This event took place on September 6–7, 2024. Boeing’s Starliner has already returned to Earth without astronauts. The original official coverage was available through NASA+, NASA’s website and app, and NASA’s official YouTube channel. Starliner landed at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico at approximately midnight Eastern time on September 7, 2024.
Where to watch the replay
NASA was the primary source for the Starliner undocking, reentry and landing coverage. The original broadcast was distributed through:
- NASA+
- NASA’s official YouTube channel
- NASA’s website and NASA TV pages
- The NASA app
- Boeing’s Starliner mission website
For an archive search, use terms such as NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test Re-entry and Landing or Starliner Crew Flight Test return. Availability of an old scheduled livestream can change, so NASA’s landing report and official YouTube channel are the most reliable starting points.
The original NASA video listing is available on YouTube, and NASA’s account of the completed landing is available in its September 7, 2024 report.

The original broadcast schedule
NASA divided the coverage into two main blocks: one for departure from the International Space Station and another for the deorbit burn, atmospheric entry and landing. These were the published times before the mission began:
| Event | Scheduled time |
|---|---|
| Undocking coverage began | 5:45 p.m. EDT, September 6, 2024 |
| Starliner undocked from the ISS | 6:04 p.m. EDT |
| Reentry and landing coverage resumed | 10:50 p.m. EDT |
| Targeted landing | 12:03 a.m. EDT, September 7 |
| Post-landing news conference | 1:30 a.m. EDT |
NASA noted that the schedule could change because of weather and real-time mission operations. Boeing listed the corresponding target landing time as 10:03 p.m. Mountain time, reflecting the landing site in New Mexico.

Time-zone guide
| Time zone | Landing coverage resumed | Target landing |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 10:50 p.m. | 12:03 a.m. |
| Central | 9:50 p.m. | 11:03 p.m. |
| Mountain | 8:50 p.m. | 10:03 p.m. |
| Pacific | 7:50 p.m. | 9:03 p.m. |
A later NASA operational timeline used Central Time and gave more precise milestones: deorbit burn at 10:17:13 p.m., entry interface at 10:45:25 p.m., blackout from 10:47:54 to 10:52:25 p.m., drogue-chute deployment at 10:56:24 p.m., main-parachute deployment at 10:57:31 p.m., airbag inflation at 10:58:31 p.m., and landing at 11:00:52 p.m. Central. That timeline was more specific than the earlier public target, not evidence of a contradiction.
NASA’s original schedule and coverage details are in its coverage advisory. The detailed timeline is available as a NASA PDF.

Why did Starliner return without astronauts?
Starliner launched on June 5, 2024, with NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard. During the mission, engineers investigated helium leaks and problems involving the spacecraft’s reaction-control thrusters. NASA ultimately decided that bringing the astronauts home aboard Starliner posed too much risk.
Wilmore and Williams therefore remained on the International Space Station, while Starliner returned autonomously under the supervision of its onboard systems and mission control. “Empty” is useful shorthand, but the spacecraft was not uncontrolled or inert. It still had to perform its departure, deorbit, atmospheric entry, parachute descent and landing sequence.

The astronauts later returned aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon rather than Starliner. NASA’s decision and the original return plan are explained in its official coverage announcement.

The capsule landed at White Sands Space Harbor, inside the U.S. Army’s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. This was a controlled landing zone, not a public roadside viewing location. The broadcast—not an attempt to travel to the landing area—was the appropriate way to follow the event.

Because the landing occurred around midnight Eastern time, it was nighttime at the New Mexico site. Viewers should not expect a clear daylight view of a capsule descending over the desert. Mission-control audio, telemetry, animation and intermittent camera views could be as important as the external video.
What the broadcast showed
The undocking portion included operations around the International Space Station, mission-control commentary and the spacecraft’s departure. The later coverage followed the return sequence:
- Deorbit burn to leave low Earth orbit
- Atmospheric entry and the expected communications blackout
- Heat-shield and entry operations
- Drogue- and main-parachute deployment
- Airbag inflation
- Touchdown and recovery operations at White Sands
A temporary loss of communication during blackout is expected during atmospheric reentry. It is not, by itself, evidence that something has gone wrong.
What happened
Starliner undocked from the space station on September 6, 2024, and returned without Wilmore and Williams. NASA reported that the spacecraft landed safely at White Sands Space Harbor at approximately 12:00 a.m. EDT on September 7—slightly ahead of the earlier 12:03 a.m. target.
