Yes—the reaction to Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX halftime show was a genuine cultural and social-media event, not just an exaggerated headline. On February 8, 2026, the Puerto Rican artist turned Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, into a fast-moving portrait of Puerto Rico, performing for nearly 13 minutes in a show built around reggaetón, surprise guests, a real wedding, political symbolism and a message of pan-American unity.
The numbers support the “stuns the internet” framing, with an important qualification: Nielsen measured 128.2 million U.S. viewers during the halftime window, while NFL and Ripple Analytics reported about 4 billion social views in the first 24 hours. A later Roc Nation, Apple Music and NFL release reported 4.157 billion worldwide views across broadcast, YouTube and social platforms. Those cross-platform figures are views or consumption counts—not 4.157 billion unique people watching the entire performance. The show was enormously visible, but it was not the highest-rated U.S. halftime performance ever.
What happened during Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show?
The performance began in a sugarcane field with “Tití Me Preguntó,” immediately placing Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rican identity at the center of the biggest entertainment broadcast in the United States. The field then gave way to a succession of reggaetón settings and quick transitions, including “Yo Perreo Sola,” “Safaera,” “Party,” “Voy a Llevarte Pa PR,” “Baile Inolvidable” and “Nuevayol.”
Rather than presenting a conventional parade of hit singles, the production moved like a compressed documentary of Puerto Rican life: agriculture, the home, the street, the neighborhood party, a wedding plaza and the island’s electrical infrastructure. A colorful casita—or little house—became the setting for a house-party sequence featuring celebrity cameos. The staging drew on the visual world of Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rican residency and his Debí Tirar Más Fotos era, according to the NFL’s Spanish-language recap and the Los Angeles Times’ production report.

At one point, Bad Bunny wore a white shirt marked “Ocasio” and “64.” The NFL identified it as a tribute to his uncle “Cutito,” who taught him football and left Puerto Rico at age 17. The detail connected the spectacle to family history rather than treating Puerto Rico as an interchangeable backdrop.
About five minutes into the show, the plaza became the site of an actual marriage ceremony. Lady Gaga then joined Bad Bunny for a salsa-influenced performance of “Die With a Smile,” while Ricky Martin appeared for “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii.” The performance continued through “El Apagón” and “Café con Ron” before arriving at “DtMF” and its final statement about the Americas.
Bad Bunny ended by saying “God Bless America,” naming countries and territories across North, Central and South America, including U.S. territories, and spiking a football labeled “Together, We Are America.” The closing sequence was both a celebratory sports gesture and a challenge to the habit of using “America” as shorthand only for the United States.
Did a real wedding happen during the performance?
Yes. It was not a scripted wedding scene or a visual effect. The Associated Press confirmed through Bad Bunny’s representative that the couple were actually married during the halftime show. They had previously invited Bad Bunny to their wedding; he served as a witness and signed their marriage certificate. The ceremony included a real cake.
The couple’s names and private details were not provided in the cited report, but the confirmation explains why the moment became one of the show’s most searched and shared clips. It also fit the production’s larger emphasis on family, community and ordinary Puerto Rican spaces inside an extraordinary global broadcast. The songs: what was actually performed?
Apple Music published an official companion playlist containing 18 studio tracks associated with the show. It runs for about one hour and seven minutes, so it should not be treated as a frame-by-frame transcript of the nearly 13-minute broadcast. Halftime performances rely on snippets, medleys, transitions, remixes and backing-track references.

Who appeared with Bad Bunny?
The guest list needs to be divided into people who performed music and people who appeared in the production. That distinction matters: a cameo is not the same thing as a duet.

4. The visual world was specific enough to invite interpretation
The field, casita, domino players, piragua vendor, power lines, wedding plaza and flags gave viewers many details to decode. A generic “Latin” theme would likely have produced a less specific conversation. Instead, the show repeatedly pointed back to Puerto Rico and then widened its frame to the Americas.
5. The NFL supplied a powerful distribution machine
NFL and Ripple Analytics reported approximately 4 billion social views in the first 24 hours, up 137% from the previous year. More than 55% of NFL social views came from international markets, according to the league. NFL also said that three clips from the show became the most-viewed posts in its history:

These figures help explain how the show escaped the television broadcast. A viewer did not need to watch all 13 minutes to encounter the wedding, the love message, Gaga, Martin or the final football clip.
What did the symbols mean?
Not every visual element has a publicly confirmed one-to-one explanation from Bad Bunny or the production team. The most responsible reading is to distinguish documented context from expert or critic interpretation.
Puerto Rico as the setting
The field, house, street and plaza created a visual journey through Puerto Rican life. The point was not to decorate the Super Bowl with generic tropical imagery; it was to place Puerto Rican experience on the field and make it the organizing environment of the performance. The Associated Press’ symbolism analysis describes the sequence as a movement through recognizable aspects of Puerto Rican life.
The sugarcane field
The opening sugarcane imagery has been interpreted as a reference to Puerto Rico’s agricultural history and the importance of sugarcane as a historic crop. That reading is documented by AP, but it should remain an attributed interpretation unless the production team offers a more specific explanation.

