For reliable YouTube audio with your Samsung screen locked, use YouTube Premium in the official YouTube app and enable Background play. If you only need to keep watching while using another app, picture-in-picture (PiP) may work for eligible videos. Samsung Internet has its own Background play setting, but it is not a dependable free substitute: YouTube can restrict playback in browsers.
Choose the playback you want
“Background play” can mean three different things. The right method depends on whether you want audio with the screen off, a video floating over another app, or browser audio after minimizing Samsung Internet.

Use YouTube Premium for screen-off playback
YouTube lists background playback in its mobile apps as a Premium benefit. Sign in to the Google account that has Premium; availability can depend on location and whether the relevant app is available. The setting applies to YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids where those apps are available. See YouTube’s background-play help.
- Update YouTube through Google Play if playback is behaving unexpectedly.
- Open YouTube and confirm that the account shown in the account or profile area is the one with Premium.
- Open Settings and select Background & downloads.
- Tap Background play and choose Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers. YouTube identifies Always on as the default Premium setting.
- Play a regular long-form video, then press Home or swipe up to leave YouTube. Lock the screen and check that playback continues through the lock-screen or notification media controls.
Menu labels can vary with YouTube releases and Samsung navigation settings. Background play is unavailable in the YouTube Shorts player, according to YouTube.

Use picture-in-picture to watch while multitasking
PiP shrinks supported video into a movable window over other apps. It is useful when you want to keep watching, but the video remains on screen; it is not the same as audio continuing with the display off. YouTube says ordinary non-music videos and Shorts can use PiP for all users, while music content—including official music videos and Art Tracks—requires Premium. - On the Samsung device, open Settings → Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-picture. Turn on Allow picture-in-picture. Depending on Android and One UI, this control may be under advanced or special-access settings.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback and turn on Picture-in-picture.
- Start a supported video and leave YouTube. The video should shrink into a floating window that you can drag around or dismiss.
If you dismiss the PiP window, Premium members can continue into background-play mode. Without PiP, check both the Android permission and YouTube setting, and consider whether the content is music-restricted. Samsung’s One UI and Android version can change the wording or placement of these controls.

Try Samsung Internet’s Background play feature
Samsung documents a browser setting that can let supported websites continue audio after you leave Samsung Internet. To enable it, touch and hold the three-line Menu button in Samsung Internet, tap Useful features → Background play, then choose On or Only on headphones or external speakers. Open YouTube in the browser, start a video, and press Home or open another app. If playback continues, use the notification or lock-screen media controls to manage it. Samsung says the browser may close while audio continues and that you can return using the Samsung Internet live notification. Its instructions are at Samsung’s Background play troubleshooting page.
This is a Samsung Internet feature, not a guarantee that YouTube content will play in the background. Samsung warns that some websites do not support the feature and notes that YouTube may restrict browser playback under Google policies.

Why the browser workaround may stop working
In January 2026, Android Authority reported a Google confirmation that browser-based background playback for non-Premium users had been restricted. The report does not establish identical behavior for every account, browser version, region, rollout, or type of content. Samsung Internet’s setting may still work in some circumstances, but it should not be treated as a reliable replacement for Premium. A difference between two Galaxy devices may reflect software, account, content, or rollout differences rather than a hardware fault.
Fix playback that stops
Work through these checks in order. Menu names may differ by Android, One UI, YouTube, and Samsung Internet versions.

- Identify the method and content. A free account in the official app should not be expected to provide Premium background playback. Test with a regular long-form video rather than a Short or music-restricted video.
- Check the account and entitlement. For the official app, confirm that YouTube is signed in to the Google account with Premium. If its entitlement appears stale, sign out and back in.
- Check the relevant setting. For Premium playback, open YouTube Settings → Background & downloads → Background play. For PiP, check both Android’s YouTube app permission and YouTube’s Settings → Playback option. For browser playback, recheck Samsung Internet Menu → Useful features → Background play.
- Check the audio-output condition. If background playback is limited to headphones or external speakers, connect one and test again.
- Update the apps. Update YouTube through Google Play and Samsung Internet through the Galaxy Store. Samsung’s troubleshooting page refers to Samsung Internet version 29.0.4 or higher; that is the threshold named on that page, not a universal requirement for every Galaxy model or later release.
- Restart the device and test the connection. Try Wi-Fi and mobile data, then check whether the media notification is paused or has disappeared.
- Clear cache only if needed. Avoid clearing app data unless you accept that it can reset app settings and remove downloads.
If the official app still stops after these checks, test whether the video is a Short and whether the signed-in account has Premium. If Samsung Internet stops, its setting cannot override YouTube’s restrictions; use the official app with Premium when screen-off playback is essential.

A dedicated music service may be a better fit if your main goal is listening with the screen off, managing playlists, or downloading music for offline listening. YouTube Music is included among the apps in which YouTube describes Premium background playback where available. Spotify is another option for music and playlists, but it does not replace YouTube’s full mix of creator uploads, lectures, livestreams, and niche videos. No service should be assumed to include every YouTube upload, remix, or live performance.

For a listener who wants YouTube-only videos and reliable screen-off playback, Premium directly addresses that need. For occasional multitasking, try eligible PiP first. Avoid relying on modified YouTube apps or unofficial APKs as routine solutions: their security, account compatibility, availability, and update status are not established here.
