Apps to Watch Movies Together Remotely: Best Options for Netflix, YouTube, Phones, and More

For most people watching Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, or Prime Video on laptops, Teleparty is the simplest starting point. Choose Rave if your group needs native phone, tablet, computer, or TV-style apps; Scener if built-in video chat and a theater-style event matter; SharePlay if everyone uses Apple devices; Discord Watch Together if the movie is on YouTube; and Jellyfin SyncPlay if you are watching a personal media library.

There is no universal watch-party app that works equally well with every streaming service, country, subscription plan, rental, device, and type of video. Most synchronization tools do not provide access to the movie: each viewer usually needs legitimate access to the same title, and the title must be available in the same region. Screen-sharing tools are useful fallbacks, but protected streaming video may appear as a black screen or lose its audio.

This guide reflects the provider documentation linked below and the availability information supplied for 9 August 2026. Features, prices, supported services, and device compatibility can change.

Choose in 30 seconds

1. Watching Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, or Prime Video on desktop browsers? Start with Teleparty.
2. Need video and voice chat in the watch-party experience? Try Scener on Chrome desktop. Its current FAQ says audio and video chat require Premium.
3. Are participants mainly using phones, tablets, Android TV, Google TV, or computers? Try Rave.
4. Is everyone using Apple devices and a supported video app? Use FaceTime SharePlay before installing another service.

The party-size figures sometimes quoted online are provider claims rather than independent tests. Teleparty advertises parties of up to 1,000 participants; Rave advertises no limit on the number of viewers; and Scener’s unlimited theater audience refers to text-chat participants, not unlimited people on video camera. Check the current product pages before planning a large event.

The three ways remote watch parties work

Understanding the technology makes it easier to predict what will work and why a particular app may fail.

1. Playback synchronization

With synchronized playback, each participant receives the movie directly from the original service or media library. The watch-party tool sends commands such as play, pause, seek, and sometimes buffering or re-synchronization instructions.

Examples: Teleparty, Scener, Rave in supported sources, Apple SharePlay, and Jellyfin SyncPlay.

• Advantages: better image quality than a compressed screen share; the streaming service delivers video separately to each viewer; people can usually choose their own subtitle, volume, and accessibility settings.
• Requirements: everyone generally needs access to the same title; the title must be available in every participant’s country; and every browser, app, account plan, and device must be supported.
• Important distinction: the app synchronizes separate streams. It normally does not give friends free access to your Netflix, Max, Disney+, or Prime Video subscription.

Apple’s SharePlay documentation explicitly says that each participant needs access through a subscription or purchase and warns that some content may not work across countries or regions. The practical requirement is similar for Teleparty, Scener, and Rave.

2. Shared or remote browser

A shared-browser service puts a browser session in a room that several people can observe or control. The browser may run on the provider’s servers, rather than independently on every participant’s device.

Examples: Hyperbeam, Kosmi, and some Kast configurations.

• Advantages: it can handle websites that do not have a dedicated watch-party integration; one host can navigate; and voice or video chat may be built into the room.
• Trade-offs: one person’s navigation affects everybody; performance depends on the provider’s infrastructure; login sessions may be processed within a third-party browser environment; and DRM can still block playback.
• Privacy rule: never open banking, email, work accounts, a password manager, or other sensitive pages inside a shared browser.

Hyperbeam describes its service as a multiplayer browser running on its servers. Its terms place responsibility on users to have the necessary rights to share third-party content through the service. Kosmi similarly advertises virtual-browser watch parties, but its claim that it works with broad categories of websites is not a guarantee that every title, region, browser, or DRM system will function.

3. Screen sharing

Screen sharing sends one person’s screen or application to everyone else. Discord, Google Meet, and Kast can be used this way.

• Advantages: it works with local video players, presentations, games, and some unsupported websites; the host may need only one playback source; and it is a useful emergency fallback.
• Disadvantages: protected video may appear black or without audio; the picture is compressed; the host’s computer and upload connection become the bottleneck; and one host’s buffering, pause, or crash affects the entire group.

Google Meet documents the differences between sharing a tab, window, or whole desktop, including tab-audio sharing. That documentation does not guarantee that protected streaming services can be broadcast. Netflix separately documents limitations involving mirroring and certain display paths. Treat screen sharing as a fallback, not a guaranteed way to transmit Netflix, Disney+, Max, or Prime Video.

