Friedrich Nietzsche was an influential German philosopher who championed the concepts of nihilism, atheism, and the will to power. He is best known for his works Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883-92), Beyond Good and Evil (1886) and The Birth of Tragedy (1872), which brought forth a new wave of philosophical thought.
Nietzsche’s philosophies centered around the belief that religion had suppressed the natural human instinct to gain power and control over others. He proposed that in order to overcome this suppression, mankind must become ‘supermen’ – free from all moral constraints and ready to shape their own destiny. Nietzsche believed that without God, people would eventually lose their sense of meaning in life; he therefore sought to make them aware of this lack of divine purpose and create their own values.
