For a live broadcast, use YouTube’s separate live-encoder settings: constant bitrate (CBR), a supported ingestion codec, and a two-second keyframe interval. The right settings depend first on whether you are uploading a finished file or sending a live feed.
Choose the right encoding path
Encoding a finished documentary for upload is different from encoding a live broadcast. Upload recommendations describe the file you submit; live recommendations describe the feed your encoder sends to YouTube. The bitrate tables below are YouTube recommendations, not mandatory minimums or guarantees of a particular playback quality.
- Finished video: follow the upload profile and bitrate tables.
- Live broadcast: use CBR, live bitrate guidance, and the recommended keyframe interval.
How to encode a finished video for upload
1. Keep the source’s shape and frame rate
Export at the frame rate at which the footage was recorded. YouTube’s upload guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” Deinterlace interlaced footage before uploading. Preserve the source’s aspect ratio rather than adding bars solely to force it into another shape. YouTube describes 16:9 as the standard computer-player ratio, while its player adapts to vertical and square videos.
2. Set the video format and codec
A practical upload profile is an MP4 container with H.264 video, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and variable bitrate (VBR). YouTube’s recommended H.264 profile is High Profile, with CABAC, two consecutive B frames, and a closed GOP whose length is half the frame rate. These are recommended settings, not a list of requirements whose absence automatically causes rejection.

3. Choose an upload bitrate
Select a target using the resolution and frame-rate band in YouTube’s table. The figures are YouTube recommendations current on the page accessed in 2026; the page’s publication date is not stated. YouTube does not specify a universal minimum bitrate, because the appropriate value depends in part on the codec.
| SDR resolution | 24, 25, or 30 fps | 48, 50, or 60 fps |
| 8K | 80–160 Mbps | 120–240 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
| 1440p (2K) | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 2.5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p | 1 Mbps | 1.5 Mbps |
For HDR uploads, YouTube’s recommendations accessed in 2026 are:
| HDR resolution | 24, 25, or 30 fps | 48, 50, or 60 fps |
| 8K | 100–200 Mbps | 150–300 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 44–56 Mbps | 66–85 Mbps |
| 1440p (2K) | 20 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1080p | 10 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 720p | 6.5 Mbps | 9.5 Mbps |
| 480p | Not supported | Not supported |
| 360p | Not supported | Not supported |
4. Set audio deliberately
YouTube’s upload guidance lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at a 48 kHz sample rate. Its recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo, and 512 kbps for 5.1. Eclipsa Audio is listed at 128 kbps per channel. Check that the export uses the channel layout your finished mix actually contains.

5. Check color and HDR metadata
For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. Keep the transfer characteristics, color primaries, and matrix consistent with how the video was mastered; YouTube warns against using an RGB color matrix and says unsupported color spaces may be converted to BT.709.
HDR needs correctly authored metadata. YouTube’s HDR guidance lists MOV, MP4, and MKV containers, and recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1, or HEVC/H.265 for efficient 10-bit HDR encoding. It also lists ProRes 422, ProRes 4444, DNxHR HQX, and 10-bit H.264 as options that may require much higher bitrates and longer processing. HDR metadata should identify the correct PQ or HLG transfer function, Rec. 2020 color primaries, and Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix.
What bitrate should you use for a YouTube live stream?
For a live stream, use YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than the upload table. YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is recommended, and YouTube says it encrypts data to and through its servers. Supported RTMP/RTMPS ingestion codecs include H.264, HEVC, and AV1.

Selected H.264 live bitrate recommendations from YouTube’s table, accessed in 2026, are:
| Live output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 4K30 | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K60 | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are ingestion recommendations, not measured guarantees. For resolutions or frame rates not shown here, use YouTube’s full live settings table for the chosen codec and output. Test the stream before the event so you can catch encoder, connection, or keyframe problems before going live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor YouTube Live HDR, the live settings guidance identifies H.265/HEVC as the HDR codec; AV1 is not supported for HDR. HDR live streaming also requires a compatible HDR source and encoder.

Where to set the encoding options
In a video editor
Use the export panel in the editor you already use. In Adobe Premiere’s export controls, the relevant options include format, frame size, frame rate, codec profile and level, encoding performance, and export color space. Premiere uses hardware encoding by default for H.264 and HEVC when the computer supports the requested settings; otherwise it switches to software encoding. The exact controls and their labels can vary with the app version.
With FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a command-line alternative for converting or re-encoding video; its documentation includes an H.264-to-MP4 example. A safe command depends on the source’s video and audio streams, color handling, and intended output, so inspect those before choosing parameters rather than copying a generic command that may alter frame rate, audio, or color metadata.

- The file looks soft or blocky: confirm that the export resolution and bitrate suit the source and frame-rate band. A low-quality source cannot be made detailed simply by exporting at a higher resolution.
- Motion looks uneven: check that the export frame rate matches the recorded footage and that interlaced material was deinterlaced.
- Bars or framing look wrong: verify the source aspect ratio and avoid adding bars just to force a different shape.
- Colors look wrong: check SDR BT.709 settings or, for HDR, the transfer function, primaries, matrix, and metadata against the mastered source.
- HD or 4K playback is not available immediately: YouTube says higher resolutions can take several hours to process. Available playback quality can also vary by device and browser.
- A live stream buffers or is rejected: check that you are using live rather than upload settings, that the bitrate suits the codec and output, and that the live encoder uses CBR and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s recommendation.
Copyright and monetization considerations
Encoding settings do not grant rights to the footage, music, archival material, or other content in a documentary. Confirm you have the necessary rights or permissions before uploading or broadcasting. YouTube’s technical encoding guidance does not determine whether a channel or video qualifies for monetization; that is a separate policy question. Review the relevant YouTube rules for your content and channel before relying on a stream or upload as a monetized format.
