It has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the centuries, transforming from a bustling shopping district to an epicenter of poverty and crime.
Nowadays, though, The Bowery has been given a second lease on life as it undergoes gentrification and revitalization. Its story is perhaps best told in a new documentary film called “The Bowery: A New York Story” which follows the changes that have occurred throughout its history.
The documentary focuses on two key aspects in The Bowery’s story; its early beginnings as an exclusive shopping district for wealthy New Yorkers in the 1800s, and its later years when it became home to some of the poorest citizens of Manhattan. Viewers will come away with an understanding of how this street has changed over time, from one extreme to another, thanks to interviews with former shop owners, locals who grew up here during both periods, and experts discussing gentrification.
In particular, viewers will be challenged by some of the more difficult questions about gentrification – is it good for local communities? Does it erase their culture or provide opportunities? Through these conversations and beautiful archival footage from different areas between Park Row and Grand Street on The Bowery, viewers are taken through its fascinating transformation.
