Short answer: A VPN can sometimes make Netflix show a different country’s catalog, but no VPN reliably works with every country, title, device, or server. Netflix blocks VPN and proxy IP addresses, and playback can fail even after the website loads. The strongest current candidates are NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, CyberGhost, and PrivadoVPN—provided the service still works for your target country when you try it.
This guide reflects current guidance and comparative coverage available in 2026. Streaming results, prices, server availability, and Netflix detection change frequently, so treat every ranking as conditional rather than a guarantee.
Quick comparison
| VPN | Best for | Evidence and strengths | Devices and TV options | Price/refund qualification | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Best overall | Strong recent comparative results, high speed, broad country coverage, and multiple servers to try when an IP is blocked | Apps for major desktop, mobile, TV and router platforms; verify the current device list | Current price and refund terms: official pricing page; long-term promotions are not permanent | Netflix performance varies by server and country |
| ExpressVPN | Easiest setup | Simple apps, broad device support, and a streaming reputation; MediaStreamer Smart DNS is available for selected devices | Broad app support; Smart DNS is not a full encrypted VPN and is not guaranteed to work with Netflix | Check the current offer and refund terms | Some recent tests reported failures in regions including Australia and Japan |
| Surfshark | Budget and household use | Unlimited simultaneous connections and strong results in some recent testing | Major desktop, mobile, TV and router support; confirm current limits and apps | See current pricing; promotional and renewal prices differ | Reliability is more variable by region and service |
| Proton VPN | Privacy-first users | Paid Plus servers support streaming, with strong privacy positioning and wide coverage | Desktop, mobile and selected TV/router options; country behavior varies | Netflix streaming generally requires a paid Plus plan; see plans | The free plan is not a dependable Netflix solution |
| CyberGhost | Streaming-labeled servers | Beginner-friendly interface and servers identified for streaming | Major desktop, mobile, TV and router platforms; verify the current streaming-server list | Check the purchase page for the current refund window | Recent independent results are less consistent than the leading picks |
| PrivadoVPN | Lower-cost alternative | Recent testing reported access to several major Netflix libraries at a lower price than some premium rivals | Smaller network and narrower documented device coverage | See the official site; verify current plan and refund terms | Less extensive, less consistently documented performance |
Comparative coverage from Top10VPN, TechRadar, and Tom’s Guide does not agree on one universal winner. That disagreement is expected: results depend on the country, server, device, plan, test date, and whether playback—not merely catalog browsing—worked.
What a VPN changes—and what it cannot change
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server and makes websites see the server’s public IP address instead of your normal address. Netflix may therefore associate the connection with the server’s country.

It does not change your Netflix subscription country, billing country, language settings, payment method, licensing rights, or account verification. Netflix libraries differ because distribution rights and licensing agreements differ by territory. A VPN does not create a universal catalog.
Netflix’s help center explains that VPN or proxy use can cause regional-title errors, proxy errors, and restrictions on some ad-supported experiences. Review Netflix’s current VPN guidance, Terms of Use, and applicable local law; technical possibility is not a universal legal or contractual permission.
Which VPN should you choose?
NordVPN: best overall candidate
NordVPN is the strongest general recommendation when broad country choice, speed, and the ability to try several servers matter. Its support flow advises changing servers, restarting Netflix, checking DNS, and creating a new profile when the catalog does not update. See NordVPN’s Netflix troubleshooting. Access remains country- and server-dependent.

ExpressVPN: best for beginners
ExpressVPN’s simple applications and broad device support make setup easy. Its MediaStreamer Smart DNS can help on selected devices that cannot run a VPN app, but it does not provide the same encryption or IP-location behavior as a VPN and is not a guaranteed Netflix workaround. Recent coverage also found failures with some Netflix regions.

Surfshark’s unlimited simultaneous connections make it attractive for a household. Recent reviews reported strong Netflix results in some tests, while also describing reliability as more variable. Inspect the renewal price—not just the introductory long-term offer—before subscribing.
Proton VPN: best privacy-led option
Proton says Netflix streaming generally requires a paid Plus server. Its support article notes that users may initially receive the United States catalog and that continued use of Plus servers in supported countries can associate the connection with that country’s catalog. Read Proton’s instructions and its Netflix page; no Proton server is guaranteed for every region.

CyberGhost: best for labeled streaming servers
CyberGhost’s interface identifies servers intended for streaming, which can reduce trial and error for beginners. Independent results have been less consistent than those for the leading choices, so confirm the current server recommendation and refund conditions before relying on it.
PrivadoVPN: lower-cost alternative
Recent comparative coverage reported access to several major Netflix libraries. PrivadoVPN has a smaller network and less extensive independent evidence, making it a reasonable price-sensitive alternative rather than a broad-coverage guarantee.

