To tell which, look at what happens in the video and how the person delivers it. The word was in use long before TikTok or the game Among Us; that game helped bring it wider attention.
What does “sus” mean on TikTok?
In this slang use, “sus” is a shortening of “suspicious.” It can describe a person, action, claim, or situation that seems questionable. The exact implication depends on the moment: a creator might be expressing real doubt, joking about an odd detail, or using the word ironically.
So when someone says “that’s sus,” the basic meaning is “that seems suspicious” or “something about that seems off.” The phrase alone does not establish whether the speaker is making a serious accusation or teasing.
How to interpret “sus” in a TikTok
Start with the literal sense—suspicious or questionable—then consider the video and the way the word is presented. A 2025 study of English slang on TikTok describes examining dictionary meanings alongside contextual use and user interpretation; it also notes that tone, emoji, and captions can contribute to meaning. - What is happening? The action or claim in the clip may explain what the speaker finds questionable.
- How is it delivered? Voice, expression, and timing can make “sus” sound earnest, playful, or ironic.
- What do the caption and emoji add? They may reinforce a joke or signal how the creator wants the moment read.
These cues help interpret an individual post; they do not establish how frequently the word is used across TikTok.
Where did “sus” come from?
“Sus” did not originate on TikTok, and it was not coined by Among Us. Dictionary.com lists it as a shortening of “suspicious” and gives a first-recorded range of 1935–40. The multiplayer game Among Us helped popularize “sus” in the 2020-era gaming and meme wave. Its gameplay asks players to identify an impostor, making suspicion a natural part of conversation around the game. The game gave an older word a fresh boost; it did not invent it. The game’s overview also reports that “sus” was added to Merriam-Webster in September 2022.