Best apps and services in detail

Teleparty: best overall for desktop streaming services

Best for: friends or couples watching a supported subscription service from desktop browsers who mainly need synchronized playback and text chat.

Teleparty supports services including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max/HBO Max, Prime Video, YouTube, and other sources listed on its official support page. The exact list, Premium status, and regional availability can change.

Supported devices

Teleparty’s current support information centers on browser extensions for desktop Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. It lists an Android app in beta, but says that iOS, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and other devices are not generally supported. That means a Teleparty recommendation for a laptop should not be presented as a recommendation for an iPhone, Roku, television app, or console.

How to start a Teleparty

1. Install the official extension from Teleparty’s installation page or the relevant official browser extension store.
2. Pin the Teleparty icon if it is hidden in the browser’s extensions menu.
3. Sign in to the streaming service in the browser.
4. Open the movie or episode on the service’s normal website.
5. Start playback. Teleparty’s support instructions require a playable video page before creating the party.
6. Click the red TP button in the browser toolbar.
7. Choose the option to start the party and copy the generated invitation link.
8. Send the link to the group. Each participant installs Teleparty, signs in to the relevant service, opens the invitation, and joins.
9. Use the sidebar for text chat.

Subscriptions, price, and group size

Every participant needs access to the relevant streaming service. A shared account can work only if its plan permits the simultaneous streams required by the group. Teleparty does not provide the film.

Teleparty’s current support page lists a free tier and a Premium tier at $6.59 per month or $3.99 per month billed annually, with the annual total listed as $47.88. It also advertises parties of up to 1,000 participants. Treat both the price and capacity as Teleparty’s current provider claims and recheck them before purchase or a large event.

When Teleparty is the wrong choice

• Someone is watching on an iPhone, smart TV, game console, or unsupported browser.
• The group needs voice or video chat inside the same app.
• The title is a rental or purchase that Teleparty does not support.
• The title is unavailable in one participant’s country.

Teleparty troubleshooting

If the TP button is gray or unavailable, open the supported streaming website directly, start the video, verify that the extension is installed and enabled, pin it to the toolbar, refresh the page, and confirm that the browser and service are supported. Reinstall the extension if necessary. Also check that the title is available in every region and that the participant is not on an unsupported landing page, embedded player, or profile.

Rave: best for phones, tablets, computers, and supported TV platforms

Best for: groups that want a native app experience and text or voice communication across mobile, computer, and supported TV-style devices.

Rave’s FAQ lists YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Max/HBO Max, Twitch, Crunchyroll, Google Drive, Google Photos, and other sources. It lists support for iOS, Android, Chromebook, Android TV, Google TV, Huawei, Windows, and Mac.

How to start a Rave room

1. Install Rave on the chosen device.
2. Open the app and create or join a room.
3. Select the content source.
4. Sign in to the relevant streaming service if prompted.
5. Invite others through a room link or the in-app invitation system.
6. Use Rave’s text or voice chat while watching.

Important restrictions

Rave is free to download, but it does not remove subscription requirements. Everyone generally needs the paid service subscription required by the source. Rave’s FAQ says rented or paid content from YouTube and Amazon is not supported, so do not assume that owning or renting a title automatically makes it playable in Rave.

Videos uploaded through Google Drive or Google Photos may need time to render before they can be watched. Rave advertises no limit on the number of people who can watch together; that is a provider claim, not an independently tested capacity.

Why choose Rave over Teleparty?

Choose Rave when a participant is on Android, iPhone, Android TV, Google TV, or another supported native platform, or when voice chat is more important than the minimal setup of a desktop browser extension. Choose Teleparty when everybody is on a supported desktop browser and the group wants a straightforward text-chat workflow.

Scener: best for video-chat rooms and theater-style events

Best for: private viewing with social features, or a larger event where a host wants a theater-style room.

Scener provides synchronized viewing and text chat. Its current FAQ says that desktop hosting and viewing require Google Chrome and the Scener Chrome Extension.

How to start a Scener party

1. Install the Scener Chrome Extension.
2. Sign in or create a Scener account.
3. Choose Host a watch party.
4. Choose a private room or a larger theater.
5. Select the supported streaming service.
6. Open the movie or episode.
7. Invite participants with the generated room code or link.
8. Use the remote-control function to decide who controls playback.

