Netflix’s current official computer-app instructions do not provide a native macOS desktop app. On a Mac running macOS Sonoma 14 or later, the closest built-in solution is Safari’s Add to Dock feature: it saves Netflix as an app-like web app with its own Dock icon and window. It still streams from Netflix.com and does not add native offline downloads.
Does Netflix have an official Mac desktop app?
As of August 18, 2026, Netflix’s computer-app guidance lists an app for Windows 10 or later through the Microsoft Store and for Chromebooks through Google Play. For Mac users, Netflix directs viewing through Netflix.com in a supported browser. See Netflix’s computer-app instructions.
That means a Mac App Store download is not the official route described by Netflix. The Safari web app is a shortcut and separate browser window, not a native Netflix application built specifically for macOS.
How to put Netflix on your Mac Dock
Before you start
- Use a Mac running macOS Sonoma 14 or later.
- Use Safari.
- Have an authorized Netflix account and an internet connection.
- Meet Netflix’s current Mac and browser requirements.
Create the web app
- Open Safari and go to https://www.netflix.com.
- Click Sign In and authenticate.
- In the macOS menu bar, choose File > Add to Dock. You can also select Safari’s Share button, then Add to Dock.
- Enter Netflix as the application name.
- Click Add.
- Select the new Netflix icon in the Dock to launch it.
Apple saves the web app in your home-folder Applications directory. You can also open it with Spotlight. It launches in a separate window with a simplified toolbar. Apple documents this workflow at Safari web apps and Add to Dock.

What this Netflix web app can—and cannot—do
- It can: provide a Dock icon, a standalone-looking window, and quick access through Spotlight or your Applications folder.
- It cannot: become a native macOS Netflix client, bypass Netflix’s website, or guarantee offline viewing.
- It remains dependent on: Netflix’s account service, internet connection, Safari’s playback technology, and supported macOS and browser versions.
Safari web apps use separate history, cookies, website data, and settings from ordinary Safari browsing. Consequently, a login made in Safari may not automatically be available in the new Netflix window; sign in again if prompted.
If “Add to Dock” is missing
- Check Apple menu > About This Mac and confirm that macOS is Sonoma 14 or newer.
- Make sure the page is open in Safari, not Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.
- Let Netflix finish loading, then check both File > Add to Dock and Share > Add to Dock.
- Install available macOS and Safari updates.
On Ventura, Monterey, and other older supported systems, use Netflix directly in Safari. You can drag the site icon or URL from Safari’s address bar to the desktop when supported, save a bookmark, or drag a bookmark to the Dock’s right-side document area. These options create browser shortcuts, not the independent Sonoma web-app container.
Netflix’s Mac requirements and browser limits
Netflix’s requirements page, which can change over time, currently lists macOS 10.15.5 or later. Safari 14 or later is required for general Mac playback, while Netflix live events require Safari 15 or later. Safari on Mac is listed at up to Ultra HD/2160p; macOS 11 or later is required for Ultra HD, along with Netflix’s other plan, title, hardware, display, connection, and content-protection requirements.

Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Opera?
Safari is the practical choice for the Dock web-app workflow and has the highest resolution ceiling in Netflix’s current Mac table. Chrome and Firefox can be useful alternatives if Safari playback fails, while Edge and Opera are also supported. Browser minimums and playback limits can change, so update the browser and check Netflix’s current requirements rather than treating one browser as universally best.

The web app keeps asking you to sign in
- Sign in inside the Netflix web-app window itself.
- Test Netflix.com directly in Safari.
- Temporarily disable content blockers or privacy extensions.
- If necessary, clear Netflix website data, restart Safari, and sign in again.
Netflix will not play
- Confirm that macOS 10.15.5 or later and a supported browser are installed.
- Update macOS and the browser.
- Open Netflix directly in Safari to determine whether the problem is specific to the web app.
- Sign out and back in, then restart Safari and the Mac.
- Try another supported browser.
- Check Netflix’s help or service-status information if playback fails across browsers and devices.
Video quality is below expectations
A browser ceiling does not ensure that a title plays at that resolution. Check your Netflix plan, title availability, Mac and display capabilities, external-display protection requirements, browser version, and network performance. Safari’s listed Ultra HD capability does not by itself guarantee 4K.

Can you download Netflix shows on a Mac?
Do not treat the Safari web app as an offline-download solution. Netflix’s current computer-app instructions direct Mac users to browser streaming and do not provide a macOS application download route. Adding Netflix to the Dock changes how you launch the website; it does not add native download functionality. For downloads, consult Netflix’s current device-specific guidance and use a platform it explicitly supports.
Rename, customize, or remove the web app
Change its settings
- Open the Netflix web app.
- Click the app name in the macOS menu bar and choose Settings.
- In General, change the application name, URL, icon, navigation controls, or title-bar color.
Delete it
- Open Finder and choose Go > Home.
- Open your home-folder Applications directory.
- Drag the Netflix web app to the Trash.
Deleting the web app does not cancel a Netflix membership.

If your Mac has Sonoma 14 or later, Safari’s File > Add to Dock creates the cleanest Netflix desktop experience without installing extra software. On older supported macOS versions, use a Safari bookmark or browser shortcut. In either case, use Netflix.com and official Apple or Netflix instructions, and avoid unofficial “Netflix for Mac” installers and wrappers that are unnecessary for this setup.
