Formula 1 unveiled the film’s first-look teaser ahead of the 2024 British Grand Prix, introducing Hayes and rookie teammate Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) at the fictional APXGP team.
What the first teaser revealed
Formula 1 announced that the teaser would be unveiled on July 7, 2024, ahead of the British Grand Prix. Its corporate account said the first-look footage aired in Formula 1’s global feed before the race. The announcement presented the project as an Apple Original Film titled F1, rather than footage of a real driver’s return to competition. Formula 1’s teaser announcement and its report on the unveiling set out that timing.
Who Brad Pitt and Damson Idris play
Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula One driver who returns to the grid. Idris plays Joshua Pearce, a rookie, and the two are teammates at APXGP, a fictional team. The story’s comeback belongs to Hayes, not Pitt; phrases such as “big comeback” and “one last shot at saving the team” describe the film’s plot. Formula 1’s film announcement and Apple’s film page identify the characters and premise.
Why the production has a Formula One connection
Formula 1 says the film was made with the sport’s community, including teams, drivers, the FIA and race promoters. The official teaser description says filming took place during actual Grand Prix weekends. That establishes access to real race-weekend settings; it does not mean every scene or all the racing shown is documentary footage. Formula 1’s account of the teaser and Warner Bros.’ official teaser description describe the involvement and filming context.

Director, producers and release dates
Joseph Kosinski directed F1. Producers include Jerry Bruckheimer and partners working with Lewis Hamilton’s Dawn Apollo Films banner. Apple announced the North American theatrical date as June 27, 2025, and its release information gave June 25, 2025, for international markets. Those dates are in the past: the teaser was a 2024 announcement for a film that opened theatrically in 2025. See Apple TV Press’s release announcement and the official teaser listing for the credits and release details.
How the film performed and where to check viewing options
Apple’s current film page says F1 surpassed $630 million at the global box office. That is Apple’s currently reported figure; the page does not identify a separate accounting date. The same page presents the film in the Apple TV app, but viewing terms and availability can differ by country and change over time, so check the listing for your location rather than assuming a particular streaming or rental option.

In an interview reported by The Associated Press, Kosinski described the film as a story about an underdog team and Hayes getting another chance to win in Formula One: “It’s a story about a last place team, a group of underdogs, and Sonny Hayes in his later years having one more chance to do something he was never able to, which is win a race in F1.” The Associated Press report attributes the quote to Kosinski.
