A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is a 2025 English-language romantic fantasy directed by Kogonada and written by Seth Reiss. Margot Robbie plays Sarah and Colin Farrell plays David, two single strangers who meet at a wedding and are drawn into an impossible road trip guided by mysterious GPS systems and freestanding doors.

Those doors lead not to a conventional alternate timeline, but to emotionally important moments from Sarah’s and David’s pasts. The film is now available digitally in the United States, with subscription availability also listed on Netflix in the latest U.S. checks. It is a visually ambitious, slow-burn film that has divided critics: viewers who enjoy mood, metaphor, grief, and unusual romances may find it rewarding, while anyone expecting a fast or joke-heavy romantic comedy may find it too solemn and under-explained.

Spoiler warning: The sections below explain the doors, the characters’ memories, the ending, and the reported credits scenes.

What is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey about?

Sarah and David meet at a mutual friend’s wedding. They are attracted to each other, but neither is emotionally prepared to move easily into a new relationship. David still hopes that connection is possible, even though rejection and disappointment have made him afraid of failing again. Sarah is more openly skeptical and self-protective; her experience has taught her to expect intimacy to end in pain.

After a series of strange encounters, both characters become associated with old rental cars containing unusual, seemingly sentient GPS systems. The systems lead them toward isolated doors that appear in ordinary locations and landscapes. When Sarah or David walks through one, the door opens into a defining memory or emotionally significant moment from that person’s past.

The journey gradually changes the film’s question. At first, it seems to ask whether two strangers will fall in love. Eventually, it asks why two people who want connection have spent so much of their adult lives avoiding it. The doors bring them face to face with grief, family history, romantic rejection, regret, guilt, and the stories they have constructed about themselves.

This is not a standard time-travel adventure. Sarah and David do not receive a clear opportunity to rewrite history or repair every mistake. The doors function more like physical entrances into memory: they allow the characters to revisit the emotional meaning of events that have continued to control their present.

Cast and characters

Margot Robbie as Sarah

Sarah is guarded, doubtful, and reluctant to treat romantic attraction as evidence that a relationship can survive ordinary life. Her emotional history is closely connected to her mother’s death and the guilt Sarah carries around it. She has turned regret into a reason not to become too vulnerable.

Robbie’s performance has to move between deadpan reactions to the film’s strange fantasy and more exposed scenes involving grief. Sarah is not simply David’s cynical opposite. She is someone who has developed a protective theory of love: if closeness eventually produces loss, avoiding closeness can feel like a form of safety.

Colin Farrell as David

David is more hopeful than Sarah about the possibility of intimacy, but his optimism is fragile. He has been disappointed, fears rejection, and has allowed an earlier romantic humiliation to become part of his identity. His journey exposes the difference between appearing hopeful and making a genuinely vulnerable choice.

Farrell and Robbie give the film its central contrast, but the screenplay does not always provide enough everyday detail about their jobs, friendships, or lives outside the supernatural road trip. That omission is one reason some critics found the romance more schematic than fully lived-in.

Other important performers

  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays the female cashier encountered during the journey.
  • Kevin Kline plays the mechanic.
  • Jodie Turner-Smith provides the voice of the GPS.
  • Hamish Linklater plays David’s father.
  • Jennifer Grant plays David’s mother.
  • Lily Rabe plays Sarah’s mother.
  • Billy Magnussen and Sarah Gadon appear in supporting and past-life roles.

The parents, former partners, younger selves, cashier, mechanic, and GPS voice are not merely detours. They help turn the road trip into a series of emotional tests, each one exposing a different explanation Sarah or David has used to understand their life.

Who made the film?

Kogonada directed the movie, while Seth Reiss wrote the screenplay. That distinction matters. Kogonada is known for the contemplative films Columbus and After Yang, but he did not write this screenplay. Reiss previously co-wrote The Menu. The film therefore combines Kogonada’s controlled visual sensibility with Reiss’s original high-concept script.