How to use a VPN with Netflix
- Subscribe to a paid VPN plan. Free plans commonly have fewer locations, queues, data limits, congestion, and heavily shared IPs.
- Install the provider’s official application from its website or your device’s app store.
- Sign in and approve the requested VPN configuration.
- Select the country whose catalog you want to test and connect to a server there.
- Close Netflix completely, then reopen it. On phones, force-close the app; on TVs and streaming sticks, exit and restart it.
- Search for a title known to be available in the target country rather than relying only on the home page or Top 10 list.
- Start playback and let it continue. A changed homepage is not proof that the stream will work.
- If Netflix detects the connection, try another server in the same country.
Device choices: app, router, or Smart DNS
- Native VPN app: The computer, phone, TV, or streaming device connects directly to the VPN. This is usually the simplest option where an app exists.
- Router VPN: A compatible router connects the household’s devices through the VPN. Setup is more complex, and every device shares that connection.
- Smart DNS: DNS requests or selected traffic are redirected without the full encryption of a VPN. It can be useful for some TVs, consoles, Apple TV, or Roku setups, but Netflix may still restrict it.
Windows and macOS, Android and iPhone/iPad, Android TV and Google TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox, smart TVs, Roku, and routers differ in app availability and DNS behavior. A service that works in a browser may fail in a television app.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
How to fix a Netflix proxy or VPN error
- Confirm the VPN connection. Use the provider’s status page or a reputable IP-location checker. An IP checker only shows what the site sees; it does not prove Netflix will accept the connection.
- Change servers in the same country. Netflix may block one exit IP without blocking the provider’s entire service.
- Restart Netflix fully. Force-close the app or restart the TV/streaming stick.
- Clear browser cookies and cache. A stored session can preserve an earlier location.
- Check location signals. Temporarily disable conflicting location permission only as needed; do not permanently weaken device security.
- Check DNS. Netflix’s M7037-1111 guidance says the connection should use the VPN provider’s DNS rather than an incompatible third-party DNS.
- Disable competing tools: another VPN, proxy extensions, iCloud Private Relay, Smart DNS, custom DNS profiles, or corporate/school filtering.
- Try another supported device. This separates an account or server problem from a TV-app or device-DNS problem.
- Ask the VPN provider which current servers support streaming. That advice can become outdated as Netflix blocks IP ranges.
- Disable the VPN and retry. This is required for unsupported plans or error states.
Netflix’s official pages cover regional availability errors, VPN viewing guidance, and the E121 ad-supported-plan restriction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a VPN may show the wrong catalog
- The exit IP is registered to a different country or a virtual server location.
- Netflix cached an earlier session while the app retained old location data.
- DNS traffic bypassed the VPN.
- The provider’s IP range is recognized as a proxy.
- Netflix used signals beyond the IP address.
- Travel rules, including European Union portability arrangements, kept the home-country catalog for a limited period.
Netflix may show only globally available titles, load successfully but fail at playback, or change catalogs between its website and app. Define success as sustained playback of the intended title.
Are free VPNs suitable for Netflix?
Usually not reliably. Free services often have limited countries, queues, data caps, congestion, shared IP addresses, weaker support, and business models that may involve advertising or data monetization. Those shared addresses are easier for Netflix to identify. A free VPN can occasionally work, but it should not be presented as a dependable Netflix solution, and a paid VPN can also stop working without notice.

What a VPN cannot solve
- It cannot create a local payment method, change your billing country, satisfy tax or verification requirements, or guarantee a cheaper subscription.
- It cannot make a title available when account, licensing, or regional-rights rules prevent it.
- It cannot bypass every hotel, school, corporate, or mobile-network restriction. Complete captive-portal login first, then consider TCP or obfuscated modes if your provider supports them.
- It does not guarantee compliance with Netflix’s terms or local law.
How to judge claims before buying
- Look for the tested Netflix country, date, device, app, number of servers tried, and whether playback continued.
- Separate a provider’s stated no-logs policy from an independent audit, its scope, date, and jurisdiction.
- Check monthly price, introductory term, renewal price, taxes, simultaneous-device rules, refund period, and whether app-store purchases are excluded.
- Do not equate a large advertised server count with usable Netflix locations.
- Check native TV apps, router support, Smart DNS, kill switch, DNS-leak protection, and IPv6 handling if those matter to your setup.
Deal coverage has shown promotional signals around $1.99–$2.49 per month for Surfshark, $2.99 for ExpressVPN, $3.49 for NordVPN, and $2.99 for Proton VPN, but these figures may require upfront long-term billing, exclude tax, include bonus months, and renew higher. Verify checkout details at the official pages linked above.
Which VPN fits which reader?
- Broadest chance of access: NordVPN, if its current servers work in your target country.
- Simplest setup: ExpressVPN.
- Many household devices: Surfshark.
- Privacy priority: Proton VPN’s paid Plus plan.
- Streaming labels and a longer evaluation window: CyberGhost, subject to current terms.
- Lower-cost alternative: PrivadoVPN, when its tested library matches your needs.
Final verdict
NordVPN is the best overall candidate, ExpressVPN is the easiest for beginners, Surfshark offers the strongest household-value angle, and Proton VPN is the clearest privacy-first choice. CyberGhost and PrivadoVPN are credible alternatives for specific priorities. In every case, the practical test is the same: connect to the desired country, restart Netflix, find a known title, and confirm uninterrupted playback. Netflix can block a working server tomorrow.
