DarkGame is worth considering for viewers who value atmosphere and visual craft over tightly integrated storytelling. In Jennie Kermode’s Eye For Film review, dated 12 October 2024, the thriller earns clear praise for its noirish cinematography and fluid movement, but the assessment is mixed to negative on narrative cohesion, tension and characterization. The police investigation and the captive’s survival story repeatedly interrupt one another, while detective Ben Jacobs is not developed enough to carry the investigation emotionally.
That makes the film a conditional recommendation: its dark-web game-show premise, stark imagery and roughly 101-minute running time may suit fans of grim, violent thrillers, but viewers seeking a carefully escalating mystery or a deeply drawn protagonist should temper expectations.
DarkGame review verdict at a glance
| Question | Answer from the Eye For Film assessment |
|---|---|
| What works best? | Noirish cinematography and a fluid visual style, particularly outside the Russian Roulette sequences. |
| What holds it back? | The investigation and captivity narratives interrupt each other, some plot elements fade in and out without useful payoff, and detective Ben Jacobs remains thinly drawn. |
| Who may enjoy it? | Viewers who prioritise dark atmosphere, visual movement and a brutal survival premise. |
| Who may be frustrated? | Anyone expecting sustained tension, seamless plotting or extensive character development. |
| How long is it? | The BBFC gives an approximate runtime of 101 minutes; the United States Apple TV listing gives 1 hour 41 minutes. |
Kermode’s review is one critic’s judgment, not a universal critical verdict. It identifies a specific split in the film: the images often have confidence, while the storytelling does not consistently convert the premise into accumulating suspense.
What is DarkGame about?
Directed by Howard J. Ford, DarkGame follows a police investigation into a dark-web game show in which kidnapped captives are forced to play for survival. The film sets its stakes immediately. Kermode describes an opening built around a masked presenter and a live execution, establishing a show that treats lethal violence as entertainment and placing the audience inside an intentionally hostile world.

The principal cast includes Ed Westwick as detective Ben Jacobs, Natalya Tsvetkova as Katia and Andrew P Stephen as the Presenter, according to the United States Apple TV listing. The narrative then works along two tracks: Jacobs and the police attempting to understand and stop the game, and Katia after her abduction as she tries to stay alive. In theory, those strands should reinforce each other. The investigation can provide context and urgency, while Katia’s ordeal can make the consequences immediate.
Kermode’s central objection is that the film does not always make those tracks feel interdependent. Instead of each strand tightening the other, the switches can feel like interruptions. The result is a thriller whose premise promises a race against time but whose structure sometimes releases pressure just as a scene begins to build it.
How the Eye For Film review judges the storytelling
Two strands that do not consistently converge
The investigation and captivity material are not inherently incompatible. A parallel structure can create suspense by giving viewers information the characters lack, or by cutting away at the moment of greatest danger. Kermode’s criticism is more specific: the transitions in DarkGame often stop momentum rather than intensify it. The police material and Katia’s survival material can feel like separate films taking turns, rather than two views of one tightening crisis.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction matters when deciding whether the film’s pacing will work for you. If you enjoy a fragmented thriller that moves between institutional investigation and personal survival, the alternating structure may provide variety. If you want every cut to increase uncertainty about the same immediate objective, the interruptions may read as a loss of tension.
Plot threads that appear and disappear
Kermode also notes that some plot elements arrive without developing into meaningful pressure and then recede. This is not the same as saying the film is impossible to follow. Her point is that the screenplay introduces pieces that do not always earn their presence through a satisfying consequence, emotional turn or investigative discovery.
For a thriller built around a secret online show, viewers reasonably expect clues, connections and revelations to accumulate. When a detail does not return or alter the characters’ choices, it can make the overall design feel less deliberate. The review therefore treats the problem as one of payoff and emphasis: the film has material, but not every piece contributes equally to the suspense machine.