The producers are Bradley Thomas, Ryan Friedkin, Seth Reiss, and Youree Henley. Executive producers include Kogonada, Ilene Feldman, Micah Green, Daniel Steinman, John Atwood, Gino Falsetto, Ori Eisen, and Paul Mezey. The production companies are Columbia Pictures, 30West, and Imperative Entertainment, with Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures handling distribution. Further production credits are listed by Sony Pictures Canada.

Benjamin Loeb handled cinematography, Jonathan Alberts and Susan E. Kim edited the film, and Joe Hisaishi composed the score. Hisaishi’s official site lists the soundtrack’s September 19, 2025 release through Milan Records.

Is it based on a book or a true story?

No. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is an original screenplay by Seth Reiss. The concept appeared on the 2020 Black List, where the title was written as A BIG, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY and the logline referred to David and Sarah traveling with help from a 1996 Passat GPS.

The Black List appearance explains why some early references use commas in the title, but Sony’s final branding omits them. The publicly available screenplay is an earlier draft, not a word-for-word transcript of the released movie. Details and dialogue in that draft may differ from the theatrical version.

The film is also not based on a true story. Its emotional subjects—grief, rejection, guilt, and fear of intimacy—are recognizable, but Sarah, David, the doors, and the GPS belong to the film’s fictional premise.

How do the doors and GPS work?

What the film shows: The old cars contain GPS systems that seem to know where Sarah and David need to go. The route leads them to free-standing doors. Passing through a door transports a character into a past setting or memory, often one that still carries unresolved emotional weight.

Also popular on Amazon

  • The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)

What the film does not explain: It never establishes who operates the rental agency, whether the GPS is supernatural or technological, why the doors appear in particular places, whether other people have experienced the journey, or whether Sarah and David are changing the past. It also does not offer a firm explanation for whether the future glimpsed in the journey is a literal alternate timeline.

The most defensible interpretation is that the GPS gives physical structure to introspection. Instead of asking Sarah and David to remember or discuss their past in ordinary conversation, it compels them to travel through it. The doors externalize memories and emotional avoidance; they make psychological movement look like a road trip.

That metaphor is clear even when the mechanics are not. Some viewers will see the lack of rules as intentional dream logic. Others will find it frustrating because the film establishes a supernatural premise without paying it off as a coherent system. Both responses are consistent with the movie: its emotional meaning is easier to follow than its literal mythology.

Full plot summary

The following section contains major spoilers.

Sarah and David meet

Sarah and David meet at a wedding and immediately register one another as possible romantic connections. Their attraction is complicated by their defenses. David wants to believe the meeting might lead somewhere, while Sarah is suspicious of the emotional promises people make when a moment feels unusually significant.

A later encounter at a roadside fast-food stop brings them together again. The two matching rental cars and identical-looking GPS systems make the coincidence impossible to dismiss. Rather than continuing separately, they begin traveling together, following instructions that lead them away from normal roads and toward the first door.

David’s lighthouse memory

One of the earliest significant destinations is a freestanding door leading to a lighthouse connected with David’s past. The location is important partly because David once invested a spectacular experience with the power to produce an emotional revelation. The memory exposes his tendency to believe that the right setting or grand gesture will solve an emotional problem.

The lighthouse sequence establishes the movie’s pattern: the journey offers beautiful or impossible circumstances, but the real subject is the belief David or Sarah has brought into that setting. A dramatic location cannot automatically make a person honest, brave, or ready to change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sarah, the art museum, and her mother

Another door takes the characters into a memory involving an art museum and Sarah’s late mother. Sarah’s connection to her mother is central to the film’s treatment of grief. The memories do not allow Sarah to undo the death. Instead, they bring her back to the relationship and to the feelings she has kept attached to the circumstances surrounding the loss.