Scener says that only the person holding the remote controls pause and play until control is passed to another participant. This is useful when a large group would otherwise have too many people competing over playback.

Room versus theater

• Room: private viewing for up to 10 people using video, audio, and text chat.
• Theater: unlimited text-chat participants, with up to 10 co-hosts on camera.

Scener’s current FAQ says that video and audio chat require Scener Premium. Free users can still join and use synchronized viewing and text chat. This is an important correction to older articles that describe Scener’s video chat as free.

Supported services and mobile behavior

Scener’s U.S. FAQ lists YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Max/HBO Max, Hulu, Hotstar, Alamo On Demand, Shudder, and Funimation. This list is geography-dependent, so do not treat it as universal.

Mobile and tablet browsers can chat and view a live host’s theater, but mobile users cannot host or co-host in the same way as desktop users. Watching the streaming content alongside the party from mobile may require a second device and manual synchronization. Scener’s iPhone app supports iOS 15 or later, but with a limited service list and up to four people on camera. It is not a full mobile equivalent of the desktop experience.

Scener troubleshooting

For playback that is out of sync, use Scener’s re-sync control where available. On desktop, use the help control to relaunch the show, or close and reopen the streaming content if it is several seconds behind. Use headphones to prevent audio feedback, restart Chrome if camera or microphone permissions fail, and check VPN or firewall settings if the room cannot connect.

FaceTime SharePlay: best for Apple-only groups

Best for: people already using iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV with a video app that supports SharePlay.

SharePlay synchronizes supported movies, shows, music, and live events during a FaceTime call. It is integrated into the Apple TV app and other compatible apps, but SharePlay is not a universal layer for every streaming service.

How to use SharePlay on iPhone or iPad

1. Start a FaceTime or Group FaceTime call.
2. Tap More.
3. Tap SharePlay.
4. Choose a supported video app, such as the Apple TV app.
5. Select the movie or show.
6. Tap Play and then SharePlay, if prompted.
7. Other participants tap Join SharePlay or Open.

Playback controls are generally synchronized, while each viewer can use separate volume and subtitle settings. Apple says a SharePlay session started on an iPhone can be sent to an Apple TV 4K using AirPlay, with the conversation continuing on the iPhone.

Access and region requirements

Each participant needs access to the title through a subscription or purchase. Some apps require their own subscriptions, and some titles cannot be shared across countries or regions. The device must also meet the individual app’s requirements.

Max provides an additional example of app-specific restrictions: its SharePlay documentation says participants need an Apple device, a Standard or Platinum plan in the applicable market, an adult Max profile, and a title available to everyone. Do not infer from FaceTime support alone that every Max plan or title supports SharePlay.

Discord: best for YouTube communities and voice-first groups

Best for: groups that already use Discord and are watching a YouTube video, public-domain film, trailer, documentary upload, or another public video available on YouTube.

Discord Watch Together is YouTube-specific

Discord’s native Watch Together activity is a collaborative YouTube playlist. It synchronizes YouTube playback and lets participants add or control videos. It is not a native Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, or Prime Video watch-party feature.

How to launch Watch Together

1. Open a Discord voice channel, direct message, or group message.
2. Launch an Activity using the App Launcher or Activities button.
3. Choose Watch Together.
4. Search for a YouTube video or paste a YouTube link.
5. Add videos to the shared playlist.
6. Keep host controls locked if only one person should control playback, or enable shared controls if everyone should be able to add and control videos.

Playback limits

Discord’s current FAQ states that group viewing is limited to 180 minutes of playback. Individual viewing is limited to 30 minutes, followed by a 10-minute cooldown. Other viewers may continue while one person is in cooldown. This matters for a long documentary, a double feature, or a marathon.

Discord screen sharing

Discord also allows screen sharing in voice chats and documents support for up to 50 people sharing video or a screen at a time in a voice chat. That does not mean a commercial stream will appear correctly. DRM and capture restrictions can still produce a black screen or missing audio. Use screen sharing for personal files, public video, or other content that the provider permits you to share, rather than treating it as a way around a streaming service’s protection.

Hyperbeam and Kosmi: fallbacks for unsupported websites

Best for: a website that ordinary synchronization extensions do not support, provided the group accepts a shared-browser architecture.

