Grimes called Kito’s “Cold Touch” an “amazing song” and a “masterpiece” in May 2023. The track, credited to Kito featuring GrimesAI, was described at the time as the first officially released and credited song to use an AI-generated version of Grimes’ voice. It was not composed by AI: people wrote and produced it, while voice-conversion software changed a human vocal performance to sound like Grimes.
What song did Grimes call a “masterpiece”?
“Cold Touch” is a track by Australian-born, Los Angeles-based DJ and producer Kito, with a vocal credit to GrimesAI. Contemporary coverage identified its commercial release with Mad Decent and described it as the first officially released, credited song to use an AI version of Grimes’ voice—not the first AI song generally. Grimes praised it on May 15, 2023. Her “masterpiece” description was her own reaction, not a consensus review. MusicTech reported her post, and Futurism covered the release.

How was “Cold Touch” made?
Kito said the song took shape during a London writing session with Nina Nesbitt and Fred Ball. The idea came after she saw Grimes invite people to use her AI voice. The song imagines an AI trying to understand love, but its creative work was human-led: the writers developed the song and lyrics, and people handled the production and arrangement. Kito described the result as a human song using AI to mimic another human voice. Kito explained the process in an interview with NME.
What the AI did—and did not do
A human performed the guide vocal. Elf.Tech then transformed that performance into a voice resembling Grimes’. In this kind of conversion, the source performance supplies choices such as timing, phrasing, melody and expression; the model changes the vocal identity. That makes “human-written song with AI-transformed vocals” more accurate than “song written by AI.” Kito said the software had limitations and was still being improved at the time.

The track’s GrimesAI credit does not mean Grimes personally recorded or conventionally sang the vocal. Nor does the credit alone establish that every online track labeled “Grimes AI” was made through the authorized platform.
What was Elf.Tech?
Elf.Tech was Grimes’ voice-mimicking platform, described in 2023 beta coverage as letting users upload a vocal or record one directly, then receive a version in a Grimes-like voice. It provided a way to use a human performance as input for voice conversion; it was not simply a text prompt that independently generated a complete song. Reporting said the technology had support from Never Before Heard Sounds. NME covered the beta, while Pitchfork described the project as a form of “communal voice ownership”—an attributed description, not a settled legal category.

Grimes framed the project as a way to loosen music-industry gatekeeping by letting people use an authorized model of her voice. The materials describe a 2023 beta and launch; they do not establish whether Elf.Tech, its terms, or its distribution arrangements remain available today.
What did Grimes’ 50/50 royalty proposal mean?
On April 24, 2023, Grimes said she would split royalties on successful songs using her AI voice. Subsequent launch coverage described the arrangement more specifically as a 50% share of master-recording royalties, alongside Grimes feature credit and a distribution route subject to the relevant process. The figure was a reported historical proposal, not evidence of a current offer. NME reported the initial announcement; its beta coverage and Pitchfork’s launch report supplied further context.

- Master-recording royalties are income tied to a particular sound recording.
- Publishing and composition rights concern the underlying song—such as its lyrics and music—and are distinct from ownership of a recording.
- Credit, consent and likeness authorization concern how a voice or identity is used; they are not automatically the same as songwriting ownership.
So the reported 50% did not mean Grimes automatically owned half of the lyrics, composition or publishing. Distribution approval, platform terms and rights in the underlying song remained separate matters. A historical public invitation also does not establish a presently valid license; anyone planning a release needs to check current terms and permissions rather than relying on a 2023 statement.

Grimes’ proposal arrived amid a dispute over unauthorized celebrity voice imitation. A viral track called “Heart on My Sleeve,” with AI vocals resembling Drake and The Weeknd, was removed after objections from Universal Music Group. The contrast was sharp: one case involved voices used without the artists’ authorization, while Grimes proposed a system for licensing use of her own voice and sharing revenue. That approach treated a recognizable voice as a creative asset an artist could authorize and potentially monetize. It did not settle the wider questions. Permission from one artist cannot grant rights to another performer’s voice, a copyrighted sample, lyrics or composition. Voice likeness, the model, the underlying song and the released recording raise distinct questions, and applicable rules vary with the facts and jurisdiction.
Grimes said users could use her name and likeness but urged them to be tasteful. She also said extremely offensive material could prompt takedowns, naming examples such as “baby murder songs” and Nazi anthems. Those were informal public comments reported in 2023, not a substitute for a current license or platform agreement.

What “Cold Touch” shows about AI in music
The track illustrates a narrower, more useful point than the claim that AI made a song: AI can alter the perceived identity of a vocal within a conventional human-written and human-produced recording. A transformed voice can carry the guide singer’s performance choices while resembling someone else, which is why consent and credit matter even when the model did not write the song.
It also shows the limits of treating an artist-controlled model as a complete solution to AI-music disputes. The arrangement depended on permission, defined terms and a release process; it did not establish a universal license for voice cloning or resolve ownership of compositions, recordings or other people’s performances. “Cold Touch” is best understood as a human pop production and a 2023 experiment in authorized AI voice conversion.
