There are five released mainline Die Hard feature films, and the correct release order is also the chronological story order:
- Die Hard (1988)
- Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)
- Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
- Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
- A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
Start with the 1988 original and continue in that sequence. There are no released prequels or interquels that need to be inserted into the timeline. The official franchise list identifies these five films as the released movie series.
The Die Hard movies in order at a glance
| # | Film | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Die Hard | 1988 |
| 2 | Die Hard 2: Die Harder | 1990 |
| 3 | Die Hard with a Vengeance | 1995 |
| 4 | Live Free or Die Hard | 2007 |
| 5 | A Good Day to Die Hard | 2013 |
Is release order the same as chronological order?
Yes. For the five released mainline films, release order and story chronology are identical. John McClane’s story moves forward from 1988 to 2013, with no released origin story, prequel, or side movie that complicates the sequence. Release order is therefore the simplest and best option for both first-time viewers and returning fans.
Watching in order also preserves the development of McClane’s personal history, recurring relationships, and the franchise’s changing action style. Each film can be understood on its own, but starting anywhere other than the original means losing some of that progression.
Every Die Hard movie in order

The title is listed for rental or purchase through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home. Check the JustWatch U.S. listing before watching, because Prime Video availability can mean included access, an ad-supported listing, or a separate transaction depending on the offer.
2. Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)
- U.S. release date: July 4, 1990
- Runtime: 2 hours 3 minutes
- Rating: R
- Director: Renny Harlin
While waiting for his wife’s plane at Washington Dulles International Airport, McClane is caught in a terrorist takeover. The film is commonly searchable as both Die Hard 2 and Die Hard 2: Die Harder; try both forms, ideally with the year, if a platform search produces no result. See the official film page for the studio’s published details.

McClane is forced into a deadly series of challenges across New York City alongside Zeus Carver, a civilian pulled into the crisis. 4. Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
- U.S. release date: June 27, 2007
- Runtime: 2 hours 9 minutes
- Rating: PG-13
- Director: Len Wiseman
McClane teams up with a young hacker to stop a cyberterrorist attack aimed at U.S. infrastructure. This is the only one of the five films carrying a PG-13 rating on the current studio pages, although it still contains intense action, violence, and mature themes.
The film is often called Die Hard 4.0, particularly in international markets and digital listings. That is an alternate title for the fourth film, not a separate movie. The official film page uses Live Free or Die Hard.

The availability entries come from the five JustWatch U.S. title pages: Die Hard 2, With a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard, and A Good Day to Die Hard. The first four films are concentrated on fuboTV and FXNow in this snapshot, while the fifth is listed separately on HBO Max-related services. Do not assume that one subscription includes all five.
Subscription, free, rental, and purchase are different
- Included streaming: A title may be available inside a service’s existing subscription catalog.
- Channel access: A listing such as HBO Max Amazon Channel may require a separate channel subscription, even if you already use Amazon.
- Free with ads: YouTube Free with ads or Amazon Prime Video with Ads does not necessarily mean every version is free everywhere; confirm the listing and playback conditions.
- Rental: The recent listings show many of the films at approximately $3.99 per rental, but the checkout amount can vary by retailer, tax, promotion, and date.
- Purchase: A digital purchase is normally a separate transaction and should not be confused with a film merely appearing in a Prime Video search.
- Physical media: DVD and Blu-ray editions are the most stable fallback when streaming rights are split. Individual discs and boxed sets vary by country, retailer, included extras, and cut.
At the listed $3.99 rental price, renting all five would have a nominal total of $19.95 before tax. That is a snapshot calculation, not a guaranteed bundle price.
Are there different versions of the films?
Live Free or Die Hard: theatrical and unrated versions
The theatrical release of Live Free or Die Hard is PG-13. An unrated version has appeared on some DVD and Blu-ray releases, restoring stronger language and more graphic violence. A digital or streaming listing may provide only the theatrical version, so do not assume that a title labeled simply Live Free or Die Hard includes the unrated material.
Rank #3
If you want a consistent historical marathon, use the theatrical cuts. If you are collecting the home-video editions or specifically want the harder-edged version, check the product description for the word Unrated before buying or starting playback. Background on the alternate version is available in the film’s IMDb FAQ and the film’s alternate-version overview.

