King Charles III and Queen Camilla left Buckingham Palace in the Ascot Landau for Horse Guards Parade. The Princess of Wales travelled in a second Ascot Landau with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Prince William, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal rode on horseback, while other members of the Royal Family travelled in barouche carriages.

At Horse Guards Parade, the King inspected the guardsmen. The ceremony then paused for a minute’s silence: the Last Post signalled its beginning and the Reveille marked its end. The parade continued with the regiment’s Colour, a march-past and the return procession to Buckingham Palace.
Why were the royals and participants wearing black armbands?
Participants wore black armbands at the King’s request as a mark of respect following the Air India incident in Ahmedabad. Buckingham Palace said the gesture honoured “the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy.”

How many soldiers took part?
The event-specific figure reported by The Associated Press was 1,338 soldiers, including 244 musicians. That number describes the personnel who paraded at the 2025 event after the memorial silence.

Trooping the Colour has marked the British Sovereign’s official birthday for more than 260 years. The established format includes a Royal salute and troop inspection, the processing of a Regimental Colour, a march-past, the return to Buckingham Palace and an RAF flypast viewed from the balcony. A 41-gun salute is also fired in Green Park. These elements provide the ceremony’s traditional framework; they are not all unique developments of 2025.
