Premium’s download button is for offline playback of music Spotify already offers, not for exporting MP3 or WAV files. If you legally own an unreleased recording—or have permission to use it—you can play it in Spotify with Local Files. The audio remains on your device and is not uploaded, published, or made searchable.
What “unreleased” means
The right answer depends on what you mean by unreleased:
- Not yet officially released: The recording is finished or privately circulated but is not in Spotify’s catalog.
- A leak: The file was distributed without authorization. Availability online does not establish permission to copy or possess it.
- A private file: An artist, producer, label, or friend supplied it directly, with whatever permission applies.
- Released elsewhere: The song may be legitimately downloadable from an authorized source, but Spotify cannot retrieve it if Spotify does not carry it.
- Removed from Spotify: A track that was once available may disappear when rights or catalog availability change. A previous Spotify download is not permanent ownership.
- Your own recording: You have the file and want Spotify’s playlists and playback interface.
These categories have different technical and legal consequences. “Not on Spotify” does not automatically mean “free to download.”
Can Spotify download a song that is not in its catalog?
No. Spotify’s documented offline workflow covers available albums, playlists, music and podcasts inside the service; it does not provide a way to search for or fetch an arbitrary external audio file. See Spotify’s offline-listening instructions.

A Spotify download is best understood as an offline playback entitlement inside the Spotify app, not a file-export feature. Spotify’s Premium page describes offline access to supported catalog content and says you must reconnect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active: Spotify Premium offline downloads.
That means Premium does not add unreleased tracks to Spotify, provide a private upload function, or turn an in-app download into a transferable MP3 or WAV.
Choose the correct method

The legitimate workaround: Spotify Local Files
Local Files plays audio that is legally stored on your computer or mobile device. Spotify documents the feature for desktop, iOS and Android: Spotify Local Files support. It does not upload the recording to Spotify, create a catalog entry, or give other users access.

Desktop (Windows or Mac)
- Save the authorized audio file in a folder on your computer.
- Open Spotify and select your profile picture.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Scroll to Library and turn on Show Local Files.
- Under Show songs from, enable the relevant folder, or choose Add a source to select another folder.
- Open Your Library, then Local Files.
- Play the track or add it to a playlist.
Spotify may change labels or placement in a later app version, but the current documented path is Settings and privacy → Library → Show Local Files.
iPhone or iPad
- Put the legally obtained file where the iOS Files app and Spotify can access it. Spotify’s iOS guidance includes placing it in the Spotify folder under On My iPhone.
- In Spotify, tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings and privacy, then Apps and devices.
- Turn on Local audio files.
- Open Your Library and select Local Files.
The iOS-specific folder guidance is available from Spotify’s UK Local Files instructions; regional support pages can use different wording.
Android
- Copy the authorized audio file onto the Android device using a file-transfer method or file-management app.
- Tap your profile picture in Spotify.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Apps and devices.
- Turn on Local audio files.
- Open Your Library and find the recording under Local Files.
Android may require a separate method or app to move the file onto the device, as Spotify notes in its Local Files help page.

Add it to a playlist without uploading it
From Local Files, add the track to a playlist just as you would add other Spotify items. The playlist stores a reference to the local file; it does not contain a cloud copy. Other people cannot search for the song, and anyone using another device must transfer the underlying file separately and enable Local Files there. Moving or renaming the file can break the playlist reference.
Why Premium downloads are not MP3 exports
Spotify’s U.S. Premium information describes offline listening for supported catalog content, with up to 10,000 songs per device across up to five devices under the applicable service conditions: Premium offline-download details. Spotify also requires a connection at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. The service’s U.S. terms describe Spotify content as licensed rather than sold or transferred: Spotify U.S. Terms of Use.

Why downloaders, rippers and leaks are not a solution
Do not use websites or software advertised as Spotify downloaders, stream rippers, browser capture extensions, modified clients, cache extractors or DRM-circumvention tools. Besides copyright and permission problems, such services can expose account credentials, install malware or produce files of uncertain origin. Spotify’s User Guidelines prohibit importing or copying local files without the legal right to do so and prohibit transferring cached Spotify content between devices.
The same distinction applies to a leak. A file circulating on social media or a forum may still be an unauthorized copy. Safer choices are to wait for release, use an artist-approved preview, buy an authorized release if it appears elsewhere, or ask the rights holder for permission.
Troubleshooting ordinary Spotify downloads
If the track is in Spotify’s catalog but will not save for offline listening, follow Spotify’s documented checks:

- Confirm that your account has the required Premium plan for music downloads.
- Stay online while the initial download completes.
- Keep at least 1 GB of free storage, which Spotify recommends for troubleshooting.
- Check the limit of up to five devices and the applicable song limit.
- Disable battery-saving or cache-cleaning tools that may remove app data.
- Restart Spotify and try again.
- Reconnect at least once every 30 days to retain offline access.
- If you reinstall Spotify, expect to download the music and podcasts again.

Troubleshooting Local Files
- Verify that Show Local Files (desktop) or Local audio files (mobile) is enabled.
- Confirm the audio is actually stored on the device and that Spotify has the needed file or storage permission.
- On iPhone, check the Spotify folder under On My iPhone. Spotify notes that the folder can disappear if its Help file is deleted; restarting the app can restore it.
- Remove the track from any playlist, restart Spotify, and add it again.
- Update Spotify and restart the device.
- Use a clean reinstall only as a final step, because reinstalling removes Spotify downloads and they must be downloaded again.
A local track can work on one device and fail on another because the file exists only on the first device, Local Files is disabled on the second, permissions differ, the path or filename changed, or the playlist contains only a local-file reference. Transfer the audio separately; Spotify does not promise to synchronize the underlying file between devices. More platform guidance is in Spotify’s Local Files documentation.
If you are the artist or producer
Local Files is suitable for personal testing and playback, not private Spotify hosting or music distribution. Spotify for Creators’ terms say the service is not intended as a general music-distribution tool and require content to be cleared for distribution on Spotify: Spotify for Creators Terms.
For controlled listening, send approved files through an authorized private-delivery service. For a public release, use the normal distributor or label workflow and obtain the necessary rights and clearances. Local Files cannot create a private Spotify catalog entry.

You cannot download an unreleased song from Spotify when it is absent from Spotify’s catalog. If you legally possess the recording, enable Local Files and play it from your own device. If it is a leak, do not treat technical availability as permission: wait for an authorized release or obtain consent from the rights holder.
