YouTube TV has not generally been removed from Roku. Some Roku owners reported on April 8, 2025 that the app disappeared from both their home screens and the Roku channel store. For many of those users, checking for a Roku software update restored the listing, although the underlying cause was never publicly confirmed.
Google’s current support documentation still lists Roku TVs and numerous Roku streaming players as supported devices. If YouTube TV has vanished from your Roku, update the device, restart it, and search through the Roku Channel Store rather than relying only on the home-screen search.
The fastest fix
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Software update. Some older devices may label this System update.
- Select Check Now.
- Install any available update and allow the Roku to restart.
- Return to the Roku home screen and open Streaming Channels.
- Select Search channels and search for YouTube TV.
Roku normally checks for updates automatically when powered on and approximately every 24–36 hours, but a manual check is worthwhile when an app disappears. See Roku’s software-update instructions.

What happened to YouTube TV on Roku?
The original incident was reported in April 2025. Some users said the YouTube TV tile had vanished and that they could not restore the app through the usual channel-store process. Contemporary coverage reported that a Roku community moderator advised users to check for a Roku OS update, after which the app returned for many affected users.

That evidence does not prove that outdated software was the universal cause. The problem may have involved Roku’s channel catalog, device software, or another Roku-side synchronization issue. The important point is that the incident was not confirmed as a permanent removal of YouTube TV from Roku.
Google’s current documentation continues to provide a Roku installation path: Home page → Streaming Channels → Search channels → YouTube TV. It also distinguishes the YouTube TV app from the regular YouTube app. Follow the official YouTube TV Roku installation instructions.
If the app is still missing
Restart the Roku
After installing a system update, restart the device even if Roku does not require it. You can usually do this through Settings → System → Power → System restart, though menu labels vary by model and Roku OS version. On devices without a conventional power button, restarting through the system menu is preferable to repeatedly pressing buttons on the remote.
Google’s general troubleshooting guidance also recommends turning the viewing device off or restarting it, waiting about 30 seconds, and trying again. Its instructions are available at YouTube TV troubleshooting.

Restart the router
If YouTube TV appears in the store but will not download, unplug the router for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, wait for the internet connection to return, and retry the installation. A store synchronization or network problem can prevent an app from appearing or installing correctly.
Use the Channel Store search
Search from Streaming Channels → Search channels, not only from Roku’s general home-screen search. Enter “YouTube TV” with the space and verify the official app branding before selecting it.
Check whether your Roku is supported
Google currently lists all Roku TV models as supported, along with numerous Roku players, including Roku Ultra, Ultra LT, Streaming Stick models, Roku Express models, Premiere models, Roku 4, several Roku 3 models, and Roku 2 model 4210X. The exact list can change, so compare your model with Google’s supported-device documentation.

Do not buy a replacement Roku solely because the app tile disappeared. Updating the existing device is the appropriate first step. Replacement becomes more reasonable if the Roku is no longer supported, repeatedly fails software updates, loses multiple apps, or performs poorly across several streaming services.
If YouTube TV appears but will not open
Treat this as an app or device problem rather than a channel-catalog problem:
- Install any pending Roku system update.
- Restart the Roku.
- Remove the YouTube TV app.
- Restart the Roku again if prompted.
- Reinstall YouTube TV from the Channel Store.
- Sign in again.
Reinstallation can require you to authenticate again. It will not solve a regional restriction, an unsupported device, or a temporary absence from Roku’s catalog. Avoid assuming that every Roku has a universal Settings → Apps → Clear cache menu; Roku’s available menus vary, and the official guidance supports updating, restarting, and reinstalling instead.
If the app opens but playback is poor
Playback problems are separate from an app disappearing from the store. Google says YouTube TV needs at least 3 Mbps for optimal viewing and lists 13 Mbps or more for reliably streaming HD when other devices share the connection.

For an HDCP error, Google recommends enabling the television’s HDMI Ultra HD Color setting, where available. For choppy playback on Roku, try the device’s Display type options, including 4K 30 Hz TV, 4K 60 Hz TV, or 4K HDR 60 Hz as appropriate for the television.
These display settings address playback and compatibility errors; they will not make a missing Channel Store listing reappear.

YouTube TV is available only in the United States. If the Roku was purchased or activated in another country, you are traveling abroad, or the account’s location information has changed, availability may differ.
For a location-verification issue, open YouTube TV on a supported device, go to the account or profile area, select Location, choose Current Playback Area, and complete the requested verification from a mobile device. A region issue is only one possible explanation; it is not the confirmed cause of the 2025 disappearance.

A separate 2026 Roku issue
Some 2026 reports concerned YouTube TV features rather than the app vanishing. Android Authority reported that a YouTube TV update restricted background playback from the Live Guide on some older or less powerful Roku devices. A Google Community expert reportedly described some restrictions as intentional for certain hardware, although the reports also included complaints from some newer devices.
This is a different troubleshooting branch:
- Missing app: update Roku, restart it, and search the Channel Store.
- App opens but a feature is missing: check the Roku model, memory limitations, and current YouTube TV behavior.
- Video is choppy: check the network, Roku display settings, and device software.
The 2026 feature reports do not establish that YouTube TV was removed from Roku or explain the 2025 Channel Store incident. See the reported Roku feature restrictions for that separate issue.
When to contact support
Stop repeating the same reinstall cycle if the official listing remains absent after an update and restart. Before contacting Roku or YouTube TV, record:
- The exact Roku model and Roku OS version or build.
- The Roku account and region associated with the device.
- When the app disappeared.
- Whether other apps work normally.
- Whether YouTube TV appears on another supported device using the same account.
If YouTube TV works elsewhere, the subscription is probably not the immediate problem. If every Roku in the household loses the listing while other apps remain available, a broader Roku catalog or service issue is more plausible.
Temporary ways to watch YouTube TV
If the Roku remains unavailable, use a computer browser or temporarily cast from a phone or computer if the television supports Chromecast or AirPlay. Google also lists support for Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV and Google TV, Chromecast, select smart TVs, and supported game consoles.
Use an existing compatible device before buying anything. Consider replacement hardware only when the Roku is unsupported, repeatedly fails updates, or has broader performance problems. A new Roku may not help during a temporary channel-store outage; switching to Fire TV, Apple TV, or Google TV can bypass a Roku-specific issue but adds another platform and remote.
