Make a YouTube Short by recording in the YouTube mobile app or uploading a square or vertical video up to three minutes long. Preview and edit it, add a title and audience settings, then upload. Use audio you have permission to use, or choose eligible music through YouTube’s Shorts tools.
Choose how to make your Short
| Method | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Record in the Shorts camera | Filming and making basic edits in the YouTube app | Whether the in-app tools provide the edits you want |
| Upload a finished video | Using existing footage or editing on a phone or computer | Square or vertical framing, a maximum duration of three minutes, and audio rights |
| Edit an existing upload into a Short | Taking a short excerpt from your own eligible public video | The source video must meet YouTube’s eligibility conditions; the excerpt can be up to 60 seconds |
YouTube’s help guidance reviewed October 3, 2026 describes Shorts creation on a smartphone and uploads through the mobile app or YouTube Studio on desktop. Exact labels can vary by device or product update. YouTube’s Shorts creation guide
Record and publish in the YouTube app
- Open the Shorts camera: Sign in to the YouTube app, tap Create, then Short.
- Record your footage: Hold or tap Capture to begin and use it again to stop. Record multiple segments if useful, and adjust the duration in the camera.
- Review and edit: Review the clips and use available tools such as music, filters, effects, undo or redo. You can save a draft if you are not ready to publish.
- Preview the Short: Tap Done. Add available touches such as sounds, text-to-speech or other effects, then preview the result.
- Set video details: Tap Next, enter a title (up to 100 characters), set privacy, and choose whether the video is made for kids. Check the privacy selection rather than relying on the default: creators aged 13–17 default to private, while those 18 or older default to public.
- Publish or save: Tap Upload Short to publish, or save it as a draft.
YouTube’s mobile guidance lists a maximum upload resolution of 1080p. See YouTube’s Shorts camera instructions
Upload a video you already made
From a phone
- Choose a square or vertical video saved on your phone in the YouTube app’s upload flow.
- Trim or edit it with the available tools, then add the video details, privacy and audience selection before uploading.
YouTube’s mobile upload guidance describes square or vertical videos and a maximum duration of three minutes. Audio selected from the library in this upload context is limited to 15-second clips; do not assume that limit applies to every track or Shorts workflow. Check the allowance shown for the audio you select. YouTube’s Android upload instructions

From a computer

Use music and footage you have rights to
Do not assume you can use a popular song or someone else’s video just because it is available online. YouTube says copyrighted material in an upload must be approved for your use. Otherwise, it may receive a Content ID claim; a valid copyright takedown can remove the video and may result in a copyright strike.

Turn part of your own video into a Short
- Open the watch page for an eligible public video that you uploaded.
- Tap Remix, then Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds, add creative touches, and upload. The resulting Short links back to the source video.

What happens to Shorts views in analytics?
Since March 31, 2025, a Shorts view counts when a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retains the earlier metric as Engaged views; its guidance says Engaged Shorts views continue to be used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing. The two metrics are not interchangeable. YouTube’s explanation of the Shorts view-count change
Troubleshoot common creation problems
- Your video does not fit the upload requirements: Check that it is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes.
- You cannot find the music duration you expected: The allowance depends on the track and workflow. Check the duration shown for the selected audio in the app.
- A copyright claim appears: Confirm that you have permission for the copyrighted material, or replace it with audio you can use, such as eligible Shorts audio or royalty-free YouTube Audio Library music.
- “Edit into a Short” is unavailable: Check that the source is your public video, is not unlisted or private, and has no third-party copyright claim. Check the Shorts sampling setting in YouTube Studio if the option remains missing.
- Your uploaded video is private when you expected it to be public: Review privacy before publishing; default privacy differs by age, and you can change it.