A premise with more tension than the structure delivers
The dark-web game-show concept supplies an obvious source of intimidation. Captives are watched, controlled and forced to perform under threat of death; the police must identify the operation and intervene. Yet a high-concept premise does not automatically create sustained suspense. The threat has to evolve, the investigation has to change the odds, and the characters have to make decisions that carry a cost.

Kermode’s assessment is that the narrative interruptions weaken that progression. The film can announce danger effectively, especially in its opening, but the movement between threads sometimes prevents danger from compounding. Viewers may understand what is at stake while feeling less certain that the next scene will build on the previous one.
Characterization: why Ben Jacobs is a weak link
Detective Ben Jacobs is the story’s investigative anchor, played by Ed Westwick. Kermode finds him thinly drawn, which limits the police strand in two ways. First, the investigation has less emotional definition: we know Jacobs is pursuing the case, but the film gives him too little interior weight to make every setback or breakthrough feel personal. Second, his relationship to the victims and the wider moral stakes remains less developed than the premise seems to require.
A thriller does not need a tortured detective or an elaborate backstory to work. It does need a clear reason for the investigator to matter beyond delivering exposition and moving the case from one clue to the next. A more fully realised Jacobs could have connected the institutional plot to Katia’s immediate danger, making the film’s two halves feel like parts of the same human story. In Kermode’s reading, that bridge is underbuilt.
This criticism also affects the film’s balance. Katia’s abduction gives the audience a direct survival problem, while Jacobs represents the attempt to stop the system behind it. If one side has urgency but the other lacks dimension, the cross-cutting structure becomes harder to sustain. Viewers who mainly watch for the captive’s ordeal may find the investigation slows the film; viewers who prefer procedural detail may find Jacobs insufficiently developed to justify the detour.

Kermode’s positive judgment is clearest when she discusses the images. Her review states: “Outside of the Russian Roulette scenes, the film has much more visual appeal, with noirish cinematography and a fluid style which recalls director Howard J Ford’s early work with his brother Jonathan.”

That sentence identifies both the strength and its boundary. The film’s visual appeal is not presented as uniform approval of every set piece. Kermode specifically distinguishes the Russian Roulette scenes from the rest of the film, then praises the noirish look and fluid movement elsewhere. The compliment concerns how the camera, lighting and motion shape the film’s atmosphere, not whether the narrative always matches that confidence.
“Noirish” suggests a visual language built around shadow, contrast, controlled darkness and morally uncertain spaces. In a story about a hidden online game, that sensibility can make locations feel surveilled and unstable. A fluid style, meanwhile, can keep the camera in motion through investigation scenes or moments of pursuit, giving the film energy even when the script’s transitions are less effective.
The result is a useful reason to watch DarkGame even if the story’s weaknesses concern you. Some thrillers are remembered primarily for their plot mechanics; this one may appeal more as a piece of mood and movement. Kermode’s review does not claim that the cinematography repairs every structural problem. It says the images provide a distinct pleasure that the storytelling does not always provide.

What Howard J. Ford says about the film’s aims
In a September 2024 Eye For Film interview with Paul Risker, Ford described his initial concern that the script might become torture porn. He said he instead saw the possibility of a thriller with a character who could give the material heart and a noirish quality. He also praised the cinematographer’s risky lighting and said the script was complex for the actors.
Those comments explain the ambition behind the finished film, but they are statements of intent and production experience, not independent proof that every goal was achieved. Ford’s wish to avoid empty brutality helps frame the film’s attempt to combine a cruel premise with character feeling. Kermode’s review is useful alongside that intention because it identifies where the result succeeds most clearly and where it falls short: the noirish visual ambition registers, while the central detective does not receive enough development to supply the hoped-for heart.
The director’s comments about risky lighting also align with Kermode’s emphasis on cinematography. That overlap does not establish a consensus, but it does show that the film’s visual identity was deliberate rather than accidental. The interview’s reference to a complex script for the actors also helps explain why the narrative may ask performers to carry several strands and shifts in tone, without guaranteeing that those strands will feel seamless to viewers.

