Best Microphones for YouTube Live Streaming: USB vs. XLR

For a straightforward computer livestream, the Shure MV7 offers USB connection with an XLR path available. An XLR microphone such as the SM7B needs an audio interface to connect to a computer.

For a simple computer-based YouTube livestream, the Shure MV7 is a practical USB-first choice: it connects directly to a computer and also has a passive XLR output if you later add an audio interface. If you already have an interface and want an XLR microphone, the Shure SM7B is another option—but it needs that interface to connect to a computer. Neither is established here as the best-sounding microphone in a controlled comparison; choose by connection, placement, and setup needs.

What is the best microphone for YouTube live streaming?

The Shure MV7 is the clearest fit for a streamer who wants a direct computer connection without giving up the option of XLR later. Shure describes it as a USB dynamic microphone intended for close-mic vocal intelligibility, and lists it on its live-streaming microphone page. Its USB and passive XLR outputs support two different setup paths.

The Shure SM7B is a more involved XLR-focused choice. Shure describes it as a cardioid dynamic vocal microphone and recommends close, on-axis speech. To connect an XLR microphone to a computer for a livestream, Shure’s livestream guide says you need a USB audio interface. The interface is part of the setup, not an optional cable substitute.

These are product-fit recommendations, not the result of a listening test. The available product information does not establish a universal sound-quality winner, price ranking, or best microphone for every room.

USB or XLR: which streaming setup should you choose?

Shure MV7 over XLR Connect the microphone to a USB audio interface, then connect the interface to the computer. Interface input and cable type, XLR cable, stand or boom compatibility, and any required mount adapter. A streamer who already owns an interface or wants to use one.
Shure SM7B over XLR Connect the microphone to a USB audio interface, then connect the interface to the computer. Interface input, XLR cable, mounting arrangement, and comfortable close/on-axis positioning. A creator prepared for an XLR microphone and the extra hardware and setup.

Shure’s MV7 guide states that compatible mobile use depends on applicable cables, which are not provided. Check current device and cable compatibility before planning a phone-based setup.

How should you position a microphone for a livestream?

Aim the front of the microphone toward you

The MV7 and SM7B are cardioid microphones. Shure explains that cardioid pickup favors sound from the front and rejects sound from other directions, reducing pickup from off-axis sources. Point the microphone’s front toward your speaking position; turning it away can make your voice less prominent while nearby sound remains audible.

Move it close, then listen

Close placement can make the voice more prominent relative to room sound, and Shure describes the MV7 for close-mic use. There is no single distance established as right for every speaker or setup. Move it close enough to speak naturally, then listen back and adjust. Directional microphones can gain bass as they get closer to the sound source—the proximity effect—so if the voice becomes too bass-heavy, increase the distance and check again.

Do not expect a microphone to treat the room

Cardioid pickup and close placement can help reduce unwanted pickup, but they do not guarantee that room noise, reflections, or other sounds will disappear. Position the mic deliberately and assess the sound in your actual room rather than treating its pickup pattern as a substitute for room treatment.

What cables, stand, and other equipment do you need?

  • For USB: a compatible USB connection to the computer. Shure says the MV7 works with Windows and Mac computers without a driver.
  • For XLR: an XLR cable and a USB audio interface with a suitable microphone input, connected to the computer. Shure’s livestream guide identifies the interface as necessary for an XLR mic-to-computer connection.
  • For mounting: the MV7 has a 5/8-inch-27 threaded mount. Some stands may need an adapter; confirm the thread and included hardware for the stand you intend to use. The available information does not establish that a particular stand is compatible or included.
  • For monitoring: the MV7 has headphone monitoring. Headphones can help you check the live audio path, but the cited specifications do not establish a particular monitoring setup as required.
  • For phone use: check the applicable phone, operating-system, and cable compatibility before buying. Shure notes that the required mobile cables are not provided.

Set up and check your audio before going live

  1. Choose the connection path. For an MV7 computer setup, connect by USB. For an XLR microphone, connect it to a USB audio interface, then connect the interface to the computer.
  2. Confirm the computer sees the intended input. Select the microphone or interface as the audio input in your streaming software, and check that the software’s meter responds when you speak. Menu labels vary by software, so use its audio-input settings rather than assuming a universal UI path.
  3. Mount and aim the mic. Verify the mount thread or adapter, place the mic in a comfortable close position, and point its front toward you.
  4. Listen to a test recording or private check. Assess voice level, background pickup, and bass balance. If the voice sounds too bass-heavy, move the mic slightly farther away; if room sound dominates, try closer placement and a quieter position.
  5. Check the complete livestream path. Confirm audio reaches the stream, not only local monitoring. If possible, have a second device or listener check the stream before a public broadcast.

Common microphone problems and fixes

  • No audio reaches the stream: check that the computer recognizes the USB microphone or interface, then select that device as the input in the streaming software. Confirm its input meter moves while speaking.
  • An XLR microphone is not detected by the computer: an XLR mic does not connect directly as a USB device. Connect it to a USB audio interface and connect that interface to the computer.
  • Your voice sounds distant or room noise is prominent: point the cardioid front toward you and try a closer position. Directional pickup helps reject sound from other directions, but cannot guarantee room noise removal.
  • Your voice sounds unusually bass-heavy: move the microphone farther away in small increments and listen again; close positioning can increase bass through proximity effect.
  • The mic will not attach securely: check the mounting thread and whether the stand needs an adapter. For the MV7, Shure specifies a 5/8-inch-27 threaded mount.
  • A phone connection does not work: verify that the specific phone and cable combination is compatible. The applicable mobile cables are not supplied with the MV7.

Microphone choice does not keep a 24/7 stream running

A microphone is for capturing live voice; it does not keep a YouTube channel broadcasting prerecorded video around the clock. If your separate goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the looping stream in the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not live camera input. Start the free day.
