Apple’s behind-the-scenes video about 28 Years Later reveals a striking production method: Danny Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle used iPhone 15 Pro Max units as the principal camera for much of the film, including a custom rig capable of carrying up to 20 phones at once.

That does not mean the entire movie was filmed on stock iPhones. Apple describes the setup as being used in select scenes, while reporting identifies additional action cameras, drones, digital cameras and professional film equipment. The important story is not that a phone replaced a film crew, but that its compact size enabled shots and perspectives that would have been difficult with a conventional camera package.

What Apple’s video shows

Published on July 29, 2025, Apple’s behind-the-scenes feature presents Boyle’s use of the iPhone as a cinematography experiment built around mobility and multiple viewpoints.

The production created a purpose-built multi-camera rig that could hold as many as 20 iPhones. Rather than using one large camera to record a single angle, the team could capture several perspectives simultaneously. That approach suited the film’s frantic, violent action, where a conventional camera, crane or dolly might be too slow, too large or too disruptive.

The rig was not 20 ordinary phones taped together. Reports describe custom cages, mounts, lens attachments and other accessories, operated within a professional feature-film workflow.

Which iPhone was used?

The principal model was the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Some headlines shorten this to “iPhone 15” or refer broadly to iPhones, but the more precise reporting identifies the Pro Max as the main device associated with the production.

It was also not Apple’s newest iPhone at the time of the film’s 2025 theatrical release. The production used 2024-era hardware, adapted and controlled for the needs of a major film.

Was all of 28 Years Later shot on iPhones?

No. “Shot on iPhone” is accurate as a description of an important part of the production, but it is misleading if it suggests that every frame came from an unmodified consumer phone.

The safest description is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max served as the principal camera for much of the production. Apple’s own wording limits its claim to “select scenes,” and reporting also identifies action cameras, drones and other digital and specialty cameras.

Myth: Every shot was captured on a stock iPhone.

Reality: iPhone 15 Pro Max cameras were integrated into a custom system and used extensively, alongside other cameras, accessories and a full professional production team.

Why Boyle chose a phone

Mobility and access

A phone is far smaller and lighter than a conventional cinema camera package. That makes it easier to move quickly through locations, work in confined spaces and place cameras close to performers without building a large support system around every angle.

For a film depicting a collapsed society and sudden, unpredictable violence, that physical flexibility could be more valuable than simply having a higher specification on paper. The camera could be placed where a larger system would be awkward or impossible.

Many viewpoints at once

The 20-camera rig’s central advantage was not merely image quality. It allowed the crew to collect a dense set of simultaneous angles. In fast action, that can reduce the need to repeat dangerous or difficult performances and can produce fragmented, immersive coverage of a moment.

It also changes the grammar of the scene. Instead of one camera observing violence from a carefully selected position, numerous small cameras can make the event feel immediate, chaotic and physically close.

A continuation of Boyle’s digital aesthetic

The method echoes the visual thinking behind 28 Days Later, which used small digital video cameras to help Danny Boyle and Anthony Dod Mantle create a raw, mobile look. The two films were made with different generations and classes of equipment, however. Any resemblance is as much a result of direction, cinematography and editing as it is of camera size.

The sequel also had access to far more advanced accessories, post-production, visual effects and production infrastructure. A small camera does not make a large-scale feature a small production.

A camera that fits the story’s world

The phone’s ubiquity also makes it a thematically plausible tool for a post-apocalyptic story. In a world where sophisticated production infrastructure may have disappeared, consumer electronics could remain recognizable and available. That is best understood as part of the film’s creative logic, rather than as proof that the phone was chosen for one reason alone.

How the professional workflow mattered

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max support features that make them more workable in a professional pipeline, including ProRes recording, Apple Log, 4K capture and USB-C recording to external storage on supported configurations. Apple explains those capabilities in its behind-the-scenes account of its “Scary Fast” event.

Those features provide useful context, but they do not establish that every capability was used for every scene in 28 Years Later. More importantly, the image was produced by an entire system:

The trade-offs of using phones

A smartphone can be extraordinarily useful without being a universal replacement for a cinema camera. Compared with dedicated systems, filmmakers must account for differences in sensor size, dynamic range, low-light performance, rolling shutter, highlight handling and lens choice.

Computational processing can also be helpful for ordinary shooting but undesirable when a production needs consistent, predictable images across cameras. Add-on lenses and filters expand the phone’s options, but they add weight and may introduce flare, vignetting or softness.

A multi-phone setup creates further complications: matching exposure and colour, synchronizing cameras, supplying power, managing storage and keeping many devices recording reliably. Heat and sustained recording can matter as much as headline resolution. Footage from phones must also be matched with footage from action cameras, drones and other digital systems.

None of these limitations makes the approach a gimmick. They explain why the production needed custom engineering and experienced crews, and why the phones were used where their particular strengths mattered.

What this means for independent filmmakers

A recent iPhone can be a practical camera for shorts, documentaries, music videos, inserts, stunts and difficult angles. But the lesson of 28 Years Later is not “buy a phone and recreate a studio feature.” It is “choose the camera that best serves the shot.”

For a phone-based production, the priorities are usually:

  1. Test the complete recording, editing and grading workflow before the shoot.
  2. Use manual control over exposure, focus and frame rate where possible.
  3. Plan reliable power and storage, especially for high-bitrate ProRes footage.
  4. Prioritize sound, lighting and ND filtration over simply buying the newest phone.
  5. Add a cage, external drive, lens or stabilizer only when a specific shot requires it.
  6. Expect multi-phone shooting to create synchronization and colour-matching work.

Apps such as Blackmagic Camera can offer more cinema-oriented controls, depending on the device and operating system. External storage, mounting systems and accessories may also help, but no accessory solves every limitation of a small sensor or replaces skilled cinematography.

What the Apple video really demonstrates

Apple’s feature is best read as a production story, not a claim that the company made 28 Years Later or that professional cinema cameras have become obsolete. Boyle and Mantle used a familiar device in an unusually engineered way because its size, availability and ability to multiply viewpoints served the film’s visual language.

The result makes “shot on an iPhone” more interesting—and more complicated—than a marketing slogan. The phone was a crucial camera component, but the cinematic image came from the combination of device, rig, operators, lighting, sound, post-production and creative intent.