The casita and house party
The casita connected the performance to Bad Bunny’s recent residency in Puerto Rico and to the domestic, communal spaces associated with Debí Tirar Más Fotos. It made the show feel less like an abstract stadium production and more like a neighborhood gathering—one that happened to include a wedding, celebrities and a global television audience.
Power lines and “El Apagón”
During “El Apagón,” electrical poles and blackout imagery evoked Puerto Rico’s recurring power outages and energy-infrastructure problems. That interpretation has been advanced in critical coverage, including The Guardian’s review. It is stronger than a purely visual guess, but it remains an interpretation of the production rather than a statement that every stage element was officially assigned a single meaning.
The light-blue Puerto Rican flag
Bad Bunny carried a lighter-blue version of the Puerto Rican flag. ABC News quoted a geography professor explaining that shades of blue have acquired political associations: lighter blue is often linked with independence supporters, while darker blue is more commonly associated with statehood supporters. That context helps explain why viewers read political meaning into the flag, but the color alone does not prove a specific declaration by Bad Bunny. “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii”
Ricky Martin’s performance of “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii” added another territorial and political layer. The Guardian interpreted the song as a warning about the gentrification and white tourism associated with Hawaii. That is a critic’s reading of the song’s meaning, not necessarily an official explanation of why the production team chose that specific staging.
“America” beyond the United States
The final roll call was perhaps the show’s clearest political and geographic argument. Bad Bunny named nations across the Americas and included U.S. territories, placing Puerto Rico inside a continent-spanning cultural and geographic community. AP described the moment as a challenge to the U.S.-centric use of “America.” The football’s message—“Together, We Are America”—made the idea explicit without turning it into a conventional campaign speech.
Love as the final message
Near the end, the screen displayed the message “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.” It echoed a line from Bad Bunny’s 2026 Grammy acceptance speech. The connection suggests a consistent theme, but it does not establish a direct endorsement of a particular party, candidate or policy. The show’s politics were expressed through language, territory, imagery and belonging as much as through direct statements.
What did people online say?
There was no single “internet” reaction. The response divided into praise, curiosity, confusion, cultural celebration and political backlash.
The praise
Selena Gomez said the performance moved her family. Kacey Musgraves described it as making her feel proudly American, and Doechii called it historic. Athletes including Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, J.J. Watt, Cam Jordan and Budda Baker also reacted positively. Camila Cabello, j-hope, Rosé, Elmo and other entertainers joined the broader wave of public approval documented by Elle, Forbes and ESPN.

Many Puerto Rican and Latin American viewers celebrated the visibility of Spanish, Puerto Rican music and the performance’s refusal to make cultural specificity secondary to an English-language crossover. For those viewers, the show was not just a concert by a globally successful star; it was a public assertion that Puerto Rican life could be the main event.
The viewers who did not understand every word
Some viewers acknowledged that they could not follow the lyrics but still enjoyed the rhythm, dancing and production. J.J. Watt’s reaction, summarized by ESPN, illustrated that distinction. Not understanding Spanish may limit a viewer’s access to lyrical meaning, but it does not measure the show’s popularity or cultural value. Conversely, enjoying the spectacle does not require pretending that the lyrics and political context do not matter.
The criticism and backlash
Donald Trump criticized the show after it aired, describing it as one of the worst halftime performances and objecting to its language and dancing. Conservative commentators and lawmakers criticized it as anti-American, indecent or inappropriate for children. Turning Point USA promoted an alternative “All-American Halftime Show” featuring Kid Rock and other country performers.
Those objections should not be collapsed into one category. Some people objected to Bad Bunny’s politics. Others objected to hearing Spanish at the Super Bowl. Others focused on sexualized choreography or on the explicit content of his wider catalog. Still others criticized lyrics they believed had aired, even though the broadcast used edited material. These are separate arguments, and a fair account should not use one to imply all the others.

A YouGov survey of 1,063 U.S. adult citizens conducted February 9–11, 2026, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points, found a mixed reaction among halftime-show viewers:

Respondents could select multiple descriptions, so the figures do not add up to 100 percent. The survey does not show unanimous approval, but it does show why “stunned the internet” works better as a description of attention and polarization than as a claim that every viewer loved the show.