Hyperbeam

Hyperbeam provides a shared multiplayer browser where participants can visit websites, pass control, create playlists, chat, and use audio or video calling. It is useful when one host needs to navigate an unusual website or web application.

It is not the same as giving everybody an independent local stream. One person’s navigation can affect the entire room, and the service’s infrastructure becomes part of the playback path. Do not open sensitive accounts in the shared browser. Review Hyperbeam’s privacy policy and terms, particularly the requirement that users have the necessary rights to share third-party content.

Kosmi

Kosmi advertises browser-based rooms with Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, Twitch, video URLs, video chat, and private rooms, and says its shared-browser approach does not require a traditional browser extension.

These are provider descriptions, not a guarantee that every website will play. Streaming-service login behavior, DRM, regional catalogues, browser compatibility, and performance vary. Read Kosmi’s privacy policy before signing in to a service inside a shared environment. For a mainstream service with a supported Teleparty, Scener, Rave, or SharePlay integration, independent local playback is usually the more predictable and privacy-conscious model.

Watch2Gether and watch.party: strong for public video and community rooms

Watch2Gether

Watch2Gether provides rooms, synchronized playback, chat, playlists, and support for public sources including YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, and SoundCloud. It is a good fit for public documentaries, music, trailers, and other supported video sources. Its website also advertises apps and TV-platform availability, but verify exact device support before relying on a particular television or set-top box.

Do not present Watch2Gether as a universal Netflix or Prime Video solution unless its current source list explicitly confirms the service for your location and device.

watch.party

watch.party advertises synchronized video, music, and podcasts from YouTube, Twitch, SoundCloud, and user-provided files. It also lists chat, voice and video calls, screen sharing, games, web access, mobile installation, and Discord embedding. It is most useful for a host-controlled queue or a social room built around public video, music, podcasts, or permitted personal files.

Jellyfin SyncPlay: best for a personal media library

Best for: people who own or manage the media and already operate a Jellyfin server.

Jellyfin SyncPlay synchronizes play, pause, seeking, and buffering behavior for users watching the same item from a shared Jellyfin library. It requires a Jellyfin server, participants with access to that server, SyncPlay enabled, compatible clients, and the same media item available to everyone.

Because Jellyfin is an actively changing self-hosted project, use the current Jellyfin documentation for version-specific setup and client instructions. This is a better privacy and ownership fit than a shared browser when the group is watching legally acquired personal media, but it is not a way to stream a Netflix or Prime Video title.

Plex Watch Together: use only after checking the current client

Plex appears in many older watch-party lists, but its status has changed. Plex’s official support article says that, as of 25 February 2025, Watch Together was being removed from most platforms as the new Plex experience rolled out, while the web app could continue supporting it for the foreseeable future.

Therefore, describe Plex as conditional and platform-dependent, not as a generally reliable solution for smart TVs, phones, consoles, and computers. Confirm that the web app or specific client you plan to use still supports the feature before organizing the event. Plex has also announced changes to remote personal-media streaming on supported smart-TV devices: beginning 23 March 2026, remote streaming there requires a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass according to its announcement.

Which app should you use for each service?

Netflix

• Desktop: start with Teleparty; Scener is an alternative if you need a room and text chat, with audio and video chat requiring Premium.
• Phone or supported TV-style device: consider Rave.
• Apple devices: SharePlay works only through a compatible video app and title, not simply because the device supports FaceTime.
• Discord: do not assume screen sharing will work. Netflix or the browser may block capture or audio.

Disney+

Teleparty, Rave, Scener, and supported SharePlay integrations are possible choices, but confirm the title, region, plan, and device before the event. A Disney+ title available to one participant may not be available in another country.

Max

Teleparty, Rave, and Scener are the main third-party choices in the supplied documentation. SharePlay has Max-specific requirements: Apple device, applicable Standard or Platinum plan, adult profile, and a title available to all participants. Check the current Max help page before relying on it.

Prime Video

Teleparty, Rave, and Scener may support subscription titles in their documented environments. Treat rentals and purchases separately: Rave’s FAQ specifically excludes rented or paid Amazon content, and other tools may impose their own restrictions. Shared-browser options can be a fallback, but they introduce DRM, privacy, and terms-of-service concerns.

