Apple released Big Man on June 18, 2025: a roughly 20-minute fictional short film starring Michael “Stormzy” Omari and shot entirely on iPhone 16 Pro. Directed by Aneil Karia and produced with Somesuch and #Merky Films, it uses a character-led story to demonstrate what Apple’s phone camera can do in a serious narrative production.

Watch the complete film on Apple’s official YouTube channel. It was premiered by Apple at 8 p.m. BST on June 18, 2025. The film should be understood as a branded narrative short rather than a conventional product commercial.
Apple also released behind-the-scenes material about the production. The official announcement and video provide the clearest account of how the iPhone 16 Pro was used.
What is Big Man about?
Stormzy plays Tenzman, a musician who has become disconnected from the energy and optimism that once shaped his life and work. An encounter with two industrious children sends him into an unexpected journey and gradually restores a sense of warmth, spontaneity and creative possibility.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
The story gives Apple a way to present camera features through atmosphere, performance and movement instead of a conventional list of specifications. Secondary coverage described the film as approximately 20 minutes long; Apple’s newsroom announcement did not specify an official runtime.
Cast and creative team
- Lead actor: Michael “Stormzy” Omari, performing as Stormzy, as Tenzman
- Director: Aneil Karia, whom Apple identified as an Academy Award-winning director
- Director of photography: Stuart Bentley
- Production companies: Somesuch and #Merky Films
Apple described Stormzy in promotional terms as a UK music legend. That wording belongs to Apple’s presentation rather than serving as an independent credit or qualification. Karia’s other work has included Surge and The Long Goodbye, according to secondary coverage.
How was it filmed on iPhone 16 Pro?
Apple said the film was shot entirely on iPhone 16 Pro and highlighted several capabilities:

- Cinematic mode: used for a blurred background and foreground effect and for focus transitions.
- Apple ProRes Log: provided greater flexibility for post-production and color work.
- Low-light capture: used for scenes outdoors at night, in arcades and in dark music studios.
Secondary coverage also highlighted Camera Control, playback-speed adjustments and Audio Mix. Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro technical specifications provide the relevant product details.

The exact equipment list was not disclosed. Apple’s statement does not establish how many phones were used or whether the production relied on additional lenses, cages, gimbals, monitors, lighting equipment, external recorders or dedicated microphones. It also does not identify the editing, grading or sound-mixing software.
Why use a phone for a narrative film?
Karia said the phone’s smaller size and flexibility helped him pursue intimacy with the characters. Bentley described it as a portable camera with cinematic tools, dynamic range, low-light capability, Cinematic mode and ProRes Log options.
That choice has a practical creative logic. A smaller camera can be less intrusive around performers, while lightweight equipment can help a crew move quickly between locations. Computational features may also reduce some traditional-camera setup requirements. In Big Man, the relevant test is not whether a phone can produce an isolated impressive shot, but whether it can support a sustained story involving performances, changing locations, movement and difficult lighting.

What does “shot entirely on iPhone” mean?
It refers specifically to image capture. It does not mean the phone replaced the director, cinematographer, actors, lighting team, sound department, production designers, editors or colorists.

The distinction matters. The film demonstrates that an iPhone 16 Pro can be integrated into a professionally managed narrative production. It does not prove that the handset alone created the finished result or that an ordinary user will automatically achieve the same appearance by selecting the same recording settings.
Nor does Apple’s wording confirm that audio was recorded directly on the phone, that all stabilization and monitoring happened on-device, or that post-production took place on an iPhone. Those parts of the workflow were not fully detailed in the announcement.
What the film demonstrates—and what it does not
Big Man is a strong demonstration of portability, high-frame-rate recording, software-assisted focus effects and the flexibility of Log capture. It also shows that low-light scenes can be incorporated into a polished production. But the official account confirms that the scenes were made possible, not that the iPhone matched a dedicated cinema camera in every measure of dynamic range, noise, lens control or handling.
Cinematic mode can create a convincing stylized focus effect, but it is not identical to the optical depth-of-field control of a cinema camera. ProRes Log preserves grading flexibility; it does not make footage cinematic without correct color management, lighting and post-production. Similarly, YouTube compression can obscure differences between original capture formats.

Could an ordinary filmmaker reproduce it?
An iPhone 16 Pro can provide a capable starting point, but the phone is only one part of the production. Anyone attempting a comparable short should plan for:
- Lighting: especially for night interiors and controlled exposure.
- Sound: professional dialogue recording and sound design should not be inferred from the phone’s camera claims.
- Stabilization and support: handheld, tripod, gimbal and rig choices affect the final image.
- Focus: Cinematic mode’s automatic decisions may not always select the intended subject, so focus should be monitored and shots may need to be repeated.
- Storage and heat: 4K/120fps and ProRes footage can consume substantial storage and increase battery and heat demands during long sessions.
- Post-production: Log footage requires an appropriate color workflow, while high-resolution material requires a capable editing and transfer setup.
- Delivery: the final platform, export settings and compression influence what viewers ultimately see.
These considerations are why the film should be treated as evidence of creative potential, not a promise of effortless cinema-quality results.

Big Man belongs to Apple’s ongoing “Shot on iPhone” series, which uses finished creative work to demonstrate camera capabilities. Longer, narrative-led projects make the product demonstration more emotionally engaging than a standard feature advertisement: viewers see slow motion, focus effects, low-light scenes and flexible image capture serving a story.

Karia said this was his first entire narrative filmmaking project shot on an iPhone. That should not be expanded into a claim that Big Man was Apple’s first narrative iPhone film. Apple’s announcement does not make that broader claim.

Should you buy an iPhone 16 Pro to make films?
If the goal is specifically to use the same model associated with Big Man, consult Apple’s current iPhone buying page and technical specifications. Prices, configurations and availability change, and the iPhone 16 Pro’s availability may differ by market in 2026.
Buying the same phone will not reproduce Apple’s production. For editing, Mac users can review Final Cut Pro or Apple’s Apple Creator Studio, which Apple positions as part of a broader workflow involving Final Cut Camera, iPad and Mac. Check current system requirements and pricing before subscribing or purchasing. These tools should not be assumed to have been used on Big Man; Apple has not confirmed that.
Verdict
Big Man is notable less because it suggests an iPhone can replace an entire film crew and more because it shows how a compact camera can be built into a serious narrative production. Stormzy’s performance, Karia’s direction and Bentley’s cinematography give the camera demonstration a genuine story to serve. The result is a persuasive showcase of what the iPhone 16 Pro can contribute—provided viewers remember that professional filmmaking remains a collaborative process.