Content advisory: violence, suicide and flashing lights
The British Board of Film Classification lists strong violence, suicide and flashing or flickering lights for DarkGame, along with strong language. Its content advice describes deaths by hanging, shooting, stabbing and bludgeoning, a suicide sequence containing bloody detail, and sustained scenes of threat.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is a source-specific classification advisory, not a recommendation to seek out the film for shock value. It is most useful for viewers deciding whether the subject matter is suitable for them or for people watching with others. The game-show premise places captives under continuous danger, so the threat is not confined to a single brief incident.
- Violence: the BBFC identifies hanging, shooting, stabbing and bludgeoning, including bloody detail.
- Suicide: a sequence includes graphic blood, according to the classification advice.
- Threat: sustained peril is part of the film’s central setup.
- Language: strong language is noted.
- Flashing or flickering lights: viewers sensitive to this effect should take the BBFC warning seriously.
The classification information does not measure how effective the violence is dramatically. Kermode’s review separately raises concerns about the Russian Roulette scenes and the way they relate to the film’s visual appeal. Together, the two sources let you distinguish content intensity from critical quality.

| Studio production | The Bottle Yard Studios | The studio’s portfolio says filming took place there, with additional filming at a Bristol office location arranged by the city’s Film Office team. |
The runtime makes DarkGame a relatively contained commitment. At about one hour and forty-one minutes, it has enough space for a dual narrative but little room for repeated setup. That economy can work in a thriller when every scene advances the investigation or raises the danger. Kermode’s comments about elements appearing and disappearing suggest that the issue is not simply length, but how the available time is allocated.

Watch it if atmosphere is your priority
The strongest case for watching is visual. Kermode finds noirish cinematography and fluid style outside the Russian Roulette scenes, and Ford’s own comments indicate that lighting and noir were deliberate goals. If you enjoy shadow-heavy thrillers, expressive camera movement and a grim premise, those qualities may outweigh the uneven construction.
Watch it if you can accept a fragmented structure
The film’s two-track design may appeal to viewers who like moving between a procedural investigation and a captive’s survival story. The experience is less likely to satisfy if you need the two plots to lock together at every stage. Go in expecting shifts that sometimes interrupt rather than amplify tension.

Skip it if characterization drives your choices
Ben Jacobs is the clearest warning sign in the review. Because Kermode considers him underwritten, viewers who need a richly motivated detective may find the police storyline emotionally slight. The film’s premise gives Katia immediate stakes, but that does not automatically compensate for a lead investigator who remains thinly defined.
Think carefully about the content warnings
The BBFC advisory is substantial. Strong violence, suicide imagery, sustained threat, strong language and flashing or flickering lights are all relevant considerations. The film is not a neutral mystery with occasional peril; brutality is built into the game-show concept.
Where the film is listed
Apple TV has a United States listing for DarkGame. Rotten Tomatoes displayed streaming and rental options when indexed, including Prime Video and Fandango. Those services and listings are time- and territory-dependent, so a viewer should check the destination market and current availability immediately before watching. A listing in the United States does not establish availability in another country.

How to read the review’s overall judgment
Kermode’s assessment is best understood as a qualified recommendation for style, not an endorsement of the film as a fully successful thriller. She sees a promising visual identity and a fluid camera, but also a screenplay that divides its attention without consistently turning that division into suspense. The opening’s masked presenter and live execution communicate the premise’s cruelty; the later structure determines whether that cruelty becomes a compelling dramatic progression, and her view is that it often does not.
That distinction keeps the verdict precise. DarkGame is not dismissed as worthless, nor is it presented as a consensus success. It is a film with a noticeable noir surface, a high-concept dark-web setup and a serious content warning, weakened by disconnected narrative strands and a detective whose characterization does not fully support the investigation. Viewers who make their choices primarily on atmosphere may find enough to appreciate. Viewers who need cumulative plotting and a strong central investigator should approach with caution.
