Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →YouTube’s desktop player began adapting to vertical and other non-widescreen videos in a rollout reported on July 30, 2018. It was not a new 2026 feature: the change replaced a more rigid presentation with a player that adjusts to a video’s proportions and the available browser space. YouTube’s current computer playback guidance still describes aspect-ratio-aware sizing, while noting that some vertical videos may have padding around them.
What changed in YouTube’s desktop player?
Before the desktop update, a portrait or square clip could sit inside a conventional 16:9 player. The video occupied only part of that wide frame, leaving large black sidebars and making the image look smaller than necessary. The July 2018 change let the player adapt more closely to the video’s aspect ratio and the available screen or browser space, rather than treating every upload as widescreen. The rollout was reported on July 30, 2018; contemporaneous coverage described the same desktop behavior.
YouTube had previewed an adaptive player for vertical, square, and horizontal formats in 2017, before the desktop rollout. Its creator blog and 2017 YouTube blog archive provide that earlier context.
How aspect-ratio-aware playback looks
The player’s frame can become narrower or taller to suit the source video and the space available in the browser. The intended benefit is a more appropriately sized image without forcing portrait footage into a wide frame. This applies to more than vertical clips: square, 4:3, and other custom-ratio videos can also be displayed without being treated as 16:9.

| Video shape | What it means for desktop playback |
|---|---|
| 16:9 | YouTube’s standard computer-player shape. Its help page lists 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 among standard 16:9 resolutions. |
| 9:16 | A common portrait shape. The player can adapt to it, but YouTube says computer browsers may add padding around these videos. |
| 1:1 | A square image can be shown in a player closer to square than a fixed widescreen frame. |
| 4:3 or other custom ratios | The adaptive behavior is not limited to portrait footage; the player can accommodate other source proportions too. |
The aspect-ratio and resolution guidance is in YouTube’s computer-player help page.
Why “without black bars” needs a qualification
A portrait image cannot fill a wide monitor edge to edge while also keeping its original proportions. To do that, a player would have to crop the image, stretch or distort it, or use the remaining space around it. Adaptive sizing avoids needlessly placing the video inside a fixed wide frame; it does not make the geometric mismatch disappear.

YouTube’s current guidance says a 9:16 video viewed in a computer browser may receive additional padding. The documented padding is normally white in Light theme and dark gray in Dark theme. So “works better” means the player responds more appropriately to the source shape—not that every video fills the monitor or that surrounding space is always gone.
What creators should upload
Export the video in the aspect ratio intended for the footage rather than placing a portrait image on a landscape canvas with artificial bars. YouTube advises creators not to add padding or black bars directly to the upload because they can interfere with dynamic player sizing. Its upload guidance also addresses video dimensions.

There is an important difference between bars supplied by the player and bars included in the video file. Player-added padding is part of YouTube’s layout. Bars encoded into the upload are part of the picture, and the player generally cannot identify and remove them. Changing the player size therefore will not restore image area that was exported as black.
Why you may still see bars or padding
- The video file contains bars. They may have been added during editing or inherited from an earlier source.
- YouTube is adding padding. This can happen around 9:16 videos in computer browsers, with the appearance depending on the page theme.
- The viewing area is constrained. Browser dimensions, full-screen and theater modes, or an embedded player can change the available space and presentation.
- The player itself may be affected. A browser-specific difference, temporary interface experiment, extension, or playback problem can produce an unexpected layout.
If the layout seems wrong, compare the normal watch page with full-screen or theater mode, resize the browser, and check the same video on its official YouTube watch page rather than only in an embed. If bars remain inside the video image across those views, they may be part of the uploaded file.

What the 2018 change does not mean
- It does not convert portrait footage into landscape footage, rotate it, or promise edge-to-edge playback on a wide display.
- It does not remove bars already encoded into a video.
- It does not guarantee identical sizing in every browser, embedded player, viewing mode, or YouTube app.
- It is not the launch of Shorts. The 2018 change concerned the desktop player generally; portrait orientation alone does not mean an upload is a Short or that every YouTube viewing surface presents it the same way.
The documented rule concerns computer playback. YouTube maintains separate platform guidance, including for Android playback, so desktop behavior should not be treated as a guarantee for other devices.
