Lewis; it does not document a verified historical encounter. The 2024 drama places the two men in London on September 3, 1939, for a debate about belief in God and humanity’s future. Its source is Mark St. Germain’s play, and the film’s scenes should be understood as historical fiction rather than proof that the conversation happened.
What is Freud’s Last Session about?
The film’s story begins in London on September 3, 1939, as Europe faces the approach of World War II. In Sony Pictures’ synopsis, Sigmund Freud, played by Anthony Hopkins, receives C.S. Lewis, played by Matthew Goode. Their imagined conversation turns on humanity and belief in God. Sony Pictures’ film page lists it as a 2024 drama.

The story also brings Anna Freud into the drama and follows Lewis’s unconventional relationship with his friend’s mother. These are elements of the film’s narrative, not independent evidence about a historical meeting between Freud and Lewis.
Did Freud and C.S. Lewis really meet?
The film’s central encounter is speculative, not an established historical event. An Associated Press review published January 4, 2024, notes that Freud was recorded as meeting an unnamed Oxford don shortly before his death; it does not identify that visitor as Lewis or establish that the two men met. The movie turns that uncertainty into a dramatic premise rather than presenting a documented conversation. The Associated Press review describes the encounter as speculative.

Is Freud’s Last Session based on a true story?
It is based on a play, but its defining Freud–Lewis meeting is imagined. The real historical figures, Freud’s final period, and the wartime setting provide the frame; the supposed conversation between the two men is not verified by the historical account cited above. The official synopsis describes the film’s drama, while the AP review supplies the important qualification about the encounter.
What play is the film based on?
The film adapts Mark St. Germain’s two-character play, as the Associated Press identifies it. That makes the play a natural next step for readers who want to encounter the story in its stage form. The film’s distributor, Sony Pictures Classics, credits Matthew Brown as director and lists Brown and St. Germain as screenwriters. Its synopsis says the film interweaves past, present, and fantasy. Sony Pictures Classics’ film page provides the official synopsis and credits.
Rank #2
The formats suggest different scopes: the AP identifies the source as a two-character play, while the distributor describes the film as weaving together past, present, and fantasy. That description alone does not establish a scene-by-scene comparison between the works.
