Apple’s Clean Up ad shows why you should think twice before removing something from a photo

Apple’s “Apple Intelligence: Clean Up Photos: Cat” is a short, comic advertisement published on July 17, 2025. In it, a man removes a woman’s cat from a photo using the Photos app’s Clean Up tool—then quickly reverses the edit when the woman and her pet object.

The joke is simple: removing an object from a picture may be technically easy, but that does not mean it is socially wise. The commercial also demonstrates that Clean Up edits can be undone.

The official advertisement is titled “Apple Intelligence: Clean Up Photos: Cat | iPhone 16”. It is a product advertisement rather than a tutorial or a standalone short film.

The central product is the iPhone 16’s Photos app, specifically Apple Intelligence’s Clean Up feature.

What happens in the commercial?

  1. A man photographs a woman sitting with her cat.
  2. He opens the image in Photos.
  3. He uses Clean Up to remove the cat from the picture.
  4. The edited image retains the woman but reconstructs the background where the pet was.
  5. The woman and cat react negatively.
  6. He reverses the edit, restoring the original composition.

Apple communicates the feature almost entirely through the visual gag. The cat is not a distracting street sign or an unwanted passerby; it is an important part of the subject’s life. The result makes the distinction between removable and unwanted immediately clear.

What Apple’s Clean Up tool actually does

Clean Up is an Apple Intelligence editing tool in Photos. It allows a user to select an object or distraction, after which the software generates replacement image content based on the surrounding scene. Apple introduced it with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 in October 2024. Its stated purpose is to remove visual distractions while preserving the intended scene.

That is different from deleting a person, pet or object from the photo library. Clean Up changes the appearance of the image itself; it does not erase the original subject from the user’s library or from reality. The edit can also be reconsidered through Photos’ editing workflow, as the advertisement illustrates.

Which devices support Clean Up?

Clean Up is not an iPhone 16-only feature. Apple lists support for:

  • iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16 models
  • iPad models with A17 Pro or M1 and later
  • Mac models with Apple silicon, beginning with M1

The baseline software requirements are iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 or macOS Sequoia 15.1, depending on the device. Apple notes that requirements vary by region. In the European Union, the support page specifies iOS 18.4 or later and iPadOS 18.4 or later for supported iPhones and iPads; supported Macs require macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. Apple also lists restrictions affecting devices purchased in, or users located in, mainland China. Check Apple’s current regional requirements before troubleshooting a missing feature.

Is Clean Up free?

Clean Up was introduced as part of a compatible operating-system update, not as a separately purchased app or subscription. You still need supported hardware and software, so owners of older devices may need new hardware to use it.

Apple’s 2026 announcements discuss broader access to some server-based Apple Intelligence features through iCloud+ plans. They do not establish that iCloud+ is required for the basic Clean Up workflow, so buying iCloud+ solely for this feature is not justified by the available information.

Will Clean Up always produce a perfect result?

No. The commercial shows one carefully chosen successful edit; it is not a performance test or a guarantee.

Clean Up is generally a better fit for small distractions such as litter, wires, signs or distant passersby, especially against a simple background. Results can be less convincing when the software must reconstruct a large area or deal with:

  • Objects overlapping faces, hands, animals or important text
  • Complicated textures, reflections, shadows or transparent materials
  • Repeating patterns and straight lines
  • Low-resolution or heavily compressed images
  • Large foreground subjects

Look closely for distorted faces, broken edges, repeated patterns, implausible shadows and unreadable text. Keep the original available and use the edit as a polished image—not automatically as an accurate record of what was photographed.

What has changed since the advertisement?

In June 2026, Apple announced a next-generation Apple Intelligence update for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 that includes an upgraded Clean Up tool with better-quality, more realistic infill. Apple said those software features would arrive in fall 2026. That announcement describes a forthcoming generation of the feature; it should not be treated as proof that every improvement was already available when the 2025 advertisement was published.

  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

The original advertisement remains a demonstration of the earlier Clean Up experience on supported devices.

The broader lesson behind the joke

Removing an object is not merely a technical decision. A pet, person, sign or background detail may carry meaning even when it appears visually inconvenient. A clean-looking image can therefore be misleading if the edit changes what happened or who was present.

For casual social photos, that may be harmless. For journalism, documentary work, historical records or evidence, removing content can alter the image’s meaning and should be disclosed—or avoided altogether.

Apple’s ad works because it presents both sides of the feature in seconds: Clean Up can remove a prominent object with minimal effort, and the result can be reversed when the edit goes too far. It is a persuasive demonstration of convenience, not proof that AI image reconstruction is flawless.
