How the free live viewing options worked
For viewers watching live in 2024, CBS News made the debate available through its free digital distribution. Free streaming still required internet access and a compatible device; platform and territory availability could vary.

On a computer, viewers could open CBSNews.com or the official CBS News YouTube stream. On a phone or tablet, they could use the CBS News app where supported, a mobile browser, or YouTube.
Smart TV or streaming device
Viewers could look for the CBS News app or YouTube on a supported connected TV or streaming device. Availability varies by device and platform. Casting from a phone or computer was another option when both the sending device and television supported it.

CBS News also distributed its 24/7 stream through supported services, including Pluto TV. Sling promoted a free CBS News 24/7 simulcast for the event through Sling Freestream. A 24/7 news stream is not necessarily the same thing as a local CBS affiliate feed, and channel availability can change.
Watching on a television without internet
If a local CBS affiliate is within reception range, an antenna can receive its over-the-air broadcast without cable, a streaming subscription, or internet access. Reception depends on location, terrain, nearby buildings, antenna placement, and the station’s signal. Check local coverage before buying equipment; no antenna guarantees CBS reception in every home.

No paid subscription was necessary just to watch the debate live online in 2024: the CBS News digital streams were free. Paramount+ was an additional official option, not the only one. Its program page may be useful to existing subscribers, but current replay access and subscription requirements should be checked on the platform.
A live-TV service may make sense for someone who wants local channels, sports, news, or a broader cable replacement—not for a single debate if a free official stream is available. Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Fubo, and DIRECTV STREAM offer live-TV packages, but local CBS carriage depends on market and plan. Check a provider’s ZIP-code channel lookup before signing up. What time coverage began on debate night
The debate itself began at 9 p.m. Eastern, but CBS News coverage started earlier. - Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to check whether the connection is the problem.