YouTube

Use Discord Watch Together if the group already lives in Discord. Use Watch2Gether for a simple browser room and playlist, or watch.party for a room with broader social features. Rave is another option when the group prefers a native app.

Personal files

Use Jellyfin SyncPlay when the file is in a shared Jellyfin library. Plex is possible only after confirming current web-app or client support. For a local file that is not protected by commercial DRM, an approved screen share or synchronized local playback with a voice call can be a practical fallback.

The phrase works on mobile is too vague to be useful. Ask whether mobile users can host, join, watch the actual video, chat, and control playback. In Scener’s case, those capabilities are not equivalent between desktop and mobile. In Teleparty’s case, an Android beta does not mean iPhone, iPad, or TV support.

Everyone needs access to the movie

A watch-party app is usually a synchronization and communication layer, not a movie library. Before sending an invitation, confirm all of the following:

• Everybody can independently start the title outside the watch-party app.
• Everyone is using the same service and has the required subscription, purchase, or rental.
• The title is available in every participant’s country or region.
• The subscription tier permits the number of simultaneous streams being used.
• The title is not blocked by an age restriction, profile type, device restriction, or parental-control setting.
• The watch-party app supports that particular type of access. A subscription title, rental, and purchased title may be treated differently.

Do not share a streaming password merely to help somebody join. If an account is shared, the account holder must comply with the provider’s plan and household rules, including simultaneous-stream limits. The safest workflow is for each viewer to use their own legitimate access.

Troubleshooting: fix the common failures

The party link does not open

1. Confirm that the invitation has not expired and that the recipient is signed in to the correct account.
2. Open the service’s normal website or app and verify that the title plays independently.
3. Check that the recipient installed the official app or extension, not an unrelated copy.
4. Try a private room rather than a public or theater room if the service offers both.
5. Disable a conflicting VPN, ad blocker, or browser extension temporarily for diagnosis, then restore privacy and security tools where possible.

The movie plays for one person but not another

The usual causes are different regional catalogues, a missing subscription tier, a rental or purchase unsupported by the app, a simultaneous-stream limit, an unsupported browser or device, or an age-restricted profile.

Have both viewers start the title outside the party first. Confirm the same service, country, plan, title, and profile type. If necessary, test with a title known to be available to everyone, then switch to a native integration or SharePlay if that source supports it.

The Teleparty TP button is gray

1. Open the supported streaming service directly.
2. Start the movie or episode rather than stopping on a catalogue or promotional page.
3. Confirm that the extension is installed, enabled, and pinned.
4. Refresh the page.
5. Check the supported browser and service list.
6. Reinstall or update the extension if the button remains unavailable.

Scener is out of sync

Use Scener’s re-sync control where available, or use its help control to relaunch the show on desktop. Close and reopen the streaming content if the delay is several seconds. Confirm that everybody selected the same title and service, restart Chrome if camera or microphone permissions have stopped working, and check VPN or firewall interference. Headphones will prevent audio feedback from making the delay harder to diagnose.

Rave will not play the title

Check whether the source is a rented or paid YouTube or Amazon title, whether every viewer has the necessary subscription, whether a Google Drive or Google Photos upload is still rendering, and whether the device appears in Rave’s supported-platform list.

The screen share is black

A black screen usually indicates DRM, a protected playback path, browser capture restrictions, or an unsupported mirroring method. Stop the share and try a browser tab rather than the entire desktop where appropriate. Confirm that tab or system audio sharing is enabled, and test with a public YouTube video.

If YouTube works but the subscription service is black, do not keep trying to defeat the protection. Use a supported synchronization integration instead. Netflix’s display and mirroring guidance and the documentation for Discord screen sharing explain why screen capture cannot be assumed to work.

There is an echo or duplicate audio

• Everyone should use headphones.
• Mute microphones when not speaking.
• Choose one audio-chat service rather than running the watch-party audio and a second voice call at the same time.
• Do not play the same sound through speakers and a nearby microphone.

Scener specifically recommends headphones or muting audio to eliminate feedback.

Subtitles or audio tracks do not match

Subtitle languages, audio tracks, accessibility settings, and even cuts of a title can differ by country, plan, or app. In a synchronized-playback system, each viewer can often choose local subtitle and volume settings, but the underlying video still needs to be the same.