Sarah’s guilt is not presented as proof that she caused what happened. It is presented as a burden she has allowed to shape every later decision. By holding on to regret, she can avoid the risk of becoming deeply attached again: if she never fully lets someone in, she never has to face another devastating loss.

David’s high-school musical

David revisits a high-school performance of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The sequence is the film’s most overtly theatrical and musical episode, and it reveals the origin of one of David’s emotional wounds.

The performance exposes an early romantic humiliation and the way David has allowed one rejection to become a lasting story about himself. He can perform confidence and hope, but performance is not the same as resilience. The musical is therefore more than a comic interruption: it shows David learning an emotional role and then carrying that role into adulthood.

Family memories and the fear that life is short

David also revisits his parents and the anxieties surrounding his family life. These memories deepen the film’s idea that life can end or change without providing the clarity people expect. David’s desire for connection is tied not only to romance but also to his fear that waiting for certainty means missing the limited time available to him.

Sarah’s memories of her mother work in parallel. Both characters are trying to decide whether the past is a warning that future attachment is dangerous or a reason to stop postponing meaningful choices.

The view of Earth

At a spectacular elevated location, Sarah and David look down at Earth. The sequence allows them to imagine the emotional possibility of a life in which they had chosen one another from the beginning. It is one of the film’s largest visual gestures and briefly makes their relationship feel cosmic or preordained.

But the scene also raises a question the film never completely resolves: are Sarah and David discovering a destiny that was always there, or are they using the fantasy to imagine what they might choose in the present? The later ending favors choice over a simple soulmate explanation.

Former partners and the deer accident

The journey eventually brings Sarah and David into contact with former romantic partners. These encounters prevent them from treating themselves as innocent observers of relationship failure. They must acknowledge their own ability to abandon, disappoint, or hurt other people.

After a car accident involving a deer, Sarah argues that their connection may be only a fantasy produced by the journey. David declares his love, but Sarah resists treating the supernatural experience as evidence that an ordinary relationship will work. Her skepticism is consistent with her character: she does not want an extraordinary night to become another promise that collapses when reality returns.

The final doors

Once the car is repaired, Sarah and David separate. Their last individual doorways lead them back toward formative childhood experiences. David encounters his younger self, while Sarah revisits a happier moment with her mother.

These scenes do not change the facts of their lives. They change the emotional distance from which the characters see those facts. David can recognize the difference between protecting himself with a hopeful self-image and making a vulnerable adult decision. Sarah can remember her mother without using guilt as permanent proof that attachment is unsafe.

Ending explained: do Sarah and David end up together?

Yes. After returning the car, David goes back to his ordinary life. Sarah changes her mind, seeks him out, admits that she loves him, and the two kiss before entering his home together.

The important point is that the GPS is no longer directing the decision. The supernatural journey has ended, and Sarah chooses David in an ordinary setting. That makes the conclusion less about the magic proving that they are soulmates and more about the characters finally making a voluntary choice after confronting the stories that kept them apart.

Can they change the past?

There is no clear indication that they can rewrite history. The characters revisit events, but the film does not show Sarah preventing her mother’s death, David erasing his rejection, or either person producing a new historical timeline. The doors permit emotional re-entry and reinterpretation rather than conventional time travel.

What do the final childhood encounters mean?

This is an interpretation rather than a stated rule of the film. David’s meeting with his younger self suggests that he must understand the hopeful, wounded person he has carried into adulthood without allowing that younger identity to make every decision for him. Sarah’s return to a happy memory with her mother separates love from the moment of death. She cannot remove grief, but she can stop treating grief as a reason to reject future happiness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The final choice is therefore not a reward for completing a magical quest. It is the first major choice Sarah and David make without the cars, GPS, and doors forcing them toward it.

Is the journey real?

The film leaves that question deliberately—or, in the view of some critics, unsatisfyingly—open. The doors and GPS are treated as real within the characters’ experience, but their origin and rules are never explained. The ending does not confirm whether the journey was supernatural, spiritual, technological, or a metaphor given physical form.

