The February 2025 YouTube TV–Paramount carriage dispute ended without a lasting blackout. A short-term extension announced on February 13 kept Paramount programming available, and the companies announced a broader agreement on February 15. Subscribers therefore did not permanently lose CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon or the other Paramount channels named in the warning.
What the dispute was about
This was a carriage dispute: a negotiation over the contract that lets a live-TV distributor carry a programmer’s channels. YouTube TV said it wanted a fair agreement without passing additional costs to subscribers. Paramount said it had made fair offers and accused YouTube TV of seeking one-sided, non-market terms. The public statements establish a disagreement over contract terms, but neither company disclosed the complete financial details, so claims about the exact fee demands remain the companies’ own positions. The February 2025 timeline
- May 7, 2020: ViacomCBS and Google announced an expanded distribution agreement adding networks including BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 to YouTube TV. Paramount’s announcement describes that earlier expansion.
- February 12, 2025: YouTube TV warned that Paramount programming could become unavailable after February 13 if the contract was not renewed.
- February 13: The companies agreed to a short-term extension. YouTube TV said the channels and existing library recordings remained available while negotiations continued.
- February 15: YouTube TV announced a deal to continue carrying the affected Paramount channels.
- February 16: Contemporary coverage reported that the agreement had resolved the immediate dispute and preserved channels including CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV. CBS News reported on the final agreement.
Which channels and services were at risk?
The warning covered Paramount programming broadly, not just MTV and Nickelodeon. The networks and services identified in coverage included:
- Broadcast: CBS, including local CBS stations carried in a subscriber’s market.
- Sports: CBS Sports Network.
- Entertainment and children’s networks: MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, BET, VH1, TV Land, Paramount Network, Smithsonian Channel and Pop TV.
- Related add-ons: Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and BET+ purchased through YouTube’s channel marketplace.
This is a list of services identified in dispute coverage, not a promise that every item was included in every subscriber’s package. Local CBS availability depends on the subscriber’s home area and ZIP code; YouTube TV explains those market limits in its network availability guidance.

Did YouTube TV viewers actually lose the channels?
No lasting outage resulted from this dispute. The threatened blackout was real, but the February 13 extension prevented an immediate removal, and the February 15 agreement maintained carriage. It is more accurate to describe the event as a threatened blackout followed by an extension and final deal than to say that YouTube TV removed CBS, MTV or Nickelodeon.
The available evidence confirms the February 2025 resolution. It does not establish a separate Paramount–YouTube TV dispute in August 2026, so the episode should not be presented as a current unresolved warning.

What subscribers could have lost if talks failed
- Live channels: Paramount’s feeds, including CBS and CBS Sports Network, could have disappeared from the YouTube TV guide.
- Local CBS: Households could have lost their YouTube TV feed of the CBS affiliate available in their market. A CBS network threat is especially significant for local news, sports and broadcast events.
- Existing recordings: YouTube TV warned that previous library recordings from affected channels might no longer be accessible if the programming disappeared.
- Purchased add-ons: Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and BET+ bought through YouTube’s marketplace were also identified as at risk.
YouTube TV said it would offer an $8 credit if Paramount programming became unavailable for an extended period. Because the extension and final agreement avoided that scenario, do not treat the credit as a universal refund that every subscriber received.
Why CBS mattered more than a typical cable-channel loss
MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central are important to particular households, but CBS is a broadcast network with local affiliates in many U.S. markets. Its schedule can include national news, entertainment, sports and live events that viewers may regard as essential to a live-TV subscription. The practical impact therefore varied: a sports viewer, a local-news viewer and a family using Nickelodeon faced different risks.

Why streaming services still have carriage disputes
YouTube TV is a virtual multichannel distributor, not an owner of every channel in its bundle. It must negotiate distribution rights, affiliate fees, local-station agreements, sports rights and bundled networks, much as cable and satellite providers do. Streaming delivery changes the technology, but not the bargaining relationship. YouTube TV has also faced high-profile disputes involving NBCUniversal, Fox and Disney; those episodes show the structural risk of channel bundles, not that every negotiation ends the same way. Is Paramount+ a replacement for YouTube TV?
No. Paramount+ can supplement a household’s viewing, but it is not a one-for-one replacement for YouTube TV. Paramount+ is primarily an on-demand service with selected live programming. YouTube TV combines a broad live-channel guide, local-channel availability that varies by market, cloud DVR features and many non-Paramount networks. A Paramount+ subscription also does not automatically preserve recordings made in a YouTube TV library or replicate the exact CBS station feed available through YouTube TV.

Paramount+ is a sensible temporary option when the priority is Paramount-owned series, films, children’s programming or selected live content. It is a poor substitute for households that need a full live bundle, extensive sports coverage, local news or non-Paramount channels. See the official service page at Paramount+.
What to do if a similar warning appears again
- Read the provider’s status notice. Confirm the named programmer, deadline and whether the warning applies to your plan.
- Check your market. Use your home ZIP code and channel lineup to determine whether the threatened local CBS station is part of your service.
- Test recordings. Play important library recordings before assuming they will remain available during an extension or blackout.
- Inspect add-ons and billing. Determine whether Paramount+ with SHOWTIME or BET+ is billed through YouTube TV or through a separate account.
- Read credit terms. A promised credit may depend on the length of an outage and may not be automatic.
- Compare temporary alternatives. Paramount+ may cover on-demand needs; an antenna may cover local broadcast stations; another live-TV service may be necessary for a broader replacement.
- Check cancellation consequences. Before switching, review the billing cycle, promotional-price expiration, taxes, regional-sports fees and DVR limits.

The practical takeaway
The February 2025 episode was a warning about the fragility of live-TV bundles, not a permanent loss of Paramount channels from YouTube TV. CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon and the other named networks stayed available because an extension was followed by a completed agreement. If another dispute arises, identify the exact channels and local-market impact, protect important recordings, check any conditional credit, and compare alternatives based on the programming your household actually uses.
