, contusion, and decomposition findings—while recognizing that the copy is hosted by a third party.
  3. Reported but requiring attribution: symptoms, treatment, scene details, and toxicology descriptions reported by news organizations that said they reviewed documents.
  4. Disputed or unverified: the alleged memoir’s authorship and claims, poisoning theories, murder theories, altered-report claims, and cover-up allegations.
  5. Not publicly established: the specific pathogen, precise time of death, precise physiological mechanism, or evidence tying Combs to Porter’s death.

The strongest public evidence remains the county’s final certification. Court opinions and reputable reporting can add context, but neither an entertainment documentary nor a civil ruling automatically changes a medical-examiner finding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Kim Porter’s death officially ruled a homicide?

No. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner certified lobar pneumonia as the cause of death and natural as the manner of death. Later allegations have not been shown in the available public record to change that classification.

Does lobar pneumonia mean Kim Porter had a bacterial infection?

Not necessarily. Lobar describes the distribution or pathological pattern of pneumonia. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other pathogens, and the public record does not identify the specific organism in Porter’s case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did the autopsy prove that Kim Porter was poisoned?

No reliable primary source in the available record establishes poisoning. Media reports described toxicology as unremarkable, but the complete laboratory report should be consulted before making a definitive claim about toxicology.

Did Sean Combs cause Kim Porter’s death?

There is no verified public evidence in the available record establishing that Combs caused Porter’s death. His relationship with Porter explains why he is discussed in later coverage, but allegations in a disputed memoir or documentary are not forensic proof.

Why did the county initially defer the cause of death?

A deferred cause generally means that the medical examiner was waiting for additional testing, toxicology, medical records, microscopic examination, or investigative information. It is a routine certification status and does not by itself indicate suspected homicide.

Where can the complete autopsy report be obtained?

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner is the relevant records source. The one-page copy circulating online is hosted by a third party and should not be treated as a substitute for the complete county autopsy, investigative, toxicology, and laboratory records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The official public finding remains unchanged: Los Angeles County certified Kim Porter’s cause of death as lobar pneumonia and the manner of death as natural. The face sheet and attributed news reports provide additional context, but they do not identify a pathogen or establish poisoning, homicide, an altered autopsy, or Sean Combs’ responsibility. Later claims have generated renewed scrutiny without publicly displacing the county’s determination.
