After the summary came to the attention of the Sipekne’katik First Nation, the organization cancelled a performance and later apologized. MacIsaac sued Google in Ontario in February 2026, but the lawsuit was discontinued in July without a reported trial, settlement or explanation.
What the Google AI error said
In December 2025, MacIsaac learned that Google’s automatically generated search summary was associating him with serious sex-offence allegations. Reporting by Global News and Futurism said the summary drew on material about a different person who shared MacIsaac’s surname.

The original AI Overview was not preserved in the reporting reviewed, and Google summaries can change. That means the wording cannot be independently reconstructed from the published accounts. The established issue is the reported mistaken identity, not a finding that MacIsaac committed any offence.
MacIsaac described the consequence in comments quoted by The Globe and Mail and reproduced by Futurism: “Google screwed up, and it put me in a dangerous situation.” He also urged people to check whether search results attach someone else’s information to their name.

Why the performance was cancelled
The organizer’s decision
The Sipekne’katik First Nation, north of Halifax, cancelled a performance after its representatives encountered the false summary. The available reporting establishes that cancellation, but does not quantify lost income, ticket sales, audience exposure or other bookings.
The public apology
In a letter shared with The Globe and Mail and reproduced by Futurism, a First Nation spokesperson said: “We deeply regret the harm this error caused to your reputation, your livelihood, and your sense of personal safety.” The letter added: “It is important to us to state clearly that this situation was the result of mistaken identity caused by an AI error, not a reflection of who you are.”

The apology is a correction by the event organizer. It is separate from any decision Google might make about the search feature and from the later court process.
What Google said
Google Canada spokesperson Wendy Manton told Global News that AI features change frequently. “When issues arise — like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context — we use those examples to improve our systems, and may take action under our policies,” she said.

That statement describes Google’s general approach to reported errors. It does not constitute an admission that Google was legally responsible for MacIsaac’s specific case, nor does the reporting say which corrective action, if any, was taken on this Overview.
Did Ashley MacIsaac sue Google?
Yes. Global News reported in May 2026 that MacIsaac had filed an Ontario civil lawsuit in February. The claim alleged that the AI summary attributed several criminal convictions and registry status to him. Those allegations were pleadings, not findings by a judge, and the reporting did not establish that the statements had been tested in court.

What happened to the lawsuit?
On Aug. 19, 2026, CityNews, in a Canadian Press report, said a notice of discontinuance had been filed on July 29 to end the case. The report gave no reason for the discontinuance.
Discontinuing a lawsuit is not the same as a trial judgment. The available report does not establish a settlement, a Google admission, a court ruling that the summary was lawful, or a judicial declaration clearing or condemning either side. The claims therefore remain unadjudicated in the cited coverage.

What this incident shows about AI search summaries
Name matching is a distinct risk
Search systems can retrieve pages about people who share a surname, and a generated summary can present those details as if they describe one person. In this case, reporting identifies that name confusion as the mechanism behind the false association.
A generated answer is not a verified record
An AI Overview is a synthesis of web material, not an official criminal-history database or a court record. Serious claims about a person should be checked against primary records and reputable reporting before anyone treats an automated summary as fact.
The harm can occur before a correction spreads
The reported cancellation happened after the organizer saw the erroneous information. The sources do not measure how many people viewed the summary or how widely it circulated, but the sequence shows how an unverified generated answer can affect a real-world decision quickly.
How to report a problematic Google result
Google provides a Report a problem form with routes for certain content and product-policy issues as well as legal requests. The help page is general guidance: it does not say which route MacIsaac used and does not guarantee that a particular AI Overview will be removed.

- Check whether the pages cited by the summary concern the same person, place or organization.
- Use Google’s reporting form for the category that fits the problem, including a legal route where appropriate.
- Contact the publisher of any inaccurate source page and, for potentially defamatory claims, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
The status of the story
The reporting establishes one cancelled performance, an apology from the organizer, Google’s general response about improving systems, a civil claim alleging false criminal-history statements, and a later discontinuance. It does not establish the total financial or career impact, the number of people who saw the error, the reason the lawsuit was withdrawn, or a merits decision by a court.
