Yes. Amazon Freevee was the renamed IMDb TV service. Amazon announced the change on April 13, 2022, and said the rebrand would begin April 27. Freevee later stopped operating as a standalone brand: Amazon deprecated it in early 2025 and moved its free, ad-supported programming into Prime Video.
Freevee and IMDb TV were the same streaming service
Freevee was not a new streaming business replacing IMDb TV. It was the same Amazon-owned, ad-supported service under a new name, logo and position within Amazon’s streaming portfolio. The service continued offering films, television programs, originals and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels.
The name change applied to the streaming product, not to IMDb itself. IMDb remains Amazon’s movie, television and celebrity-information database. An IMDb page can provide facts, ratings and credits; it is not the Freevee streaming service.
Amazon’s own announcement described Freevee as a free, ad-supported video-on-demand service and explained that the new name made its no-subscription proposition clearer. Amazon’s 2022 announcement also connected the service more directly with Amazon’s wider video business.

The service’s name, from launch to integration
| Period | Name | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| January 2019 | IMDb Freedive | The initial launch of Amazon’s free streaming service. |
| June 2019 | IMDb TV | The first rebrand. |
| April 27, 2022 | Amazon Freevee | The second rebrand; Amazon announced it on April 13. |
| Early 2025 | Freevee deprecated | Its free programming was incorporated into Prime Video. |
The IMDb Freedive-to-IMDb TV history is documented in IMDb’s historical announcement coverage. Amazon’s quarterly results also record April 27, 2022, as the date IMDb TV became Freevee. Some secondary references describe the public rollout as April 28, so “announced April 13, with the rebrand beginning April 27” is the clearest formulation.
What changed in 2022—and what did not
The name and branding changed
“IMDb TV” became “Amazon Freevee.” The new label reduced the apparent connection to IMDb’s information database and made “free” part of the service’s identity. That was a branding and positioning change, not the creation of a separate platform.

The free-with-ads model remained
Viewers did not need a Prime subscription to watch Freevee. Programming was financed by advertising, so the service was free to access but not ad-free. This differed from Prime-included video, paid rentals and purchases, and separately subscribed Prime Video Channels.
The catalogue and distribution expanded
At the time of the rebrand, Amazon described licensed movies and shows, Freevee Originals and more than 60 FAST channels. It also announced plans to expand its originals slate by 70% during 2022, citing programs including Bosch: Legacy, Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis, Sprung, Troppo and High School. Those were 2022 plans, not a guarantee that the same titles or channel count remain available today. Amazon also discussed expansion into Germany after earlier availability in the United States and United Kingdom.

What happened to Freevee after the rebrand?
Freevee was later consolidated into Prime Video. Amazon Ads says the standalone brand was deprecated in early 2025 and that its free television, movie and FAST-channel offering was subsumed within Prime Video. The practical result is a three-part history:
- IMDb TV was the earlier name of the service.
- Freevee was its 2022–2025 name as a distinct brand.
- The free programming is now presented inside Prime Video rather than through a separate Freevee destination.
This does not mean every title that once appeared on Freevee is permanently available. Licensing, territory rights and catalogue rotation can remove a film, series or channel, or change whether it is free.

How to watch the former Freevee programming now
Amazon’s current destination is Prime Video’s free, ad-supported area, often labelled Watch for free. Amazon says both Prime and non-Prime customers can access this programming. Interface labels differ by country, device, operating-system version and account, so there is no single guaranteed menu path.
- Open the Prime Video app or visit the Prime Video website.
- Look for titles marked free, Watch for free or free with ads.
- Check the title page before playing. A rental, purchase or paid-channel prompt means that item is not part of the free catalogue for your account.
- If a former Freevee title is missing, search Prime Video directly; availability may have changed because of licensing or regional rights.
Seeing an old Freevee label in a television guide, screenshot, cached app screen or search result does not establish that Amazon still maintains a separate Freevee service.

IMDb, Freevee and Prime Video compared
| Product | What it is | Is a paid subscription required? |
|---|---|---|
| IMDb | Amazon’s movie, television and celebrity-information database. | No for basic database access. |
| Freevee | The former name of Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming brand. | No, historically; the standalone brand is now deprecated. |
| Prime Video | A broader platform combining free ad-supported programming, Prime-included titles, rentals, purchases, live content and paid channels. | Depends on the specific title or feature. |
Prime Video therefore contains several business models in one interface. A title appearing in the app is not automatically free, and “free” means free to watch with advertising rather than commercial-free viewing.
AVOD, FAST and the difference from Prime Video
AVOD means advertising-supported video on demand: viewers do not pay a subscription fee but see advertisements. FAST means free ad-supported streaming television, generally channel-like streams with scheduled programming. SVOD means subscription video on demand.
Freevee was Amazon’s dedicated AVOD and FAST brand. Prime Video is a larger platform that also includes subscription content, rentals, purchases, live television, sports and paid channels. Amazon now places the free AVOD/FAST offering inside that broader platform.
Why viewers still encounter the name Freevee
- Older articles, screenshots and television guides continue to use the former brand.
- Some devices or partner listings may retain cached or legacy labels.
- Amazon’s interface changes roll out differently by territory and device.
- Search results can preserve historical references long after a brand is retired.
Those references describe the service’s recent history, not proof of a currently maintained standalone Freevee app or website.
Bottom line
Amazon Freevee was the new name for IMDb TV, which itself began as IMDb Freedive. The April 2022 rebrand preserved the free-with-ads model and separated the streaming identity from IMDb’s database. Amazon deprecated the standalone Freevee brand in early 2025, but its free programming continues inside Prime Video for Prime and non-Prime viewers, subject to advertising, regional rights and catalogue rotation.
