For viewers in the United States, no—not as a currently verified, free, full-length official upload on ordinary YouTube. The official Max result that appears for Episode 1 is an “Inside the Episode” companion feature, not the approximately 77-minute drama. To watch the complete episode legally, use Max or YouTube TV with the required Max add-on.
What is actually on YouTube?
The official video most likely to cause confusion is Max’s “Inside the Episode – 1”. It discusses the opening story, includes interviews with the creators and stars, and is supplementary material rather than the scripted episode.
YouTube also carries official trailers, interviews, clips, recaps, podcasts and fan commentary. Finding one of those videos does not mean the complete episode is available.

As of the latest U.S. availability check on August 18, 2026, no currently verified, official, full-length upload of Season 1, Episode 1 was found on ordinary YouTube. That wording matters: individual user uploads can appear, disappear, be blocked by country or be mislabeled, so this is not a claim that every unauthorized copy has been identified.

Episode 1, titled “When You’re Lost in the Darkness,” is listed at about 77 minutes on NOW, although platforms can display runtimes differently by region. The official listing is available at NOW.
Why old articles say it was free
Episode 1 did receive temporary promotional distribution in early 2023. HBO made a free promotional episode available through its U.S. website, while contemporary coverage reported that Sky offered it through its YouTube channel in the United Kingdom.

Those reports describe a dated, market-specific promotion—not a permanent YouTube release. See the contemporaneous accounts from GameSpot and The Shortcut. A U.K. promotion does not establish access for U.S. viewers in 2026.
YouTube versus YouTube TV
YouTube is the ordinary, free video platform. YouTube TV is a paid live-television service. YouTube TV’s official Last of Us page says a Max add-on is required.

Therefore, “available on YouTube TV” means the episode can be viewed through a paid YouTube TV account with Max—not that it is free at YouTube.com. A YouTube TV membership alone does not turn the ordinary YouTube app into a free source of HBO episodes.
Where U.S. viewers can watch Episode 1 legally
Max
Max is the most direct option. Its support page tells subscribers to sign in and stream The Last of Us: Max help. Max’s U.S. product and pricing information is at max.com and its plan page.

These are observed promotional and list prices, not a promise of current billing. Check YouTube TV’s plan page before subscribing. If you only want one HBO series, YouTube TV plus Max generally costs much more than Max alone.

U.S. availability tracking also lists purchase options such as Amazon Video, Apple TV Store and Fandango At Home. Exact episode or season prices must be checked at each retailer because they vary. JustWatch’s season listing provides a current service snapshot.

- Check the channel. Look for HBO, Max, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sky or another clearly licensed distributor—not a newly created channel using official-looking artwork.
- Check the runtime. A short video is likely a trailer, recap, excerpt or reaction rather than the roughly 77-minute episode.
- Read the description. “Full episode” in a title is not proof of licensing or completeness.
- Test your region. A result can be visible in search but blocked when playback begins.
- Avoid external download links. Suspicious uploads may redirect to phishing pages, fake verification screens or malware.
- Expect removals. Unlicensed copies can be incomplete, altered or taken down without notice.
Current U.S. answer
For U.S. viewers, the complete first episode is not currently verified as a free official upload on ordinary YouTube. The Max YouTube video is a behind-the-scenes “Inside the Episode” feature. Use Max for the simplest direct subscription, or YouTube TV only if you want its broader live-TV package and add the required Max service. Current licensing and promotional availability can change, so confirm the listing for your account and territory before paying.
