When YouTube captions are not working, first check whether the video has a caption track at all. If there is no CC indicator or captions option, the video may simply lack published captions—or automatic captions may still be processing. Use these five fixes to separate a video-specific limitation from a problem with YouTube, your browser, app, device, or connection.
When YouTube captions are not working, first determine whether the video has a caption track. If the video does not show a CC indicator or a captions option, changing device settings will not create captions that the uploader never published—or that YouTube has not yet generated.
Work through these five fixes in order. The most important test is whether captions fail on one video or on several videos that are known to have captions.
1. Confirm that the video actually has captions
Search results usually show a CC indicator for videos with captions. You can also filter YouTube search results by Subtitles/CC to find videos that have a caption track.

Open the video and look for CC in the player controls. Depending on whether you are using YouTube in a desktop browser, on a phone, smart TV, or game console, the control may be in a different place or may be labeled Subtitles or Subtitles/CC.
- CC is available: The video has at least one caption option, so continue to the next fix.
- CC is missing: The video may not have a published caption track. Automatic captions may also still be processing, unavailable for that video, or unable to be generated.
This distinction matters. A missing caption track is a source-video issue, not necessarily a fault with your browser, television, phone, or internet connection. Try another video with a visible CC indicator before changing system settings.
2. Turn captions on and choose the right language
Start playback, open the player controls, and select CC. If more than one option is available, open Settings > Subtitles/CC and choose the desired language. Some videos also offer automatic translation into another language.
The exact controls vary by platform, but look for one of these labels:

If captions are technically on but difficult to see, check the caption appearance settings. YouTube can let you change the font, text size, color, opacity, background, and edge style. These options affect how captions are displayed; they do not add captions to a video that has no caption track. If the text is invisible, reset the appearance settings to their defaults and test again.
3. Test a different video with known captions
Play a different video that clearly displays the CC indicator, preferably on the same device and connection.
| What happens | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Captions work on the second video | The original video probably has a missing, delayed, unsupported, or faulty caption track. | There is probably nothing wrong with your device. Try the transcript workaround below if the original video provides one. |
| Captions fail on several videos with CC | The problem may involve the YouTube app, browser, device, connection, or a temporary service problem. | Continue with the app, browser, device, and connection checks in Fix 4. |
| The CC button is absent on every video | You may be testing videos without captions, or the player may not be loading correctly. | Use YouTube search’s Subtitles/CC filter, then update and restart the software you are using. |
Automatic speech recognition is not available for every video. Therefore, one video without captions does not prove that YouTube captions—or your device—are broken.
4. Update, restart, and test the app, browser, device, or connection
If captions fail across several videos that should have them, follow this sequence. These are useful diagnostic steps, but clearing a cache or restarting cannot create a caption track that does not exist.

- Update YouTube or your browser. Install available updates for the YouTube app, web browser, and operating system.
- Close and reopen YouTube. In a browser, close the YouTube tab or window and open it again. In the app, fully close it rather than leaving it suspended in the background.
- Restart the device. This can clear a temporary player or rendering problem.
- Reduce browser load. Close unnecessary tabs and extensions, then test YouTube in an up-to-date supported browser.
- Try another supported device. For example, compare the browser version with the YouTube app, or test the same video on a television or phone.
- Try another internet connection. Test a different Wi-Fi network or a mobile connection if available. This helps identify a network-specific loading problem.
- Clear the YouTube app cache where the device supports it. Then reopen YouTube and play the video again. The menu varies by operating system and device manufacturer.
Use the results to narrow the cause. If captions work in a browser but not in the app, the app or its local data is the likely focus. If they work on another network, investigate the original connection. If they fail only on one television, console, or browser profile, the issue is probably local to that environment. If they fail only on one video everywhere, the caption track is the more likely problem.
5. Allow for automatic-caption limits and report persistent failures
Automatic captions may be delayed while YouTube processes a video. They may also be unavailable because of the video’s language, length, audio quality, extended silence near the beginning, overlapping speakers, or multiple languages. Poor recognition can result from accents, dialects, mispronunciations, background noise, or unclear speech.
That creates two different situations:
The captions do not exist or are still processing
The practical remedy is to wait, choose another available caption language, or ask the uploader to provide captions. Repeatedly reinstalling the app will not solve a missing or ineligible caption track.
The captions exist but do not render
If the CC control is present but the text is blank, invisible, frozen, or incorrectly displayed across multiple captioned videos, update and restart YouTube, test another browser or device, and reset caption appearance settings. If the failure persists, report it to YouTube.

How to report the problem
After reproducing the issue, open YouTube’s Help and Feedback flow from the account or app menu. Include enough detail for the problem to be investigated:
- The video’s title and direct link
- Your device and operating system
- The YouTube app or browser version
- The caption language you selected
- Whether the CC button is missing, disabled, or present but blank
- Whether the same failure occurs on other videos, devices, or connections
- The troubleshooting steps you already tried
A precise report is more useful than simply saying that subtitles are broken. YouTube’s feedback tools are also the appropriate escalation route when the issue continues after testing known-caption videos and more than one environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Workaround: open the video’s transcript
If the video has captions, YouTube may show Show transcript in the video description. Open it to read the caption text separately from the video overlay. Selecting a line in the transcript can jump to that point in the video.
This can help when the overlay is too small, difficult to read, or rendering incorrectly. It is not a universal workaround: Show transcript depends on the video having an available caption track, and not every video exposes the option in the same way.

Quick diagnosis
- No CC on one video: The video likely lacks captions, or automatic captions are delayed or unavailable.
- CC works on other videos: The original video’s caption track is the likely cause.
- CC is present but the text is invisible: Check caption appearance settings, then test another app, browser, or device.
- Captions fail everywhere: Update, restart, test another connection and device, then use YouTube’s Help and Feedback option.
- You need the words immediately: Look for Show transcript, provided that the video has captions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every YouTube video have closed captions?
No. YouTube videos do not all have captions. Check for the CC indicator or use YouTube’s Subtitles/CC search filter. If the CC control is absent, the video may not have a published caption track, or automatic captions may be unavailable or still processing.
How can I tell whether the problem is YouTube or one video?
Play another video that visibly has the CC indicator. If captions work there, the original video’s caption track is probably missing, delayed, unsupported, or faulty. If captions fail on several known-caption videos, troubleshoot the app, browser, device, and connection.
Can I read a YouTube transcript if captions are not displaying?
Possibly, but only if the video has captions. Look in the video description for Show transcript. You can read the text separately and select transcript lines to jump to those moments in the video.
Why are automatic captions missing or inaccurate?
Automatic captions can be delayed or unavailable because of language support, video length, poor audio, extended silence, overlapping speakers or languages, and speech-recognition limitations. Background noise, accents, dialects, and unclear speech can also cause errors.
The Bottom Line
Before troubleshooting your device, test whether the video has captions and whether captions work on another CC-enabled video. One-video failures usually point to the video’s caption track; failures across videos call for app, browser, device, connection, and finally YouTube feedback checks.
