To add AI captions to a live stream, first choose where the captions should be generated and how viewers should receive them. For an eligible YouTube channel broadcasting in English at normal latency, YouTube’s built-in automatic captions are the simplest option. Other choices include sending YouTube a separate caption feed, embedding captions through a compatible encoder, or showing transcription as an on-screen text overlay. These methods differ in language support, setup, latency, and whether viewers can control the captions.

Choose how captions will reach viewers

“Captions” can mean different things in a live production. Closed captions are delivered separately from the picture and can be controlled in the viewer’s player. Embedded captions travel with the video signal in a supported caption format. An overlay is text rendered visibly on the picture, so viewers see it as part of the image rather than as a separate caption track.

Method Best fit What to check
YouTube automatic live captions An eligible English-language YouTube stream where normal latency is acceptable Channel eligibility, English as the video language, latency mode, and whether the option is available for this stream
YouTube external caption feed An event using compatible caption software or a captioning provider Signed caption ingestion URL, compatible delivery software, broadcast delay, and one feed per stream entry point
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions A production encoder able to carry captions in the video stream Encoder support and configuration for the selected caption format
OBS plugin such as LocalVocal A producer who wants to configure a plugin for transcription, text display, file output, or RTMP caption sending Current OBS compatibility, installation instructions, output route, and any translation requirements
Google Cloud Live Stream AI captions An operator delivering an HLS or DASH service Supported language for the service location and the trade-off between caption timing and media latency

For typical YouTube creators, check the native option first. Use an external feed or embedded captions if the built-in option is unavailable or does not meet the show’s language or latency needs. An overlay is a separate presentation choice: it puts words on the picture rather than providing a viewer-controlled caption track.

Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions

YouTube’s automatic live captions are not a channel-wide switch. Configure them for each live stream, and confirm the option is available before planning a broadcast around it. YouTube Help describes the feature as limited to eligible English channels and normal-latency streams; availability may not have reached every channel.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open the stream’s settings. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, open the settings for the individual stream and locate Closed captions.
  2. Choose automatic captions. Turn on Closed captions and select Automatic captions when that option is available.
  3. Set the video language to English. YouTube Help says automatic captions for live streams are available in English only. This is a caption-language limitation, not a guarantee that every accent or speaking style will be recognized correctly.
  4. Use normal latency. The native automatic-caption option requires normal latency; it is not the choice for a stream configured for low or ultra-low latency.
  5. Check the result during the broadcast. Listen for clear speech and watch for recognition errors. YouTube encourages creators to use professional captions first, so use a human or professional workflow when caption quality is critical.

If you do not see Automatic captions, do not assume a different menu path will enable it: eligibility, rollout, language, and latency can determine whether the control appears. Switch to a compatible caption feed or encoder workflow if those fit your production.

Use a separate caption feed for a YouTube event

YouTube’s documented event workflow sends captions to a signed ingestion URL using compatible captioning software. The caption feed is separate from the ordinary video stream, so a captioner or application must support the delivery method.

  1. Prepare the captioning setup. Use compatible caption software or a captioning provider, and ensure the computer’s system clock is accurate. YouTube’s guidance notes that antivirus software can interfere with captioning software.
  2. Set an event delay. YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for this caption workflow. Account for that delay in the event plan so captions and the viewed program can be coordinated.
  3. Enable captions for the event. In the event’s YouTube controls, turn on captions and copy the signed caption ingestion URL.
  4. Give the URL to the caption software or captioner. Configure the compatible sender to use that signed URL. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
  5. Verify delivery before relying on it. Confirm captions appear for viewers and check how they behave in the live player and recording.

Send embedded captions or show an OBS text overlay

Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions

If your encoder can include captions in the video signal, YouTube documents an embedded route: enable captions in the event workflow, choose Embedded 608/708, and configure the encoder for EIA-608/CEA-708 captions. The encoder must actually provide the selected format; selecting an option in YouTube alone does not create captions.

OBS plugin and on-screen text

The LocalVocal project documents local real-time transcription, OBS text-source display, file output, RTMP caption sending, and optional translation. Those are project-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular release will work with every OBS version or destination. Check the project’s current release and installation instructions before installing or building a show around it.

Decide whether you need closed captions or text burned into the picture. A text-source overlay can make words visible in the image, while a closed-caption feed remains a distinct caption delivery method. Test the chosen output in the destination player and in the recording; their appearance and controls may differ.

When translated captions are required

YouTube’s native automatic live-caption route is English-only. For a different language, investigate a compatible external captioning workflow or production tool that supports the required language and delivery format; confirm support with the software or provider before the event.

For teams operating an HLS or DASH service, Google Cloud Live Stream documents AI-generated and translated captions. Supported language codes vary by service location. Captions are asynchronous by default; synchronous display reduces the mismatch between text and audio, but increases end-to-end media latency. This is a streaming-service workflow, not a simple switch for an ordinary creator going live on YouTube.

Improve recognition and troubleshoot failures

  • Automatic captions are missing from stream settings: Check whether the channel and stream are eligible, whether the video language is English, and whether the stream uses normal latency. The feature may not be enabled for every channel.
  • Captions do not appear or stop arriving: For a separate feed, confirm the caption software supports YouTube’s signed ingestion workflow, that it is using the correct signed URL, and that the stream entry point has not already used its one allowed feed.
  • The caption feed is out of sync: Review the event delay and the captioning workflow. YouTube recommends 30 or 60 seconds of broadcast delay for the external event-caption route. For Google Cloud’s HLS/DASH workflow, synchronous captions reduce text/audio mismatch but add media latency.
  • Words are inaccurate or missing: YouTube identifies poor sound, overlapping speakers, and multiple simultaneous languages as conditions that can cause caption problems. Improve the speech signal and reduce competing voices where practical. YouTube also warns that accents, dialects, mispronunciations, and noisy speech can be misrepresented. No accuracy percentage is established here.
  • Captioning software will not connect: For the YouTube event workflow, check the computer’s system clock and whether antivirus software is interfering. Verify that the sender is configured for the chosen delivery format.
  • Captions look right live but not in the replay: YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain after the broadcast. Separate captions for the video on demand are generated later and may differ, so review the replay separately.
  • Overlay text is absent for some viewers: An overlay is part of the picture, unlike a separate closed-caption track. Confirm the production tool is rendering it into the output and inspect both the destination player and recording.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your YouTube broadcast is a loop of uploaded recordings rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo can keep that channel live from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos; it does not generate AI captions or go live from a camera. Prepare captions through the method appropriate to your content and verify how they reach viewers before relying on them.
