The widely cited YouTube TV buffering report was not evidence of a CBS March Madness outage. The closest matching report, published on May 19, 2023, described buffering and freezing during NBA playoff coverage, reportedly around commercial breaks. It also mentioned March Madness—but in connection with demand for YouTube TV’s multiview feature. A YouTube engineer said Google was working on a fix for the reported ad-related problem; the report gave no rollout date, and the available evidence does not establish when or whether that particular fix shipped.
What the 2023 report actually described
Cord Cutters News reported on May 19, 2023, that some YouTube TV viewers had experienced buffering or stalled playback for a second consecutive night during the NBA playoffs. The report characterized the problem as occurring during or around commercial breaks and linked it to ad insertion—the process of placing or replacing ads in a stream.
That description is a report about the incident, not a detailed public technical postmortem from Google. It does not establish that every subscriber was affected, that the entire service went down, or that a particular network’s feed caused the problem. The report also mentioned a separate YouTube TV outage near the end of an NBA Eastern Conference finals game. These are live-TV playback problems, but they should not be collapsed into one confirmed cause.

Why March Madness and CBS entered the story
March Madness appears in the same report because YouTube TV was expanding multiview amid demand during the tournament. Multiview lets viewers watch more than one live stream at a time. That context does not show that the reported buffering happened during a March Madness game or that CBS was the affected channel.

YouTube TV’s March Madness page lists CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV among the networks relevant to tournament coverage. Which local CBS station a subscriber receives depends on location and lineup availability. A channel’s presence in the service does not, on its own, identify it as the source of a playback fault.
So if you encountered a CBS stream problem during a tournament, it may have resembled the symptoms in the 2023 report, but the cited report does not verify that it was the same incident. It does not identify a CBS affiliate, a particular March Madness game, or a CBS-specific Google fix.
What Google said—and what remains unknown
The 2023 report quoted a YouTube engineer acknowledging an ads-related buffering and freezing issue and saying Google was working on a fix. No release date was given in the report. It does not document a completed rollout or confirm that the proposed fix resolved playback for CBS, March Madness, or every affected viewer.

That is a historical statement, not evidence that a fix is still pending today. The sources available here do not establish when the fix shipped, whether the issue recurred, or whether any later CBS playback complaint had the same cause. It would be inaccurate to present Google as currently working on a CBS March Madness fix on the strength of that 2023 report alone.
The report also discussed multiview improvements and plans to test transcoding changes, including a possible bitrate increase for some live 1080p streams. Those were separate product experiments, not confirmed remedies for the ad-related buffering. The report described targeting devices that support VP9 and users with high-speed internet, and said the bitrate change could become permanent if testing went well. It did not establish that these experiments fixed the reported playback problem.
How to narrow down a similar problem
When a live stream stalls, note whether it affects one part of playback, one channel, one device, or everything you watch. That pattern can help you choose the next check, though it cannot prove a technical root cause by itself.

- Playback fails mainly around ad breaks: That pattern is consistent with an ad-insertion or ad-replacement problem, but it is not proof. Try another program and channel, and record when the interruption occurs.
- Only CBS is affected: Check whether another live channel works, then try CBS on a second supported device. A local affiliate feed, the platform’s delivery path, the app or device, and the home connection are all possibilities; the symptom alone cannot distinguish among them.
- Every channel stalls: Test another app or service on the same device, then try YouTube TV on another device. If several services fail on the same network, the connection or router may be involved. If only one device fails, its app, software or hardware path may be the issue.
- The game is unavailable rather than buffering: Check local-channel availability and location settings. Traveling viewers may receive different local channels, and the correct CBS affiliate can depend on where they are watching.
- The app works but a network website rejects your sign-in: Check provider-login eligibility. YouTube TV says network-site authentication requires the family manager’s sign-in information.
For a basic recovery attempt, close and reopen YouTube TV; try the stream on another supported device; restart the device and router; and check for app and device software updates. These are general troubleshooting steps, not verified fixes for the historical incident. If contacting support, include the device, approximate location, CBS affiliate, program, time of the failure, and whether other channels or devices worked.

Options if a tournament stream will not play
Men’s March Madness coverage is split between CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery networks—TBS, TNT and truTV—so a service carrying only one group of channels is not a full substitute. A 2026 viewing guide describes that network split. Confirm the schedule, your local channel lineup and the current terms before signing up; coverage and authentication requirements can vary.
- March Madness Live: The tournament-focused service offers game viewing and related features, but full live access generally requires a participating TV-provider login. YouTube TV’s support page lists CBS and NCAA March Madness Live among supported destinations for provider sign-in. The family manager’s credentials are required.
- Paramount+: May be an option for games airing on CBS, subject to the plan and local CBS availability. It does not replace TBS, TNT or truTV coverage.
- Max: May cover games airing on TBS, TNT and truTV, but it does not replace CBS coverage.
- Another live-TV service: Hulu + Live TV or Fubo may offer a broader lineup, but verify that the required channels are available in your market before subscribing. Switching services also means relying on another app and device setup.
- A digital antenna: Where reception is adequate, an antenna can receive local over-the-air CBS without a streaming subscription. Reception depends on location, terrain, the building and antenna placement; an antenna will not provide the cable-network games.
These are alternatives for a current viewing problem, not evidence that a subscriber should replace YouTube TV because of a 2023 incident. A short-term option for one network may be more practical than taking on a full live-TV subscription, but only if it carries the game you want in your location.