Does the film have credits scenes?

Post-release entertainment reporting describes a mid-credits sequence in which Sarah and David face each other and slow-dance in a dark, abstract space. Reports also describe a brief audio-only moment at the end of the credits involving footsteps and a door opening and closing.

These details should be treated as version-dependent rather than as a new sequel setup. Credits presentation can vary between theatrical, digital, and streaming versions, so viewers who want to check should let the credits run on the specific edition they are watching. The reported scenes are covered by ComingSoon’s credits-scene guide.

The film’s themes

Memory versus history

The film distinguishes between what happened and what an event continues to mean. Sarah and David cannot simply edit the past, but they can revisit the interpretation that has governed their present. Memory becomes something that can be re-entered and emotionally re-read even when the facts remain fixed.

Fear of intimacy

Neither character lacks romantic interest. David is held back by fear of rejection and failure; Sarah is held back by fear that intimacy produces harm and loss. Their obstacles are defensive habits, not a lack of chemistry alone.

Grief and guilt

Sarah’s mother is the emotional center of the grief story. The film does not offer a clinical theory of grief, and it should not be treated as psychological advice. Its simplified fantasy metaphor suggests that Sarah has confused guilt with responsibility and has used that confusion to avoid future vulnerability.

Destiny versus choice

The journey appears to engineer a meeting between Sarah and David, which invites a soulmate reading. The ending complicates that idea. The supernatural machinery may bring them together, but it cannot make the final relationship work. Their meaningful decision comes after the machinery stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Theatricality and performance

David’s high-school musical is a concentrated expression of the film’s interest in performance. People rehearse identities for others—confident person, hopeful person, invulnerable person—and eventually mistake those performances for their true selves. The musical sequence makes that idea literal without reducing it to a joke.

Is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey worth watching?

The answer depends heavily on what you want from a romance. The film is worth trying if you enjoy visually composed, earnest stories about grief and missed chances; slow-burn relationships; magical-realist premises; Joe Hisaishi’s orchestral score; and films that prioritize mood and metaphor over detailed world-building.

It is a poor match if you want a fast, joke-heavy romantic comedy, a rigorous explanation of how the doors work, richly developed everyday lives, or a relationship built through a large number of realistic interactions. The movie spends more time staging emotional memories than building a conventional romantic progression.

The strongest case for it is formal. Kogonada creates a tactile visual language from doors, cars, windows, landscapes, thresholds, primary-colored umbrellas, and carefully framed compositions. The best sequences—the high-school musical and the view of Earth in particular—give the film an unusual sense of lift. The strongest criticism is that the polished design sometimes makes Sarah and David feel like symbols in a fable rather than fully observed people.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparisons can help set expectations. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a useful conceptual comparison because both films filter romance through memory, although their mechanics and tones differ. Before Sunrise is a reader-facing comparison for a relationship driven by conversation and emotional disclosure rather than conventional plot momentum. It’s a Wonderful Life offers a thematic parallel in its use of supernatural intervention to make an ordinary person reconsider life. None of these comparisons indicates an official connection or shared franchise.

Reviews and audience response

The reception has been mixed to negative overall, with a clear split between admiration for the film’s ambition and frustration with its screenplay. The available aggregate pages report:

Source Reported response
Rotten Tomatoes 37% critics, based on 200 reviews; 57% verified audience, based on 500-plus ratings
Metacritic 43 out of 100 from 45 critic reviews; user score 5.7 from 58 ratings
IMDb Approximately 6.0 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes in the research snapshot

These scores are volatile and should be checked again before publication. Critics who responded favorably tended to praise Kogonada’s compositions, landscapes, portals, color design, Joe Hisaishi’s score, and the ambition of making an original adult romance with a supernatural structure. Robbie and Farrell are most effective, according to the positive side of the response, when the film allows them to express vulnerability without explaining every emotion in dialogue.