U.S. television audience
Nielsen measured an average of 128.2 million U.S. viewers during the 8:15–8:30 p.m. Eastern halftime window. The full Super Bowl averaged 124.9 million viewers. The halftime figure was massive, but Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 halftime show remains higher at 133.5 million viewers, according to ABC News’ report on the Nielsen figures.
That distinction corrects one of the most common misleading headlines. Bad Bunny’s performance was not the most-watched halftime show ever by U.S. Nielsen television measurement. The NFL described Super Bowl LX itself as the second-most-watched Super Bowl, but that is a different record from the halftime-show ranking.
Social views and global consumption
The first-day NFL figure was approximately 4 billion social views, measured with Ripple Analytics. A later release from Roc Nation, Apple Music and the NFL reported 4.157 billion views across global broadcast, YouTube and social platforms. These figures cover different reporting windows and measurement categories, so they should not be added together.
Nor should either number be rewritten as “4 billion people watched.” Cross-platform counts can include repeat views, short clips, partial views, broadcast exposure and different platform counting rules. They demonstrate extraordinary circulation, not a headcount of unique viewers who watched from beginning to end. The NFL’s audience and social report and the later Roc Nation/Apple Music/NFL release should be read with those qualifications.
Streaming and music discovery
Apple Music reported that listening to Bad Bunny rose sevenfold immediately after the show. The tracks most streamed immediately afterward were “DtMF,” “Baile Inolvidable” and “Tití Me Preguntó.” Apple Music also reported more than a 400 percent increase in Shazam recognitions during and immediately after the performance compared with the daily average. The most-Shazamed moments included “Die With a Smile” with Lady Gaga and “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii” with Ricky Martin.
A later official release reported that Bad Bunny placed 24 songs on Apple Music’s Daily Top 100 Global chart, including nine in the Top 25 and six in the Top 10, with “DtMF” at No. 1. His album Debí Tirar Más Fotos appeared on charts in 155 countries, reached the Top 10 in 128 and reached No. 1 in 46.

An initial AP report cited 23 songs in the Daily Top 100 Global chart, nine in the Top 25 and five in the Top 10. The later March 2 release cited 24, nine and six. The later figures should be labeled as the updated report rather than silently merged with the earlier snapshot. The difference likely reflects changing chart windows or revisions, not evidence that one entire account of the show was fabricated.
Apple Music was the halftime-show sponsor, so its streaming and Shazam figures are useful evidence of immediate platform activity but should be attributed to Apple rather than presented as independent, industry-wide audience measurement.

What about the language, politics and FCC complaints?
Bad Bunny’s catalog contains explicit material, and some criticism focused on sex, profanity and choreography. But criticism of the catalog is not proof that the same material aired during the halftime broadcast. The live show was performed almost entirely in Spanish, and later reporting said the broadcast songs had been edited to remove lyrics involving sex acts and genitalia.
Later reports said more than 2,000 complaints were obtained by the FCC, with objections involving sexualized choreography, Spanish-language lyrics and alleged vulgarity. That was a development in the show’s longer news cycle, not a measurement of the overall audience reaction. Reporting from the Los Angeles Times covered the complaints, while NBC Sports later reported that the FCC found no applicable broadcast violations.

That outcome should be stated carefully. The available reporting says no violation was found; it should not be inflated into a claim that the FCC issued a detailed, publicly available ruling declaring every aspect of the show unobjectionable.
Why the performance mattered beyond the clips
Bad Bunny’s halftime show was widely reported as the first solo Latino artist to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. That description should be treated carefully because “Latino,” “Latin,” “Puerto Rican” and “Spanish-language” are not interchangeable categories, and historical records can use different definitions. Even with that qualification, the performance represented a major change in what a mainstream U.S. sports broadcast could place at its center.
It did not ask Puerto Rican identity to appear only as a guest verse or a bilingual flourish. The show made Spanish, reggaetón, Puerto Rican visual culture, territorial politics and pan-American identity part of the main spectacle. At the same time, it remained accessible as a tightly choreographed concert built around rhythm, recognizable guests, visual surprise and a clear emotional arc.
The political dimension was real, but the performance was not only political. It was also about joy, family, dancing, community and the continuity of Puerto Rican music. The wedding made that argument especially clearly: in the middle of a broadcast consumed by hundreds of millions, the show paused for two people’s real-life commitment.

Yes—if “stun” means producing extraordinary attention, rapid cultural circulation and a debate that reached far beyond the stadium. The Nielsen audience, NFL social records, cross-platform viewing figures, immediate streaming increase and documented celebrity reactions provide measurable support. The wedding, Gaga duet, Ricky Martin appearance, final country roll call and “love is more powerful than hate” message supplied highly shareable moments.
But “the internet loved it” would be inaccurate. The YouGov results, political backlash and FCC complaints show a divided response. The better conclusion is that Bad Bunny’s halftime show became unusually difficult to ignore because it was simultaneously a concert, a Puerto Rican cultural showcase, a mainstream Spanish-language milestone, a territorial and political argument about who counts as American, and a social-media event whose backlash amplified its visibility.
