To embed YouTube Live Chat on your website during a livestream, add an iframe that points to YouTube’s live-chat URL. Include the stream’s video ID and the hostname of the webpage containing the iframe; that hostname must match the embed_domain value. YouTube says this chat embed is not available on mobile web.
Embed YouTube Live Chat with an iframe
You need the live stream’s video ID and the hostname of the page where the chat will appear. The hostname is the domain portion of the page address, without a path.
- Get the stream’s video ID. Open its YouTube watch-page URL. In
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12345, the video ID is12345. - Find the page hostname. For a page at
www.example.com/youtube_chat, the hostname iswww.example.com. Do not include/youtube_chat. - Build the live-chat URL. Use YouTube’s documented pattern, replacing the example ID and hostname with your own:
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=12345&embed_domain=www.example.com - Set the URL as the iframe source. For example, the following illustrative HTML uses the same example values; replace them before publishing:
<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=12345&embed_domain=www.example.com"></iframe>
If the hostname in embed_domain differs from the hostname of the page containing the iframe, YouTube says the embedded chat will not open. Use the actual host visitors reach, including a www prefix if that is part of the site address.
Know what the chat iframe does—and does not do
It is separate from the video player embed
Embedding a YouTube video player does not automatically add Live Chat. YouTube distinguishes chat on a video’s watch page from an embedded video player: its live-stream guidance says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not on embedded players. Add the chat iframe separately if you want chat alongside an embedded video on your site.

It is for an active live event
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says a live chat is available while its live event is active and is no longer available for that event after it ends. The documented iframe pattern is for a live stream; it does not establish that the same embed works for an ordinary video or a replay.
Mobile web is not supported for this embed
YouTube Help says embedding Live Chat is not available on mobile web. Do not assume that the chat iframe will work for visitors viewing your webpage in a mobile browser.

Use the API only if you need custom message display
If you want to retrieve chat messages for a custom application or presentation rather than show YouTube’s chat interface, YouTube documents the Live Streaming API. The broadcast’s snippet.liveChatId provides the chat ID used by the message methods.
liveChatMessages.listretrieves messages. Its results include a polling interval and page token, which an application must handle when requesting subsequent results.liveChatMessages.streamListprovides a server-streaming connection for lower-latency message delivery. YouTube’s API documentation recommends it instead of repeatedly polling withlist.
This is an application-development route, not a ready-made iframe. It requires software that makes and manages API requests, and the chat’s availability still follows the active-live-event lifecycle. For simply displaying YouTube’s chat interface, the iframe requires less custom application work.