The recurring criticisms are equally specific: the dialogue sometimes states the theme instead of dramatizing it; the characters’ ordinary worlds are thin; the tone shifts between sincere romance, deadpan fantasy, musical theatre, grief drama, and metaphysical parable; and the supernatural premise has no satisfying rule system. The slow pace and episodic structure also leave some viewers unconvinced that Sarah and David develop enough cumulative chemistry.

Release history and production context

Reiss’s screenplay appeared on the 2020 Black List with 14 mentions. Kogonada was attached to direct, with Robbie and Farrell attached as leads during development. Filming took place in California in 2024.

Sony initially scheduled the film for May 9, 2025, before moving it to September 19, 2025. It was Robbie’s first acting feature release after Barbie, and its marketing also made use of Farrell’s visibility following The Penguin. Sony acquired worldwide distribution rights in a deal reported at approximately $50 million during the 2024 European Film Market. That reported acquisition price is not the same thing as the film’s production budget.

Music and visual style

Joe Hisaishi’s score is a major part of the film’s emotional atmosphere. His official discography lists the soundtrack release through Milan Records on September 19, 2025. The soundtrack also includes songs associated with Laufey and a version of Pete Townshend’s Let My Love Open the Door; a complete song list should be checked against the final album or music-rights information.

Visually, the movie repeatedly turns thresholds into emotional symbols. Primary-colored umbrellas and clothing stand out against natural landscapes. Doors appear in isolated or unexpected places. Cars, windows, and framed compositions divide the characters from one another and then bring them into shared spaces. Soft lighting and sudden transitions give memories a dreamlike texture.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

This design produces the film’s most persuasive argument: memory can feel like a physical place, and entering it can change how a person understands the present. Its visual precision also creates the central risk. When the characters are underwritten, the beautiful compositions can make them appear like elements in a carefully designed concept rather than people with sufficiently detailed lives.

Box office: how did it perform?

The Numbers lists an estimated $45 million production budget, a $3.25 million domestic opening weekend, $6,671,082 from the United States and Canada, $13,471,138 internationally, and $20,142,220 worldwide. Box Office Mojo and IMDb display a higher worldwide figure of approximately $22,393,413. In practical terms, public databases place the worldwide theatrical gross at roughly $20–22 million, depending on the source.

That performance represents a commercial disappointment relative to the reported production budget. It is not possible to calculate Sony’s actual loss from box office alone. Cinemas keep part of ticket revenue, marketing costs are separate from the production budget, and distribution, financing, and licensing arrangements are not fully public. Calling the theatrical run an underperformance is supported; presenting a precise studio loss is not.

Where to watch A Big Bold Beautiful Journey in the United States

Availability checked in the supplied research: August 8–10, 2026. Sony’s current film page says the movie is available digitally and lists Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home, YouTube, and Sony Pictures Core. These services may offer rental or purchase options rather than the same subscription package, and prices can vary by account and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A U.S. check of JustWatch performed on August 8, 2026 listed the film on Netflix and Netflix Standard with Ads, in addition to digital rental and purchase listings. Availability is territory-, date-, and account-dependent. The Netflix title page may show a regional unavailability message outside the United States, so readers should verify the listing in their own country.

The old promotional site still contains theatrical-only language, but that copy is outdated. For the latest U.S. digital information, use Sony’s current page rather than the original promotional synopsis. No single streaming listing should be assumed to apply globally.

Parents’ guide: is it suitable for children?

No—this is not a family movie. The film is rated R for language. Its bright colors, fantasy doors, and romantic marketing may make it look more accessible than it is.

In addition to the official rating reason, third-party parent-guide coverage identifies adult romantic histories, sexual conversations, an implied sexual encounter after Sarah meets another man at the wedding, references to abortion, past infidelity, suggestive clothing, flirtatious dialogue, grief surrounding a parent’s death, emotional distress, and family conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The film does not appear to be built around graphic violence, but parents should make their own decision based on the child’s sensitivity to adult relationships, bereavement, guilt, and emotionally difficult family material.

