Spoilers for both premiere episodes, “Heaven’s Half Hour” and “Optics.” Daredevil: Born Again returns with the emotional force and street-level violence viewers expect, then pushes Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk into a changed New York shaped by grief, law, and politics. The two-episode launch is a continuation of the Netflix-era story, but it is also a new chapter whose strongest ideas arrive more confidently than some of its continuity-heavy setup.
What this premiere review covers
Marvel’s series launched on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, with two episodes: “Heaven’s Half Hour” and “Optics.” This review covers both, rather than treating the first episode alone as the full premiere. Marvel’s Season 1 page lists the series release date. Contemporary reporting on the two-episode launch and premiere context appears in The Ringer’s recap.
Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer with heightened abilities who has also operated as the vigilante Daredevil. Wilson Fisk, once his criminal adversary, is now pursuing political power in New York. The series carries forward characters and story from Netflix’s Daredevil, while presenting a refreshed format and a changed status quo. The Washington Post has described the revival as effectively a fourth season of that earlier show, even as its creators frame it as a new chapter.
Does the opening land emotionally?
Yes. “Heaven’s Half Hour” begins by reuniting Matt with Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, and then gives that reunion genuine emotional consequence. The opening’s violence is not just a signal that the show is back; it changes the circumstances of the characters and gives the later episodes’ quieter scenes a sense of loss. The series is most affecting when it lets that consequence sit rather than rushing to explain every connection.

The return of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio is central to the premiere’s success. Their performances make Matt and Fisk feel like opponents with history, not simply a lawyer and a politician arranged on opposite sides of a new plot. The Walt Disney Company’s series feature describes the show’s street-level focus and includes comments from the cast and production team.
How well do the action and legal drama balance?
The physical side is bruising, direct, and grounded in the show’s familiar street-level world. The premiere treats violence as painful and consequential rather than as a weightless interlude between plot points. That approach gives the action scenes force, especially against the legal material: Matt’s work as a lawyer is not a decorative alter ego but a different way of confronting power and harm.

The balance is promising rather than perfectly settled. TV Guide’s review praises the episodic legal structure and its role in making the revival accessible. The two modes give the series room to be more than a sequence of fights, though the premiere’s larger political and continuity setup can crowd the early going. Its best rhythm comes when courtroom or civic questions sharpen the same moral conflicts that drive Matt’s vigilantism.
Does the Netflix continuity help or hinder?
The show assumes an emotional history with the earlier series, and returning viewers will recognize the relationships and unresolved tensions that give the opening its weight. It does not simply reset Matt and Fisk. At the same time, the shift in status quo provides an entry point: by “Optics,” the story has moved forward, Fisk is operating in public politics, and Matt has stepped away from vigilantism.

That combination creates a real accessibility trade-off. TV Guide sees the episodic legal structure as a useful on-ramp, while Sideshow’s episode recap finds some of the continuity catch-up stilted. IGN’s video review description also flags the familiar “Murdock gives up being Daredevil” plot and sparse supporting characters as reservations. New viewers can follow the changed circumstances, but the premiere is more rewarding if they know the relationships it is asking them to feel.
What does Fisk’s political turn promise?
Fisk’s move into public politics gives the series a useful new arena. A criminal adversary seeking legitimacy and influence can put Matt’s legal practice, moral choices, and past conflict with Fisk into direct tension. The premiere establishes that possibility more than it fully develops it; its political direction is a hook for the series, not yet a complete argument about how Fisk will govern or what his campaign will do to New York.

The new frame fits the comic-book tradition of returning to a grounded, street-based ecosystem rather than escalating toward cosmic stakes. In a Disney company interview, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum described the aim as making a show that “touched our memory of the show”; he also compared the grounded approach to picking up a Daredevil comic. That framing helps explain why the revival leans on recognizable character dynamics even as it shifts the public stakes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the supporting cast and franchise connections integrated?
The returning central trio anchors the opening, but the new status quo asks the series to build out a wider world around Matt and Fisk. In these first two episodes, some supporting figures and broader franchise signals feel less fully integrated than the leads. That is a noticeable limitation of the launch: the series has a compelling central conflict, but not every surrounding piece yet carries the same dramatic weight.

The show’s title also evokes the celebrated Born Again comics arc, and The Ringer’s recap connects the series’ material to Daredevil comic history. That context is useful for understanding the franchise’s lineage, but the premiere should be judged as a television continuation rather than assumed to be a direct adaptation of one specific collected edition.
Verdict: a forceful continuation with room to settle
Daredevil: Born Again earns its return through the emotional impact of its opening, Cox and D’Onofrio’s central performances, and action that still feels grounded and costly. Its legal structure and Fisk’s political ambition offer a credible route into a new phase, while the continuity recaps and thinner supporting setup sometimes make the premiere feel more transitional than fully integrated. As a two-episode launch, it is compelling when it trusts its characters and less assured when it has to reconnect the machinery around them.
