Yes. Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later used adapted iPhone 15 Pro Max units as its principal camera system. But “shot on iPhone” does not mean every scene was filmed on an unmodified phone, and “biggest ever” was a reported comparison based largely on the film’s approximately $75 million budget—not an official, permanent record. The film opened in theaters on June 20, 2025, so the original headline’s “will be” is now out of date.
What “shot on iPhone” means for this film
WIRED reported in September 2024 that people connected with the production confirmed the use of iPhone 15 Pro Max units. The most accurate description is that iPhones were the film’s principal camera system, not necessarily its only imaging devices. The same report said some scenes used action cameras attached to farm animals. WIRED’s production report details the camera claim and the equipment seen on set.
That distinction matters: the phone was the core image-capture device, but the production did not rely on a bare handset and its built-in lenses for every shot. The film is directed by Boyle and written by Alex Garland, according to Sony Pictures’ film page.
Why it was called the biggest iPhone-shot movie
The “biggest” label referred chiefly to scale and reported budget. WIRED put the budget at about $75 million; that figure is reported rather than confirmed in Sony’s official film information. MobileSyrup also described the production as the biggest iPhone-shot film on the basis of that reported budget in its September 2024 coverage.

The comparison was striking because earlier prominent features associated with iPhones included Sean Baker’s Tangerine (iPhone 5S), Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane (iPhone 7 Plus), and Soderbergh’s High Flying Bird (iPhone 8). WIRED characterized those films as smaller-budget, limited-release productions compared with Boyle’s large studio feature.
There is no formal record category established here for “biggest movie ever shot on iPhone.” It could refer to budget, production scale, or prominence, and the reported $75 million figure is not an audited accounting. A careful formulation is that 28 Years Later was, at the time of the 2024 report, the biggest-budget major film publicly known to use iPhones as its principal camera system.

The iPhone was part of a professional camera rig
According to WIRED, the phones were housed in protective aluminum cages and paired with adapters for larger lenses. The report identified a Beast depth-of-field adapter as an example of the kind of system that can project an image from a larger lens onto a smartphone’s imaging surface. The setup also involved support hardware and controls; it was not simply a phone held in a crew member’s hand.
The iPhone 15 Pro models can record 4K ProRes Log. ProRes is intended to preserve more image information for postproduction than heavily compressed consumer video, while Log footage is deliberately flat-looking so a colorist can shape contrast and color later. Those capabilities describe what the phone can do; the available reporting does not establish the film’s exact frame rate, codec configuration, storage brand, or color pipeline.

High-data-rate recording creates practical demands. External storage may be needed for demanding formats, and image capture is only one part of a feature workflow. Lens choice, exposure, lighting, camera movement, focus, monitoring, data handling, editing, visual effects, and grading all help determine what appears on screen.
Why Boyle chose a compact camera
The iPhone choice fits a longer interest in lightweight, unconventional digital cameras. WIRED reported that Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle used Canon XL-1 cameras on the original 28 Days Later, a comparatively small digital camera system at the time. The point is not that the two productions used identical methods; it is that mobility and immediacy have been part of Boyle’s approach to this series.

In a later WIRED interview, Boyle said the iPhone’s small size and directness helped the filmmakers capture action and violence in ways that would have been harder with a conventional camera. He described a multi-camera arrangement that could point up to 20 iPhone 15 Pro Max cameras at a subject for certain sequences, creating what he called a “poor man’s bullet time.” The description concerns particular action setups, not the camera configuration for the entire film. WIRED’s interview with Boyle explains the multi-angle idea.
A synchronized array of small cameras can record a moment from many viewpoints at once. That kind of coverage can produce a distinctive frozen or shifting perspective on fast action. The phone’s compactness therefore offered a creative and logistical advantage beyond the price of an individual camera body.

What the production does—and does not—prove
The choice was not simply a way to make a major film cheaply. A low-cost camera body does not make an entire production inexpensive, and adding cinema lenses, cages, monitoring, power, storage, and support can turn a phone into one component of a complex rig. WIRED also reported that Apple provided technical assistance, but did not establish the nature or financial value of that help. That is not evidence that Apple financed the film.
Nor does a phone camera eliminate trade-offs. A smartphone sensor remains smaller than the sensors in many cinema cameras; autofocus can be difficult to control in complex action; and sustained high-resolution recording raises storage and heat-management demands. External lenses and adapters add flexibility but also complexity and potential optical compromises. The production’s result depended on professional crew and postproduction as well as the capture device.
For independent filmmakers, the most transferable lesson is not that a consumer phone can reproduce a studio feature on its own. It is that a small camera can make unusual positions, fast deployment, and multiple simultaneous viewpoints practical. The creative question is what a compact camera lets you do that a larger rig makes difficult—not whether the phone alone replaces a camera department.