Frequently asked questions

Is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey based on a book?

No. It is an original screenplay by Seth Reiss. The concept was included on the 2020 Black List, and an earlier screenplay draft is publicly available, but the film is not an adaptation of a published novel.

Is it a time-travel movie?

Not in the conventional sense. Sarah and David pass through doors into memories and defining past experiences, but the film does not establish that they can rewrite history or create a conventional alternate timeline. Memory portals and magical-realist fantasy journey are more accurate descriptions than a straightforward time-travel adventure.

Does the movie have a happy ending?

Yes, in romantic terms. Sarah changes her mind, goes to David, tells him she loves him, and they kiss before entering his home together. The ending does not erase their grief or guarantee that their relationship will be easy, but it shows them choosing a future instead of allowing their past to decide everything.

What do the doors mean?

The film never supplies a canonical explanation. The most coherent reading is that the doors make memory and emotional avoidance physical. They force Sarah and David to revisit the events that shaped their fears, while the GPS turns that inward process into an outward journey.

Are Sarah and David soulmates?

The journey suggests a destined or unusually significant connection, but the ending is more interesting if it is read as a choice rather than proof of cosmic matchmaking. The supernatural events bring them together; they still have to decide whether to remain together once the journey ends.

Are there post-credits scenes?

Post-release reports describe a mid-credits scene in which Sarah and David slow-dance in an abstract dark space, followed by an audio-only moment involving footsteps and a door opening and closing at the end of the credits. Check the specific version you are watching because credits material can vary between releases.

What is the correct punctuation of the title?

Sony’s final title is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, without commas. The 2020 Black List listing and early screenplay use A Big, Bold, Beautiful Journey. The comma-separated form is useful as a search variant, but the released film’s official branding omits the commas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it connected to The Menu, Columbus, or After Yang?

No story or franchise connection has been established. Seth Reiss co-wrote The Menu, while Kogonada directed Columbus and After Yang. Those films are useful comparison points for their creators’ work, not evidence of a shared fictional universe.

Is the movie a comedy?

Sony includes comedy in its genre classification, but it is not a conventional romantic comedy. It is primarily a solemn, sentimental romantic fantasy with occasional comic, eccentric, and theatrical elements.

Where can it be streamed in the United States?

In the August 8, 2026 U.S. availability check, JustWatch listed Netflix and Netflix Standard with Ads. Sony also listed digital access through Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home, YouTube, and Sony Pictures Core. Confirm the current price and availability directly with the service before watching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey based on a true story?

No. It is a fictional original screenplay by Seth Reiss. Its themes of grief, regret, and fear of intimacy are realistic, but the characters, GPS systems, and doors are fictional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Sarah and David change the past?

The film does not show them rewriting history. The doors let them revisit emotionally important memories and reinterpret them, but the deaths, rejections, and other events remain part of their history.

What is the movie’s main message?

Its central idea is that confronting the past can make a person capable of choosing a different future. The film does not suggest that grief disappears; it suggests that grief and regret do not have to make future intimacy impossible.

Is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey appropriate for children?

No. It is rated R for language and includes adult romantic material, sexual references, abortion references, infidelity, grief, family conflict, and emotionally difficult discussions of a parent’s death.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is best approached as a visually designed emotional fable, not as a tightly explained time-travel movie or a conventional romantic comedy. Kogonada’s imagery, Robbie and Farrell’s guarded performances, and Joe Hisaishi’s score give it genuine atmosphere. Its thin character detail, solemn dialogue, slow pace, and unexplained supernatural rules may frustrate viewers who need realism, momentum, or clear fantasy mechanics. If you are comfortable with ambiguity and sentimental metaphor, it is an unusual romance worth trying; if not, the film’s trailer and star pairing may promise a different experience than the finished movie delivers.
