There is no verified public statement establishing how Bruno Mars feels about Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers.” The song is widely read as a breakup song about Liam Hemsworth, while its resemblance to Mars’s “When I Was Your Man” has prompted fan discussion and a copyright lawsuit. Those connections do not prove that Cyrus wrote “Flowers” about Mars or that he has publicly endorsed or criticized it.

Did Bruno Mars say anything about “Flowers”?

No verified public statement from Mars has established his opinion of the song. It would be inaccurate to say that he approved of it, disliked it, or stayed silent by choice: the public record described here does not establish his personal reaction.

Is “Flowers” about Bruno Mars or Liam Hemsworth?

The relationship story associated with “Flowers” points to Hemsworth, Cyrus’s former husband—not Mars. Cyrus released the single on January 13, 2023, Hemsworth’s birthday, a coincidence that helped fuel interpretations of the song as a pointed response to their breakup. That timing is suggestive to listeners, but by itself it does not confirm the intended meaning of the song.

Mars enters the story for a different reason: listeners hear “Flowers” as turning around the premise of his 2012 song “When I Was Your Man.” That makes him part of the musical comparison, not the person identified in the breakup narrative.

Why do people compare “Flowers” with “When I Was Your Man”?

The comparison centers on familiar relationship images—flowers, holding hands and dancing—but puts them in a different emotional frame. Mars’s song looks back with regret at things its narrator failed to do for a partner. Cyrus’s chorus presents a narrator who can give herself some of the affection and care she once wanted from someone else.

Comparison “When I Was Your Man” “Flowers”
Narrator’s perspective A former partner regrets what he did not do. A narrator emphasizes self-sufficiency after a breakup.
Shared images Flowers, hand-holding and dancing appear in the relationship regret. Flowers, holding one’s own hand and dancing are recast as acts of self-care.
Relationship context A standalone song by Mars, released in 2012. A 2023 Cyrus single widely interpreted in connection with her breakup with Hemsworth.

The contrast is why many listeners describe “Flowers” as an answer or inversion of Mars’s song. That is an interpretation of the songs’ similarities and differences; it is not, on its own, proof of what Cyrus intended or how the songs were created.

Did Miley Cyrus copy Bruno Mars?

Tempo Music Investments sued Cyrus and her co-writers in 2024, alleging that “Flowers” used unauthorized melodic, harmonic and lyrical elements from “When I Was Your Man.” The Guardian quoted the complaint as saying: “Any fan of Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man knows that Miley Cyrus’s Flowers did not achieve all of that success on its own.” That is the plaintiff’s allegation, not a court finding.

The latest located report, from February 2026, described Cyrus making a renewed attempt to dismiss the case. The available information does not establish a final infringement judgment. A lawsuit alleges a claim; it does not settle whether the songs’ similarities amount to copyright infringement.

What the “Flowers” story does—and does not—show

The most careful reading separates three things that are often collapsed into one headline: “Flowers” is associated in public interpretation with Cyrus’s breakup with Hemsworth; its lyrical premise is often compared with Mars’s “When I Was Your Man”; and the alleged musical similarities are the subject of a lawsuit whose reported status does not establish a final ruling. None of those facts supplies a verified statement about Mars’s personal feelings.
