Yes—Substack has a real TV app. Substack TV launched in beta on January 22, 2026, bringing video posts and livestreams to physical Apple TV devices and Google TV/Android TV devices. The app is free, but individual videos can still require the viewer’s existing free or paid subscription to a publication.
What Substack TV actually is
Substack TV is a big-screen extension of Substack’s publishing and subscription service, not a separate streaming catalog with one universal monthly fee. The launch announcement describes a For You feed, subscription-based browsing and publication video archives. New eligible videos from publications you follow can appear automatically after you sign in.
The launch was announced as a beta on January 22, 2026. Substack’s announcement is available at Substack’s launch post.
Which TVs and streaming devices support it?
| Platform | Status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Apple TV hardware | Officially supported | Install Substack from the Apple TV App Store. This means an Apple TV box, not merely an Apple TV+ app built into another television. |
| Google TV | Officially supported | Search for Substack in the television or streaming device’s Apps area. |
| Android TV | Supported where the app is available | Substack’s setup guide provides Android TV instructions; check the device’s own app store before relying on compatibility. |
| Roku | Not confirmed in the current official documentation | Do not buy a Roku expecting the native Substack TV app. |
| Amazon Fire TV | Not confirmed | No native support was identified in Substack’s current setup information. |
| Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, PlayStation and Xbox | Not confirmed | “Smart TV” branding alone does not establish support. |
Substack specifically distinguishes physical Apple TV hardware from the Apple TV+ application included on some smart TVs. A television with an Apple TV+ icon is not automatically compatible. The safest test is to search the device’s own app marketplace for Substack. Substack’s current device guidance is at its TV streaming support page.

How to install Substack TV
Apple TV
- Open the App Store from the Apple TV home screen.
- Search for Substack.
- Select the Substack app and choose Get.
- Choose Open, or launch it later from the Apple TV home screen.
The official Apple TV listing is available in Apple’s App Store.
Google TV or Android TV
- Open the TV home screen’s Apps area or search icon.
- Search for Substack.
- Select the app and download it.
- Choose Open, or find it later in the Apps section.
Google TV branding generally indicates the relevant Android TV environment, but menus and compatibility vary by manufacturer. Check the operating system in the television or streaming device’s system information and confirm that Substack appears in its app store.
How to sign in
Apple TV: QR-code sign-in
- Open Substack on the Apple TV and display the QR code.
- Scan the code with your phone.
- Verify that the code shown on the phone matches the code on the television.
- Select Sign in to TV.
Substack’s current Apple TV instructions do not support email login, so QR authentication is the required route there.
Google TV and Android TV: QR code or email
You can use the same QR-code process, or:
- Open Substack and select Sign in.
- Choose email login.
- Enter your account email details.
- Complete the sign-in flow shown on screen.
Use the Substack account that holds the publication subscription you want to watch. A phone signed into a different account is a common cause of apparently missing paid videos.

What you can watch
Video posts
The app surfaces native Substack video posts from publications you follow or subscribe to. Free and paid accounts can sign in, but a free account does not unlock a paid video simply because it is viewed on a television.
Livestreams
Creators and publications can make livestreams available through the TV experience, giving subscribers a larger-screen way to watch live programming.
For You, Subscriptions and publication archives
- For You: a carousel combining videos from your subscriptions and recommendations.
- Subscriptions: publications you subscribe to that have accessible video posts.
- Publication pages: an archive of that publication’s available videos.
Substack says new eligible videos automatically appear in For You or Subscriptions for signed-in viewers, although the TV player has limited functionality.
What the TV app does not yet replace
Substack’s launch announcement listed several features as planned rather than available at launch. Treat these as launch-era limitations unless a newer official update changes them:

- Audio posts and read-alouds were not part of the initial TV experience.
- Search and improved discovery were listed for future development.
- Free viewers were not initially given paid-content previews in the TV app.
- In-app upgrades to paid subscriptions were planned, rather than available at launch.
- Separate sections for multiple shows from one publication were planned.
The current support guidance also says unsubscribing must be handled on a computer or through the iOS or Android app, rather than relying on the television interface. Do not assume that casting, offline playback, universal search or subscription purchases are available unless Substack documents them for your version.
Is Substack TV free?
The TV app is free to download. Substack’s general app guidance explains that payment is normally required only for premium publications or content; see Substack’s pricing help page.
There is no universal “Substack TV” subscription. Each publication sets its own free or paid access, and the TV app inherits that account status. Installing the app does not grant access to every creator’s paid videos, and cancelling a publication subscription may require the web or mobile app.
What creators need to publish
Creators who already publish eligible Substack video do not need a second, TV-specific feed. Substack says those videos become available automatically to signed-in subscribers. The important distinction is format: the content must be published as a native Substack video post, not merely as a video embedded inside an ordinary text post.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy a device just for Substack?
Usually not. The app makes sense when you already own compatible hardware and follow creators who publish substantial video or livestream content. If you only want Substack, a phone, tablet or computer may deliver the same posts without a new purchase.
Apple TV
Apple’s U.S. store listed the Apple TV 4K at $199 for Wi‑Fi/64GB and $249 for Wi‑Fi plus Ethernet/128GB when these prices were checked; hardware prices can change. See Apple’s buying page. It is the clearest premium choice for Apple households, but it is expensive if Substack is the only reason to buy it, and its current Substack sign-in flow uses QR authentication.
Google TV and Android TV
This is the practical category to investigate if you already own compatible equipment or want a lower-cost big-screen route. Exact compatibility depends on the device and operating system, so verify that Substack appears in the app store before purchasing. No single current Google TV price is established here.

Roku and other platforms
Roku’s official player page lists mainstream devices and promotional prices, including figures such as $29.99 for an HD Streaming Stick and $39.99 for a 4K Streaming Stick Plus when checked: Roku’s player page. However, Substack’s documentation reviewed for this article does not confirm a native Roku app. The same caution applies to Fire TV, Samsung and LG smart-TV platforms.
Troubleshooting common problems
The app does not appear in the store
- Confirm that the device is physical Apple TV hardware or a supported Google TV/Android TV environment.
- Search the device’s own store for “Substack,” not for “Apple TV+.”
- Check the operating system and region settings.
- If the app is absent, use Substack on the web or a mobile device rather than assuming the device is supported.
The QR login fails
- Close and reopen Substack on the TV.
- Generate a fresh QR code.
- Check that the phone’s account is the one with the relevant subscription.
- Confirm the code on the phone matches the code on the television.
- On Google TV or Android TV, try email login instead.
Remember that Substack’s current guide does not offer email login on Apple TV.
A publication or video is missing
- The publication may not have native video posts.
- The video may be embedded in a text post rather than published as a Substack video post.
- Your account tier may not include the video.
- The app may need to refresh its subscription state.
- The item may be audio-only or a read-aloud, formats not included in the initial TV feature set.
Bottom line
Substack TV is real, free and useful for watching subscribed publications’ video posts and livestreams on Apple TV or Google TV/Android TV. It is not a universal Substack catalog, does not make paid videos free, and does not currently establish support for every smart-TV platform. Install it if you already own compatible hardware; buying an expensive streaming box solely for Substack is rarely justified.
