Yes—Spotify Free users can now search for and start specific songs instead of relying only on shuffle. In an update published September 15, 2025, Spotify said its Free experience was gaining three named controls: Pick & Play, Search & Play, and Share & Play. The change expands playback choice, but it does not remove the main differences between Free and Premium, including advertising, offline listening and advanced queue controls.
What changed for Spotify Free
Spotify says the September 15, 2025 update is rolling out globally. Its description is straightforward: Free listeners can “search and play any track or jump right into something your friend just shared.” The controls are presented as ways to start listening, not as a promise that Free now has every Premium playback setting.

Pick & Play
Tap play in the Spotify app and choose the song you want to hear. Spotify describes this as the ability to pick and play any song, rather than being limited to an automatically selected track.
Search & Play
Type a track into Spotify’s search, select the result and start it immediately. This is the most direct answer to the question “Can Spotify Free play a specific song?” under the updated experience: Spotify says it can.

When a friend or an artist shares a track on social media, tap the shared song to begin listening in Spotify. The feature is designed for immediate playback from a shared link or post.
Free features that remain useful
Personalized and editorial playlists
Free accounts can listen to personalized playlists and Spotify’s editorial playlists, create their own playlists and shape recommendations by listening and providing feedback. Spotify says daylist updates regularly for Free users around the world, while Discover Weekly refreshes weekly using listening history.

Lyrics and sharing
When lyrics are available for a song, open the mobile Now Playing view and swipe up from the bottom to display them. Spotify says the words scroll line by line in real time. Lyrics can also be shared from the app to Instagram, WhatsApp and other services. These lyric and sharing functions are not presented as Premium-only features.

What the update does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: Free listeners have more direct control when choosing a song, opening a search result or playing a shared track.
- It does not mean: Spotify Free becomes ad-free, gains offline downloads or receives Premium’s complete queue controls.
- It does not mean: Smart Shuffle is fully optional on mobile Free; Spotify’s support page says it remains always active there.
- It does mean: Free users can still use Spotify’s recommendation system, playlists, daylist, Discover Weekly, lyrics and sharing tools.
How to use the new Free controls
- Pick a song from the app: Open Spotify, find a track and use the play control to start the song you selected.
- Search for a track: Open Search, enter the song or artist, choose the result and start playback.
- Play a shared track: Tap a song shared by a friend or artist, then follow the Spotify link or in-app prompt to listen.
- View lyrics: While a song with available lyrics is playing on mobile, open Now Playing and swipe up from the bottom.
Spotify announced the controls as a global rollout, but account behavior can still depend on the app version, device and local rollout state. If a control is missing, update Spotify, reopen the app and check again; the announcement itself does not specify a separate eligibility setting.

Free is now more practical for listeners whose main frustration was being unable to start a particular song. Premium remains the better fit when uninterrupted, downloadable and tightly managed playback matters: Spotify lists ad-free listening, offline downloads, unlimited skips, full next-up control and the ability to play favorites in any order. Premium also offers the documented lossless tier and lets mobile listeners turn off Smart Shuffle.
