The National Theatre’s official streaming service, National Theatre at Home, lets you watch filmed stage productions on demand through a subscription, a one-off rental, or free registered content such as selected clips and interviews. It is promoted as available worldwide, but rights can restrict individual titles by country. Check the production page before paying.
What National Theatre at Home offers
National Theatre at Home is the National Theatre’s online catalogue of professionally filmed theatre—not a live-stream replacement for attending a performance. Its catalogue includes National Theatre Live recordings, archive productions, enhanced recordings and supporting material such as trailers and interviews. The service describes the catalogue as containing more than 100 shows, with titles added and removed over time, so availability should be checked against the current catalogue.
The service advertises worldwide access, including for viewers in the United States. Worldwide platform availability does not mean every production is licensed everywhere: title-level restrictions may apply. The National Theatre has, for example, announced a U.S. restriction for a particular release. Treat that as evidence that restrictions can occur, not as a current catalogue listing. Check the specific title page in your country before subscribing or renting.

A subscription provides unlimited access to titles included in the plan, without a viewing-time limit, as well as behind-the-scenes material. Do not assume every catalogue title is included: pages may offer subscription access, rental, or neither in your territory. If you have one play in mind, compare its rental price with the current monthly subscription. If you plan to watch several titles, add up the rentals you would actually buy and compare that total with the plan price.

For example, the catalogue has shown rentals such as Home at $7.99 and This House at $9.99; some versions of Frankenstein have been listed at $11.99. These are title-specific examples, not standard rental rates.
How much does it cost?
U.S. price snapshot, August 2026: the U.S. Apple App Store listing showed $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year. The service promotes its annual plan as 12 months for the price of 10. Rental prices vary by title. Prices and taxes may differ by country and by whether you subscribe on the website, through Apple, or through another app store; the final checkout screen is the price to rely on. How to watch on a TV
The service lists apps or access for Apple TV, Roku and Roku TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, selected Samsung Smart TVs and selected LG Smart TVs. Compatibility depends on model and software; “smart TV” alone does not guarantee that the app is available.

- Open your TV or streaming device’s app store and search for National Theatre at Home.
- Install the official app and sign in to the account associated with your subscription or rental.
- Open the production page, check its access option, then start playback.
If the app is missing or your television is too old, watch through a supported streaming device, use the service in a computer browser and connect the computer to the TV with HDMI, or play through a supported phone or tablet. The service’s TV viewing information lists its supported routes.
How to watch on a computer, phone or tablet
Computer: Go to ntathome.com, register or sign in, browse the catalogue, and open the production you want. Check whether the page says it is available with a subscription or offers a rental, complete the relevant purchase if needed, then select the play control.
Phone or tablet: Install the National Theatre at Home app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, sign in with the account used to subscribe or rent, and select a title to play. The platform’s device overview lists iOS 12.0+ and Android 5.0+, but the current Apple App Store listing requires iOS/iPadOS 15.0 or later. App requirements can be stricter than an older general device guide, so check the store listing for your device before installing. On a computer, the service lists minimum browser versions of Chrome 71, Edge 88, Safari 13 and Firefox 78; an up-to-date browser is preferable.

Free National Theatre content
A free registered account can be used to watch selected highlights, interviews, trailers and behind-the-scenes material on the free theatre page. That is a useful way to explore the service, but it is not free access to the full productions catalogue. Do not count on older free YouTube releases as a dependable way to watch a particular show on demand; check the official service for current access.

Choose a production—and check its version
The catalogue spans Shakespeare and other classics, contemporary British drama, adaptations, political and historical plays, musicals, archive recordings and large-scale productions. Current catalogue examples have included Othello, Best of Enemies, Hex, All About Eve, This House, Paradise, Peter Pan and The Father and the Assassin. These are examples, not a permanent or ranked “best of” list.
Look closely when a title has more than one filmed version. The catalogue has offered two versions of Frankenstein featuring different creature performances. Read the production description and cast details so you rent or play the version you intended. For family viewing, check each show’s description, running time and subject matter: some productions include strong language, violence, sexual references or other mature themes. The app’s age rating is not a rating for every individual play.

Accessibility and downloads
Accessibility options vary by production. Some titles offer subtitles or captions, audio description, or a British Sign Language (BSL) version; some have a separate accessibility edition. Check the production page before paying and look for the captions or subtitles control in the player. For an example, the catalogue has a dedicated audio-described version of This House. The presence of a feature on one title does not mean it is available across the catalogue.
The support centre provides instructions for downloading videos on Android and iPhone/iPad. Downloads are a mobile-app option, not a guarantee that every title can be saved for offline viewing indefinitely. Check the app and the title’s access details; availability may depend on the content, device, account and rights. The support centre has guidance on downloads, subtitles and playback.

A title is missing or locked
It may have left the catalogue, be rental-only or subscription-only, be unavailable in your country, or appear under a different production version. Search the official catalogue and open the exact title page. If you purchased through Apple or Google, confirm you are signed in to the account linked to that purchase; then try the app’s restore-purchases option, sign out and back in, and check whether the title requires a separate rental. If it remains locked, use the official support centre.

The app does not appear on your TV
Check whether your exact television model or streaming device is supported. If it is not, use a supported streaming device, connect a computer to the TV by HDMI, or watch on a supported mobile device.
Playback buffers or skips
As practical first steps, update the app and device, close other bandwidth-heavy apps, restart the streaming device and router, and try another network or a wired connection. On a computer, try an updated browser. If the player offers a video-quality setting, lowering it may help on a slower connection. These are general troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
Captions or downloads are unavailable
Features are title-specific. Check the production page for an accessibility edition, inspect the player controls, and consult support if a feature shown for your title is not working.

Cancel through the billing provider you used: Apple subscriptions in Apple account settings, Google Play subscriptions in Google Play, and website subscriptions through your National Theatre at Home account or its support instructions. App-store subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled in time under that provider’s terms; the U.S. Apple listing says to turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Do not assume that deadline applies to every billing channel. Check your account for the renewal date and cancellation confirmation.
Is National Theatre at Home live?
It is primarily an on-demand service for recorded performances. If you specifically want a genuinely live event, look for separately advertised live streams or attend a cinema screening of a National Theatre Live broadcast when one is available; these are different from watching an on-demand recording.
What if you want more than National Theatre?
BroadwayHD is a separate theatre-streaming service, not the National Theatre’s platform. It may suit viewers seeking a broader mix of stage recordings, but its catalogue does not guarantee access to a particular National Theatre production. Its support information describes viewing on computers, phones, tablets, selected smart TVs and streaming devices, and a separate Prime Video Channels option in the United States.
