Disney’s ESPN streaming service launched after its “early fall” tease—what it includes

Disney announced ESPN’s direct-to-consumer service on May 13, 2025, describing an “early fall” launch. The service actually launched on August 21, 2025, under the simple name ESPN. It runs inside the existing ESPN app and ESPN.com—not a new standalone app—and offers two distinct tiers: ESPN Unlimited for the flagship networks and ESPN Select for ESPN+ programming.

The short version

If you want… You need…
ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, ACC Network and other flagship channels ESPN Unlimited or qualifying pay-TV access
ESPN+ programming without the main television networks ESPN Select
ESPN alongside Disney+ and Hulu An eligible Disney bundle
ESPN without paying twice Check your cable or live-TV provider entitlement first

Disney’s original announcement is available at the Walt Disney Company. ESPN later confirmed the launch date in its August 2025 announcement.

What Disney announced—and what changed

On May 13, 2025, Disney said ESPN would become available directly to consumers, with access to ESPN’s linear networks, ESPN+ content, redesigned apps and Disney+/Hulu bundle options. “Early fall” was a launch window, not the final date: ESPN confirmed August 21, 2025, and delivered the service then.

The product was not branded “ESPN+” or “ESPN Flagship.” ESPN+ remained the name associated with the existing streaming content library, while the new full-access tier became ESPN Unlimited. Cable, satellite and virtual pay-TV distribution continued alongside the direct subscription.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

What ESPN Unlimited includes

Unlimited is the closest direct-to-consumer substitute for the ESPN portion of a pay-TV package. At launch, ESPN listed these networks and services:

  • ESPN and ESPN2
  • ESPNU, ESPNEWS and ESPN Deportes
  • SEC Network and ACC Network
  • ESPN on ABC
  • ESPN+, ESPN3, SEC Network+ and ACCNX

ESPN said this package represented more than 47,000 live events annually at launch, plus replays, studio shows, documentaries and original programming. The current product page also lists NFL Network; lineups can change, so check the live plan description before subscribing at ESPN’s bundle page.

Sports represented in the service

ESPN’s launch description covered programming and rights involving the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA, UFC, UFL, SEC, ACC and Big 12 sports, the College Football Playoff, NCAA championships, LaLiga, Bundesliga, NWSL, FA Cup, the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open tennis, the Masters, PGA Championship, PGA Tour, TGL, Little League World Series, Premier Lacrosse League and WWE-related programming.

A rights list is not a promise that every game is available everywhere. Local-market rules, league exclusivity, regional feeds, blackouts and later rights changes can remove particular events. Disney specifically warns that some in-market games may be blacked out: Disney+ live-sports support.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

What ESPN Select includes—and does not

ESPN Select is the ESPN+ tier, not a discounted version of the flagship ESPN television package. ESPN’s current FAQ describes more than 30,000 live events annually across college sports, international soccer, golf, tennis, combat sports, studio programs, replays, ESPN Films and other originals.

Select does not include the complete ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNU or comparable linear-network lineup. If a college football game or studio show is airing on a main ESPN channel, Select alone generally is not the entitlement you need. See the plan definitions at ESPN’s FAQ.

What happened to ESPN+ subscribers?

ESPN+ was not discontinued. Existing standalone ESPN+ customers were moved to ESPN Select while retaining access to ESPN+ programming. Unlimited also includes that content. In practical terms, “ESPN” now describes the full service, while “ESPN Select” is the access level for the ESPN+ library.

Those figures should not be treated as August 2026 prices. ESPN’s live bundle page is dynamic and referenced savings against a regular bundle price of $94.99 in July 2026. Verify the amount, billing term, country and promotional expiration at the official ESPN signup flow before paying.

The app, Disney+ access and new features

There was no new ESPN streaming application. Subscribers use the existing ESPN app or ESPN.com. Eligible Disney bundle customers can also watch ESPN programming in Disney+, whose Live hub carries sports and other live programming. Disney+ subscribers without an ESPN entitlement receive only a limited sample.

Features ESPN added or promoted

  • SportsCenter For You: a personalized highlights, news and video feed, with an AI-generated commentary beta using selected ESPN personalities’ voices.
  • ESPN Verts: a swipeable vertical-video feed for mobile devices.
  • StreamCenter: synchronized second-screen controls and information for a connected-TV stream.
  • Multiview: up to four simultaneous games on supported connected-TV devices.
  • Catch Up To Live: key-play highlights for viewers joining a game already in progress.
  • Integrated live statistics, ESPN Fantasy information, ESPN BET information, Fanatics merchandise links and QR-code tools.

Availability depends on the device and platform. Disney bundle viewers may use Disney+ for eligible streams, but the ESPN app remains the primary destination for features such as Multiview, StreamCenter, personalized feeds and integrated sports tools. ESPN’s launch feature descriptions are in its press-room announcement.

Can cable and live-TV customers still watch ESPN?

Yes. Authenticated customers of participating providers can continue using the ESPN app, and some plans include the Unlimited entitlement. ESPN’s current FAQ lists Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DIRECTV, Spectrum, Verizon FiOS, U-verse and Cox among access routes, subject to the exact package, market and activation rules.

Blackouts, rights and device limits

  • Standalone streaming does not remove local-market or in-market blackouts.
  • Rights packages can contain regional exclusions, alternate feeds and schedule-dependent availability.
  • Not every app feature works on every television, phone or web browser.
  • Multiview requires a supported connected-TV platform.
  • ESPN’s current FAQ says most content can stream on up to three devices; restrictions can vary by event or service.

Which option fits your household?

Choose ESPN Unlimited

Choose Unlimited if you need the main ESPN channels, nationally televised college sports, the broader network lineup or a sports-only alternative to paying for a traditional TV package.

Choose ESPN Select

Select fits viewers who mainly want ESPN+ programming—college events, international soccer, golf, tennis, combat sports and ESPN originals—and do not need ESPN’s flagship television networks.

Keep a pay-TV package

A live-TV service may be better when you also need local broadcast stations, regional sports networks, news channels or other cable networks. It can be especially wasteful to add Unlimited when your current plan already supplies it.

Choose a Disney bundle

A Disney+, Hulu and ESPN bundle can make sense for a household that already uses the entertainment services and values ESPN inside Disney+. Compare the checkout price with separate subscriptions on the day you sign up.

For casual viewers

If you watch only occasional ESPN events, check whether a household member’s provider or existing bundle already includes access before taking on a recurring sports subscription.

Bottom line

The “early fall” tease is over: ESPN launched on August 21, 2025. The decisive question is whether you need the flagship ESPN networks. Select is the ESPN+ content tier; Unlimited is the full ESPN network-and-streaming tier. Check provider authentication, current checkout pricing and event-specific blackout rules before subscribing.