Some home-video editions of A Good Day to Die Hard include a Harder Extended Cut of approximately 101 minutes, compared with the theatrical version’s approximately 97–98 minutes. The extended edition is not automatically a director’s cut; use that label only when the specific release identifies it that way. Streaming services may offer only the theatrical version.
Edition details for the Blu-ray release are documented by Blu-ray.com, while technical listings can be compared through IMDb’s technical page.
Why runtimes sometimes disagree
The official studio pages list Die Hard 2 at 2 hours 3 minutes and A Good Day to Die Hard at 1 hour 37 minutes. Some streaming databases display approximately 124 and 98 minutes instead. Differences can come from metadata rounding, platform conventions, or alternate editions. Use the studio figures for the standard marathon calculation, and check the specific version if runtime matters to your schedule.
How long is the complete marathon?
Using the official studio runtimes, all five films total 609 minutes, or 10 hours 9 minutes, before breaks, menus, trailers, or platform advertisements.

| Total | 609 minutes / 10 hours 9 minutes |
For a practical marathon, plan on roughly 11–12 hours once meals, bathroom breaks, disc changes, and streaming interruptions are included. A two-day schedule is more comfortable: watch the first two films together as the Christmas-set pair, then finish the remaining three on the second day.
Are the first two the only Christmas-set films?
Yes, they are the clearest Christmas entries. The original takes place during a Christmas visit to Los Angeles, and Die Hard 2 takes place around Christmas Eve while McClane waits at the airport. The later films move away from that holiday setting, so the full franchise is not five Christmas movies.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to watch every film in order?
Not strictly. The movies are self-contained action stories, so a viewer can follow the basic plot of an individual entry without seeing the previous films. The recommended order still matters because it introduces McClane properly, follows changes in his relationships and circumstances, and shows how the series develops from a relatively contained thriller into increasingly large-scale action.

First-time viewer: Watch all five in release order, beginning with Die Hard.
Returning fan: Use the same order unless your purpose is to compare editions. A theatrical-cut marathon gives the most consistent historical comparison; an unrated Live Free or Die Hard or extended A Good Day to Die Hard can be added when the chosen release explicitly includes it.
Viewer with limited time: Watch the 1988 original first. It is the essential starting point even if you later decide not to complete the series.
Ratings and family-viewing note
Four of the five films are rated R on the current 20th Century Studios pages: Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and A Good Day to Die Hard. Live Free or Die Hard is rated PG-13. That rating does not make it a children’s film; it still contains intense action, violence, peril, and mature themes. Check the official studio pages linked in the film sections for the current listed ratings.
Title searches that prevent confusion
- For the second movie, search Die Hard 2 or Die Hard 2: Die Harder.
- For the fourth movie, search Live Free or Die Hard or Die Hard 4.0.
- For the fifth movie, search the official title A Good Day to Die Hard. Die Hard 5 is an informal search alias, not the official title.
- For any entry, add the release year to distinguish the film from unrelated titles, games, or similarly named results.
The Prime Video five-movie collection listing also uses title variants, including Die Hard 4.0, while the Apple TV U.S. collection page can help locate the films as a group.

What counts as a Die Hard movie?
This guide covers the five released mainline feature films starring John McClane. It does not include the Die Hard: Year One comics, Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza or other video games, fan-made videos sometimes promoted as Die Hard 6, television appearances, advertisements, or unrelated Bruce Willis films described as being in the style of Die Hard.
The currently released film canon ends with A Good Day to Die Hard in 2013. That describes the released series as it exists now; it does not claim that no future project could ever be made. No additional released film belongs in the present watch order.
Frequently Asked Questions
