To stop a voice narrating a film or show, open the player’s audio menu and switch from a track labeled “Audio Description,” “AD,” “Video Description,” or similar to the regular language track, such as “English.” If the voice reads menus, buttons, or volume changes instead, turn off the device’s screen reader or voice guide. The right setting depends on which device or app is producing the sound.
First, identify what the voice is describing
Audio description is an additional audio track that narrates visual information—such as actions, expressions, settings, costumes, or scene changes. It is intended to make video more accessible to blind and low-vision viewers. It is different from captions, subtitles, and a screen reader. Samsung explains the distinction between its TV accessibility audio features.

Track names vary. Look for “Audio Description,” “Descriptive Audio,” “Video Description,” “Described Video,” “AD,” “English – Audio Description,” “English [AD],” or “English – Descriptive.”
The fastest fix in most streaming apps
- Start the movie, episode, or live program.
- Press the remote’s OK, Select, Up, or Down button, or tap the screen, to show playback controls.
- Open Audio, Audio & Subtitles, Languages, or the speech-bubble or keyboard icon.
- Under Audio, choose the ordinary language track—such as English—instead of a track marked Audio Description, AD, or Descriptive.
- Close the menu and resume playback.
This changes the program’s audio track; it does not disable captions. Menu labels and icons differ by app, device, software version, region, and title.

Change the audio track in your streaming service
Netflix
While the title is playing, open Audio & Subtitles. Under Audio, select a language option that does not contain “Audio Description,” then close the menu. If the described track returns on an Apple device, Netflix says to check the device accessibility setting as well:
- Apple TV: Open Settings → General → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions and set it to Off.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions and turn it off.
Then return to Netflix, select a non-described track during playback, and play the title for at least five minutes so Netflix can save the choice to the profile. Netflix’s instructions for other devices do not give one universal device path; if the issue persists elsewhere, consult Netflix’s audio-description troubleshooting guidance.
Max
During playback, open the speech-bubble Audio and Subtitles menu. Under Audio, choose the preferred language—for example, English—rather than English – Audio Description. Max notes that the phone, tablet, or other playback device may also have an Audio Description setting enabled if narration continues. See Max’s instructions for turning off Audio Description.

Disney+
While streaming, select the player’s keyboard icon, open the audio choices, and select the regular language track instead of an Audio Description track. The available labels can vary by title and device. Disney+ describes audio and caption choices in its player-controls guidance.

Prime Video
Start playback and open the playback menu. Depending on the device, look for Audio, Audio and Languages, or Alternative Audio Tracks, then choose the ordinary language track without Audio Description. Amazon confirms support for alternative audio tracks and Audio Descriptions, but the exact menu path is not established as universal across Prime Video devices and regions. See Prime Video help.
Apple TV app
Start the video, reveal the playback controls, open the audio controls, and choose the standard audio track rather than the described track. On iPhone or iPad, the system-wide control is Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions. Apple notes that not all videos include an audio-description track; its accessibility guide also distinguishes this setting from VoiceOver, which reads interface items aloud.

If the voice reads menus or controls
Do not change the movie’s audio track for menu narration. Turn off the screen reader or voice-guide feature on the device that is speaking. The labels and paths below are general guidance; manufacturers may change them between models and software versions.
Apple devices: VoiceOver versus Audio Descriptions
If the voice reads buttons or screen items, check Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver. If it narrates scenes in the program, check Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions or change the track in the player. Apple’s accessibility instructions cover the Audio Descriptions setting on iPhone and iPad.

On Android phones running Android 13 or later, the general route is Settings → Accessibility → Audio description. On Android TV, look under Settings → Device Preferences → Accessibility → Audio description. Availability and labels can vary by provider, manufacturer, and software version. Samsung TVs
Samsung distinguishes Voice Guide, which reads TV menus and controls, from Audio Description, which narrates supported programs. Audio Subtitles is a separate feature that reads captions aloud. On supported models, the general paths are:
- Voice Guide: Home → Menu → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Accessibility → Voice Guide.
- Audio Description: Home → Menu → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Accessibility → Audio Description.
- Audio Subtitles: Home → Menu → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Accessibility → Audio Subtitles.
Turn off only the feature matching what you hear. Samsung’s TV audio accessibility guide describes these controls; menu names can differ by model.
LG TVs
If the program is narrated, look under Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility for Audio Description or Video Description. Older models may put Video Description directly under Accessibility. If menus, volume changes, or highlighted controls are read aloud, look for Audio Guidance and turn it off; on some Magic Remotes, holding Mute opens the Accessibility menu. LG says paths vary by webOS version and model. Its support pages explain Video Description and Audio Guidance.

Why narration can come back
The audio choice may be saved by a profile, app, device, or title, and an app may have its own player controls rather than follow a system-wide setting. If it happens only in one title, start by checking that title’s active track. If it happens in every app, check device-level settings and any connected equipment. Casting and HDMI setups can involve several separate controls.
A TV app is not always the source. A streaming stick, game console, cable or satellite box, or receiver may be supplying the audio. LG also notes that an external set-top box can retain its own description setting. LG’s Video Description guidance covers this distinction.
If you still hear narration
- Reopen the program’s audio menu and confirm the selected track does not say Audio Description, AD, or Descriptive.
- Close and reopen the app after changing the track.
- Check the TV, phone, tablet, or streaming device for Audio Description or Video Description; separately check its screen reader or voice guide if menus are being read aloud.
- If you use an HDMI-connected streaming stick, cable box, satellite receiver, or game console, check that device’s Accessibility or secondary-audio settings too.
- Try another title. If only one title has narration, its available track choices may be title-specific; not every video includes a non-described alternative.
- Try the same title in the same service on another device. This can help locate whether the setting belongs to the title, app, or original device.
- If the service offers no other audio track, contact the service or provider. An app or device setting cannot create a separate track that the provider has not supplied.
For Netflix on the Apple-device paths above, the service specifically recommends playing the selected track for at least five minutes to save the profile preference; that timing is not a general rule for other services. Netflix’s guidance explains the profile step.
