To embed a YouTube live stream, open its YouTube watch page, select Share > Embed, copy the iframe code, and paste it into your website’s HTML or embed-code field. Publish the page and test it in a regular browser. The stream player and live chat are separate embeds, and some videos cannot play on third-party sites.
Embed the live stream player
- Open the stream’s YouTube watch page. Use the page for the live stream you want visitors to watch.
- Select Share > Embed. Copy the iframe HTML YouTube provides. Use YouTube’s generated code for the actual stream rather than substituting a guessed video ID. YouTube’s embed instructions describe this workflow for videos and playlists.
- Paste the code into your website. Use the platform’s HTML, custom-code, or embed-code area, then publish the page. The exact field name depends on your website platform.
- Check the published page. Test it in a normal browser context and confirm the player fits the page layout. YouTube’s embedded player is intended to run within an enclosing page or context.
The code has this general shape; use the iframe YouTube generates for your stream:

Choose standard or Privacy Enhanced Mode
If you want to use YouTube Privacy Enhanced Mode for a website embed, change the embed URL host from www.youtube.com to www.youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube says this prevents views of embedded content from influencing the viewer’s YouTube browsing experience; ads served in this mode are non-personalized. Privacy Enhanced Mode does not remove other obligations: sites or apps directed to children still need to self-designate as required by YouTube.
Add live chat as a separate embed
The embedded video player does not include Live Chat. YouTube makes Live Chat available on watch pages, not within embedded players. To show chat on your site, add a separate iframe using this URL pattern:

https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=VIDEO_ID&embed_domain=www.example.comReplace VIDEO_ID with the stream’s video ID and www.example.com with the domain of the page containing the chat. The embed_domain value must match that site domain or chat will not open. YouTube says embedded chat is unavailable on mobile web. Read its live chat embedding instructions before adding it.
Check these limits before troubleshooting
- Embedding may be disabled for the video. The video owner can manage its embedding option in YouTube Studio.
- Age restrictions can block playback. YouTube says age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites. If playback is unavailable there, link visitors to the YouTube watch page instead.
- The player needs a valid page context. Missing HTTP Referer information can trigger blocked playback and error 153. Keep the player inside a normal web page and check that the page and its setup provide Referer information.
- Your platform or network may block the embed. Confirm the publishing platform permits iframe or HTML embeds and that network rules allow YouTube; YouTube tells network administrators to allowlist youtube.com.

Fix common embed problems
- The player is blank or unavailable: check that embedding is enabled for the video, then check for an age restriction. Test the page in a normal browser context and confirm requests include HTTP Referer information.
- You see error 153: YouTube identifies missing Referer information as a possible cause. Make sure the player is embedded in a normal page context and review whether your site or security settings suppress that information.
- The video works on YouTube but not on your website: the video may be restricted from third-party playback, or your publishing platform or network may block iframe content or YouTube requests. Try the watch-page link as an alternative for affected visitors.
- The player works but chat does not: use the separate chat iframe and check that
embed_domainmatches the page’s domain. Chat embedding is not available on mobile web. - The embed option or code area is missing: confirm the video allows embedding and that your website platform accepts custom HTML or iframe embeds. The location and availability of that field depend on the platform.
If you still need to create the stream
Embedding displays a YouTube stream on your website; it does not create the broadcast. If you also need to start a live stream, YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its Help page also says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements for details.
