The report described a limited test, not a confirmed rollout. As of August 18, 2026, YouTube’s public Help pages still do not document that behavior as a standard Android control.
What the reported Android test did
In a report dated November 11, 2024, Neowin said some Android users saw a downward swipe in the fullscreen player advance to another video rather than minimize or exit the player. The account was based on an individual user’s observation, not a YouTube announcement, release note, or named experiment. The report did not establish the app version, whether it worked in portrait and landscape, or how the next video was selected. Read the original report.
The same coverage said the behavior had not been observed on iOS or iPadOS. That is a report about what had been seen at the time, not proof that no iPhone or iPad user ever encountered it.
Why the gesture could be useful—and why it could frustrate viewers
A vertical swipe to move between videos would resemble the navigation pattern people already know from Shorts. It could make continuous viewing quicker, particularly if reaching an on-screen Next control is awkward. That is a plausible design rationale, not a reason YouTube has publicly given for the test.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Predictability: Viewers who use a swipe to leave fullscreen may trigger an unintended video change instead.
- Duplicate controls: The player may already offer a Next control, so a new gesture could add convenience without adding a capability.
- Large screens: On tablets and large phones, a swipe can be easier than reaching controls, but losing a familiar way to leave fullscreen may be more noticeable.
- Different meanings: The result could depend on whether a video is in a playlist, whether another item is available, the player state, and whether an account is included in an experiment.
The report does not establish how the gesture would behave with autoplay off, at the end of a playlist, during an ad or live stream, or when player overlays are visible. Those cases should not be assumed to work alike.
What YouTube documents for fullscreen now
YouTube’s Android Help page describes different controls by orientation. In portrait orientation, it says to swipe down below the player to enter fullscreen and swipe up to exit. In landscape, it documents tapping the fullscreen control to exit. It does not list a swipe-down-to-next-video control. See YouTube’s Android fullscreen instructions.

The documented iPhone and iPad gestures differ: in horizontal orientation, users can tap the fullscreen control or swipe down on the video to exit; in portrait orientation, YouTube says to swipe up. That page also does not describe swiping down to play the next standard video. See YouTube’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
On desktop, YouTube documents exiting fullscreen by clicking the fullscreen icon or double-clicking the video. It also says viewers can scroll while fullscreen to see comments and videos queued next. These desktop controls are separate from the reported Android app test. See YouTube’s desktop fullscreen instructions.

The Help pages are a guide to documented controls, not proof that an account-specific experiment never existed. They also do not establish how YouTube’s mobile website behaves. The report concerned the Android app; it did not report a change to Shorts or to Android’s operating-system navigation gestures.
How to check what your Android app does
- Open the YouTube Android app and play an ordinary long-form video, not a Short.
- Enter fullscreen, then swipe down once within the player. Note whether it exits or minimizes, advances to another video, changes to another player state, or does nothing.
- Repeat in portrait and landscape orientation, then restart the app and try again.
This check can tell you how your app behaves now; it cannot reproduce or confirm the 2024 test. Results may differ by app build, account experiment, orientation, or player state. A swipe near the screen edge may also invoke an Android system gesture; that is distinct from a gesture handled inside YouTube’s player.

What to do if swiping down advances a video
The cited YouTube Help material does not identify a setting to disable a swipe-down-to-next-video behavior. If you see it, that does not establish that the same control is available to every account, or that a user-facing switch exists.
- Use the visible fullscreen button when you want to leave the player and the swipe result is uncertain.
- Use the player’s Next control or a playlist or Up Next panel when you want to choose the following video deliberately.
- If unwanted continuation is the concern, turn off autoplay in YouTube’s playback settings. Autoplay controls automatic continuation; the available evidence does not establish that it would block a manually triggered next-video gesture.
- Check the app version and try again after restarting it. Updating or reinstalling may not change an account-side experiment.
- If the behavior seems broken rather than intentional, send feedback through YouTube’s in-app feedback tools.
Downgrading or sideloading an older app is not a reliable general fix and can create security, compatibility, and account problems. Accessibility services such as TalkBack, magnification, or custom gesture tools may also change how touch input is handled; if you use one, test with it enabled rather than assuming the player gesture will behave normally.

What is known about a wider rollout
The available reporting establishes that a limited Android test was observed; it does not establish whether YouTube later completed, canceled, or expanded it. YouTube’s public Android instructions, as of August 18, 2026, do not confirm a universal swipe-down-to-next-video control. The careful conclusion is that YouTube explored the interaction, but a platform-wide rollout is not established.
