The series is based on characters from James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels, but its television mysteries are original rather than direct adaptations of individual books.
What Ben Watkins actually revealed about Season 2
In a Collider interview published on November 20, 2024, Ben Watkins confirmed that Cross Season 2 was much further along than viewers realized. It was not merely being planned, and it was not waiting for Amazon to decide whether to order it.

- Filming began in April 2024.
- Production finished in September 2024.
- Post-production was underway by the November interview.
Watkins also identified the season by its internal or thematic title, Bitter Fruit. In other words, the headline-making revelation was that Amazon had filmed an entire second season before the first season had even premiered for the public.

There is an important distinction between “filmed” and “ready to stream.” Principal photography had ended, but editing, visual effects, music, legal clearances, localization, marketing, and release scheduling could still take many months. The eventual gap between Watkins’ confirmation and the premiere demonstrates why a completed shoot was not the same thing as an imminent release.
Was Cross officially renewed?
Yes. Prime Video renewed Cross for an eight-episode second season on April 30, 2024—months before Season 1 debuted. TVLine reported the renewal at the time.
That sequence matters. Amazon did not announce a speculative follow-up after the show became a hit; it commissioned Season 2 early enough for the writers’ room, production, and post-production to be well underway by the time audiences watched Season 1. Season 1 eventually premiered on November 14, 2024.
Amazon later said that Season 1 reached more than 40 million viewers globally during its first 20 days. That is an Amazon-reported worldwide figure, not a Nielsen rating or an independently audited domestic audience measurement, but it helps explain the level of confidence behind the early renewal.

What does the title ‘Bitter Fruit’ mean?
Bitter Fruit is not being presented as the title of a James Patterson novel that Season 2 directly adapts. Watkins has described the show’s seasons as original mysteries built around Patterson’s characters and world.
The title is instead a thematic signpost. Season 2 examines what happens when people pursue justice outside the legal system, particularly when revenge begins with a seemingly righteous motive and turns into something destructive. The central tension is between lawful justice and personal justice: who gets to punish wrongdoing, what happens when institutions fail, and whether a morally appealing goal can justify violent methods.

In a Los Angeles Times discussion of Season 2, Watkins explained that the story is concerned with vengeance and vigilantism, including the point at which people who believe they are correcting injustice go too far.
Does Season 2 continue the Fanboy Killer story?
Not as its central mystery. Season 1’s main serial killer was Ed “Fanboy” Ramsey, played by Ryan Eggold. Season 2 moves to a new case involving a vigilante who targets wealthy and corrupt figures.

Contemporaneous coverage discussed whether Eggold might return and whether Ramsey could remain part of the broader story. That possibility should not be confused with the season’s main premise, however. Season 2 is structured around a new investigation rather than another primary manhunt for the Fanboy Killer. The shift also reflects Watkins’ stated intention to treat each season as a new Alex Cross case while continuing the characters’ personal arcs.
So the best short answer is: Cross Season 2 does not simply pick up the Fanboy Killer plot as its main storyline, although the show can still carry forward consequences and relationships established in Season 1.
What is Season 2 about?
The season begins when billionaire business titan Lance Durand, played by Matthew Lillard, receives a death threat. The threat is connected to the murder of a wealthy playboy, leading Alex Cross and FBI Agent Kayla Craig into an investigation involving powerful people and a vigilante campaign.

- the protection that money and status can provide; and
- the moral danger of responding to exploitation through private violence.
Watkins said the season had been written before some of those subjects became especially prominent in the surrounding news cycle. Its relevance was therefore not intended as a prediction of specific real-world events. The show’s billionaire and exploitation storyline simply arrived during a period when those issues were receiving unusually intense public attention. Season 2 also gives John Sampson a more developed personal storyline. Watkins said he wanted the series to expand its ensemble rather than keep every major development exclusively centered on Cross. That broader approach gives Sampson, Kayla, and other members of the team more room to carry emotional and investigative stakes of their own.

The public record supports a long interval between filming and release, but it does not establish that Season 2 was formally delayed. Amazon had not announced a previous premiere date that was later moved, so “delayed” would be stronger than the available evidence allows.

Where can you watch Cross Season 2?
All eight episodes of Season 2 are streaming exclusively on Prime Video. The series is available in more than 240 countries and territories, subject to local catalog availability. Amazon’s viewing guide provides the current streaming information.
Because the complete season is now available, viewers no longer need to follow the original weekly schedule. The practical viewing order is simply Season 1 followed by Season 2, although the second season’s central case is distinct from the Fanboy Killer investigation.
Spoilers: what Season 2 sets up
The completed season resolves its central questions around the vigilante campaign, Luz’s identity, Lance Durand’s crimes, and Kayla’s decisions. Its most consequential endpoint for the continuing series is Alex Cross turning in his badge.

As of August 10, 2026, Season 3 is in production but has no officially announced release date. There is no confirmed basis for saying it will premiere in 2027. Watkins’ earlier comments about having a four-year plan and hoping the series could eventually run for 10 seasons describe creative ambitions, not guaranteed renewals or a fixed schedule. At present, Season 3 is the only officially confirmed future season.
