Sandokan—also marketed as Sandokan: The Pirate Prince—is the series behind the “easy-to-binge pirate epic” headline. The Italian adventure drama stars Can Yaman as a Malaysian pirate resisting British colonial forces in 19th-century Southeast Asia. Its first season has eight episodes, all released together on Netflix in the United States on January 19, 2026. It is a compact, romantic swashbuckler; the “sleeper hit” label is supportable only for a specific early chart window, not as a claim of lasting dominance.
Why Sandokan is being called a sleeper hit
During Netflix’s global Top 10 reporting week of January 19–25, 2026, Sandokan recorded 3.5 million views and 27 million hours viewed, ranking seventh among global television titles in that report. Contemporary coverage also described it as No. 3 on Netflix, but that appears to reflect a different chart, territory or measurement period. Those figures show an unexpectedly strong early streaming run—not proof that it became Netflix’s biggest show or a permanent worldwide phenomenon. The underlying coverage is indexed at IMDb’s Sandokan news page.

“Sleeper hit” is therefore an editorial description of early, quieter-than-expected success. Netflix rankings change by week and territory, and the January figures should not be presented as the series’ current 2026 position.
What is Sandokan about?
Sandokan is a pirate captain operating around Mompracem and the South China Sea. With his crew, he raids ships and challenges British power while trying to understand his own identity and origins. The plot also follows a romance involving an English-Italian aristocrat, creating a personal conflict across political and class lines.

- SANDOKAN, PIRATE OF MALAYSIA
- Product Type: PHYSICAL FILM
- Brand: Sinister Cinema
The result is a heightened adventure built from pirate raids, naval action, loyalty and brotherhood, anti-colonial resistance, and legend-like heroism. It is based on Emilio Salgari’s novels, not a true story. The series is a new adaptation and modern reworking of that literary tradition, which had also been brought to television in 1976; viewers do not need to know the earlier production to follow this one.
Is the whole season available to binge?
- Season 1: eight episodes.
- Original broadcast: Italy, December 2025.

Netflix licensing is territory-specific. Check the Netflix catalog in your country for the title, localized name, audio tracks and subtitles; availability can change. Cast and international identity
Can Yaman leads as Sandokan. The ensemble includes Alessandro Preziosi, Alanah Bloor, Ed Westwick, John Hannah and Owen Teale. Yaman’s major Turkish television profile and the British and European supporting cast reflect the production’s international positioning. Consult the title’s current official credits for character assignments beyond Sandokan.
Sandokan versus Black Sails
The comparison makes sense as a discovery shortcut—both feature pirate crews, ships, colonial conflict, shifting alliances and serialized adventure—but the viewing experience is substantially different.

Rank #3
- Factory sealed DVD
| Category | Sandokan | Black Sails |
|---|---|---|
| Tone | Romantic, classical and broadly accessible swashbuckling | Darker, adult and morally complex |
| Violence and sex | Adventure-focused and less extreme | Much more graphic and sexually explicit |
| Story tradition | Adaptation of Emilio Salgari’s novels, with a 1976 television lineage | A politically intricate prequel to Treasure Island |
| Historical approach | Heightened, mythic and romanticized | Gritty historical-fiction framework |
| Commitment | Eight episodes in the first season | A substantially longer multi-season drama |
Black Sails remains the closer match for viewers seeking brutality, adult politics and moral ambiguity. Sandokan is the better fit for heroic adventure, romance and a traditional serial-adventure feel. The shows are not interchangeable, and Sandokan is not a continuation of Black Sails. Background coverage of that series is collected at IMDb’s Black Sails news page.
Who should watch it?
- Choose it if you want a complete, eight-episode pirate story rather than a long commitment.
- Choose it if classic swashbuckling, romance and anti-imperial conflict appeal more than grim realism.
- Choose it if you enjoy international productions with dubbed or subtitled viewing options.
- Lower your expectations if you want a rigorous historical analysis, the bleakness of Black Sails, or prestige-drama depth across many seasons.
“Epic” describes the setting, scale and adventure ambition. It does not mean the series is as long, relentlessly dark or historically analytical as a prestige multi-season drama.

Has Season 2 been confirmed?
Trade and Netflix-watch coverage reported that Season 2 had been confirmed. No release date should be assumed from that report, and an official Netflix or production-company schedule would be needed before stating one.
The practical verdict
Start Sandokan if you want a short, fully available burst of romantic pirate adventure. The eight-episode drop makes it genuinely easy to binge, and the January 2026 Top 10 performance explains why “sleeper hit” entered the conversation. Treat that phrase as a time-bounded description of early chart success—not as evidence that the show replaced Black Sails, became Netflix’s biggest series, or achieved sustained cultural dominance.
