“The Kiss” finds John Nolan caught between protecting Nyla Harper from a painful truth and telling her something that could matter to the case. That conflict gives the episode its strongest emotional material. The investigation supplies urgency, but its familiar procedural shape keeps the hour from feeling wholly fresh; Celina’s first case with Bailey adds a separate thread without displacing Harper and Nolan’s story.
What happens in “The Kiss”
In Season 7, Episode 9, the team searches for Connor after a shooting leaves Harper’s husband, James, and community-center volunteer Kylie injured. Both survive. Before the shooting, Nolan saw James and Kylie kiss, and he realizes that what he witnessed could be relevant: Harper had arrested Connor 18 months earlier. Meanwhile, Celina takes her first case with Bailey’s help. TV Insider’s recap describes the shooting and the disclosure, while Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing gives the broader synopsis.
Nolan’s disclosure is the emotional center
Nolan first tells Grey, Wesley, and Angela what he saw. Grey then informs Harper without identifying Nolan as his source. Nolan ultimately tells Harper himself: he reported what he witnessed, and he expresses both respect and affection for her. The episode’s emotional tension comes from that delay and from the fact that the truth is not merely personal gossip; it may inform the investigation.

The disclosure lands because Nolan and Harper have a relationship built on more than the immediate case. Harper was Nolan’s training officer when she arrived in Season 2, and the episode frames his choice as a painful collision between loyalty and honesty. Nathan Fillion described the dilemma to TV Insider this way: “It really was breaking Nolan’s heart to have to be the one just to hurt Nyla in any way, shape or form,” while adding, “And yet he’s honor-bound. He has to say something in that situation.” TV Insider also reports Fillion’s description of Harper as having become “in no small way, my hero.”
That character history makes the scene more affecting than a routine transfer of evidence. Nolan is not simply passing along a clue; he is telling someone he respects something that could change how she sees her husband. The choice gives the episode a clear emotional anchor, even if the surrounding investigation does not always feel as distinctive.

The suspect hunt: useful stakes, familiar machinery
The procedural strand gives Nolan’s observation a practical consequence: Connor is not an unrelated suspect, because Harper arrested him before. That connection gives the disclosure a reason to enter the case rather than remain a private conflict. At the same time, tying a character’s personal discovery directly to a suspect hunt is familiar The Rookie machinery. The tension therefore depends less on surprise in the case construction than on how the characters handle what the information means.
That balance echoes the two published reactions surfaced on Rotten Tomatoes, without establishing any wider consensus. Joshua M. Patton of CBR rated the episode 7/10 and called it “a solid and emotional episode” that “highlights a familiar Rookie problem.” Jasmine Blu of TV Fanatic rated it 3.7/5 and singled out the Harper-centered performance, writing that “Mekia Cox blew it out of the water.” Those are two individual critics’ ratings and observations, not an audience score or representative measure of opinion. Rotten Tomatoes lists both.

Celina and Bailey’s case adds a second track
Celina’s first case with Bailey broadens the episode beyond Harper and Nolan and gives the hour a parallel police-work strand. The available episode synopsis confirms the pairing, but does not detail its scenes; the useful review question is how well that case sits beside the central disclosure. As a secondary thread, it offers a change of focus, though the episode’s most consequential emotional question remains what Nolan owes Harper and when he owes it.
Verdict: effective character conflict, less distinctive procedure
“The Kiss” works best when it stays close to Harper and Nolan: their history makes his disclosure hurt, and the story gives that honesty a genuine cost. The case gives the revelation weight, but its familiar construction softens the suspense. Celina and Bailey provide a parallel strand rather than a competing centerpiece. The result is a mixed bag: a strong emotional dilemma, supported by a procedural framework that feels more recognizable than surprising.
