Spoiler: the Connections answers
Stop here if you still want to solve the grid yourself. The complete solution is:
| Color | Category | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | LIAISON | AFFAIR, FLING, RELATIONS, THING | Each can describe a connection, relationship or association. |
| Green | SEEN IN A LOCKER ROOM | BENCH, LOCKER, MIRROR, SCALE | All are objects you may find in a locker-room setting. |
| Blue | SOMETHING ENTERED FOR ACCESS | CODE, KEY, PASSWORD, PIN | Each is used to unlock something or authorize entry. |
| Purple | JOHNS | CANDY, CARPENTER, LEGEND, MAJOR | They are surnames of notable people whose given name is John. |
How the groups differ in difficulty
| Group | Relationship type | Solving profile |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Direct semantic association | Usually the most approachable once “liaison” is recognized. |
| Green | Shared physical setting | Concrete objects, although “scale” can look tempting in other categories. |
| Blue | Access and security language | Clear after separating KEY and PIN from the unrelated words. |
| Purple | Cultural and proper-name reference | The most knowledge-dependent: the surnames point to people named John. |
A clean solving path
- Circle the access terms: CODE, KEY, PASSWORD and PIN form a tightly defined security set.
- Look for the room-based objects: BENCH, LOCKER, MIRROR and SCALE all belong in a locker room.
- Use the relationship meaning: AFFAIR, FLING, RELATIONS and THING can all connect through “liaison.”
- Place the leftovers: CANDY, CARPENTER, LEGEND and MAJOR are the surnames in the “Johns” group.
What makes the purple group tricky
The last category is not a definition shared by the words themselves. Candy, Carpenter, Legend and Major become a set only when treated as surnames: John Candy, John Carpenter, John Legend and John Major. That reference-based mechanism is why the group is harder to spot than the literal locker-room and access categories.
